Skype Officially in the Market for the HTC EVO 4G

Odd... its description says: "Only for Sprint 4G Evo device" then a little further down it says: "Talk and text chat with with anybody at any time on any device and any network".

there's an iMovicha for other devices and iMovicha4EVO that utilizes the front facing camera. I think the dev just copied the description and added the EVO part on. One of the main selling points for me with this phone was the front facing camera and video chat, so I was kinda ticked when Skype split from fring. I have my first child on the way and wanted to video chat while I was away from home or a pc...

Not entirely sure why but I made some test calls to my counterpart in London and she heard me fine but all I got was echoing/stuttering, unusable.

I haven't had time to see why but this is becoming a problem. It's still in beta so i'll give it some additional time to mature a bit.

I switched back to the laptop and it worked perfectly. She did mention my voice sounded clear, like a normal Skype to Skype call.

I agree with a few others, I could care less about video chat as much as being able to make a call over the 3G network, does anyone know if this is limited to just Android phones?

I just installed it today, I'm logged on, it allowed me to send chat messages but when trying to call it gave me the common message quoted above about dialing out of the US being limited to WiFi. I'm 99% positive my coworker who has an Iphone doesn't have that limitation, what gives?

I read last night that it still doesn't support Android for the most part and some model phones won't have support until 2.2.

The unlocked version that neoshi mentioned works via 3G. I've used over 3G to call my wife while she's using her laptop.

I don't understand something. For those of you claiming that calls over 3g don't matter but that it is important you get to "talk" to your mates over seas, and now you have to rely on there being WiFi available: Why not just use an instant messaging client ? This way you're not using minutes and wifi isn't necessary.

I know that hearing their voices is nice and all, but its also mostly redundant IMO. That said, what exactly would the point of Skype be in that case? Most people have MSN, yahoo or AIM installed on their pc's or even Gtalk or Facebook chat via adium or trillian etc..

I guess that puts me in the camp who find Skype pointless without video or Skype to Skype over 3g.

Doug, with your reasoning, we should just get rid of the microphone portion of our phones!!! And usually, you need a wifi on the overseas end simply because CDMA connectivity does not exist everywhere...and it is dwindling by the day. Even if you had it, you would need an international roaming data plan or pay for the data roaming charges.

Basically, the configuration we use is that my wife is is signed on to Skype over 3g and I can get in touch with her anytime I want/need....regardless of how I am connected. Video chat adds nothing other than novelty/luxury. Yes, it is a bonus but certainly not needed....although she is pretty!..:)

Ah yeah, my bad. I totally forgot about the pitfalls of using the CDMA technology! I just moved back from Europe to NY, and before that was using an iPhone (JB) on ATT, so it was quite easy to simply switch out the SIM card and carry on as usual. Thankfully we held on to our unlocked GSM based phones for over seas travel.

Edit: Is that your wife in your avatar? Can't see how "pretty" she is, but the rest of her looks damned good ! ;)

All I care about is the video feature, but it seems like skype is omitting this from all their smartphone clients. It was the number one reason I was excited about the iPhone 4 when I got it. I wonder if it's a licensing thing or what. The only ting I ever used skype for was video chat :(

I believe the next version of Android may address the video chat with a built in app. If they had some advanced knowledge that confirmed this I wouldn't expect them to go through the effort of supporting video chat in their mobile app. IF a standard video chat feature is available in the next Android version then you should see all apps of this type support it before long.

So is it going to have built in skype? Or have a mobile client that can be installed on a PC? Really the functionality I think people are wanting is just to use the dang front-facing camera for skype calls! LOL
