Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

that was a lot of reading to fully catchup, lol. I know the app store issue is more on google, but as others have said, Rogers could be giving that extra push if they cared.

I also worded it like that for effect, saying how not only did some apps not work properly or at all on 1.5, but heck we can't even buy all the apps avail for android.

Now I noticed a lot of people sending emails to HTC, now I assume this is because they are making the ROMs for the HTC devices, but what about the LG Eve? It hasn't seemed to recieve much attention on here.

Atleast I get updates for my iphone, lol.

@coop3422: You're one of the few vocal LG users we've had, I imagine since it is so new. Most of us are on Magics and Dreams.

You should email LG and ask them if Rogers has contacted them yet for the 1.6 LG ROM. That might be a whole other kettle of fish! Hell, Rogers didn't seem to be away that there was a 1.6 update available from HTC until we started complaining, they may still be clueless as far as the LG goes. I was thinking about getting one for my wife, but I'll hold off.

Maybe we should all get Palm Pres from Bell. ;-)

Actually this is a very good point. This story is not only about HTC, Rogers and customers, but about Google.
Maybe Google could create a little pressure from his side?

ROGERS is giving HTC a bad rep which is giving ANDROID a bad rep which is giving GOOGLE a bad rep.

I bet if HTC and Google were really aware of what's happening here in Canada with Android devices, they would be putting some pressure on Rogers to get with the program.

Don't be naive :) I know that HTC aware about current situation but they want Roger to pay for "branded" version of 1.6. Even more: they are counting on us (customer) for creating enough pressure on Rogers that will make eventually Rogers to pay.

Coop, you are brave to get the Eve already. I chickened out. I kept asking questions at the local rogers outlets but the answers, while sufficient, didn't fill me with confidence. I often knew more about Android than the guy behind the counter.

PLUS, I couldn't find any info about the Eve being big in the States. Sucks to depend on that market but I might want some accessories that are slightly similar to all the icrap sold at Best Buy and Chinatown summer markets. I had this issue with the Samsung P2 a number of years ago: lots of accessories for ipod/phones but not much for my media player - and it seems odd to me to buy things solely based on the availability of accessories.

Took a kick at the can and sent HTC this email.

Dear HTC Support,

I'm writing in regards to how one of your distributors (Rogers Wireless) is treating it's customers in Canada. Even though your company has provided an Android 1.6 update for the HTC Dream and HTC Magic, Rogers has not come forth to announce any availability of an upgrade for it's customers. Even worse, some people have even been told that it's OK to use the updates from your site to flash onto our hardware.

Even after multiple contacts with Rogers Wireless they refuse to comment on when/if they are going to provide the upgrade. Unfortunately more often than not the HTC name is being drawn into the discussions on lack of support that we are receiving for our devices. You can follow the online discussions of our troubles with your distributer at the following URL's

Rogers Community Forums / When will Rogers update Android phones to ver 1.6

Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Don Rayner
(Very upset HTC Dream owner)

Got a quick reply from HTC, just another form letter, sigh................

Dear Don,

Thank you for contacting HTC Support.

I am sorry to hear that an update is available but your carrier won't push it. Unfortunately, it is at the discretion of the carrier to push updates when they are available. I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

However, I will pass your email along the the correct departments so that they may review it and possibly take action.

Once again, thank you for contacting HTC Support. In order to help improve our service, we would like to invite you to take a survey at HTC Online Survey

Regards,

HTC Support

Let's fill up the survey and say "I will not ever in my life get an HTC phone. No support from HTC or Rogers" :)

No kidding! Assuming HTC already has working version of Android 1.6 for PVT32A it suppose to take less than hour to make "branded" version with stupid icons and shortcuts to Rogers site.
All these discussions and mails from CS of both companies consume more resources and time than actual work!

I took the survey and I'll say that they didn't get a good overall mark. I wonder if I can get them to replace my Rogers branded phone with an unlocked google branded phone?

Technically you can. I am sure unlock T-mobile phone will work with Rogers simcard. The problem is, if something doesn't work, Rogers will not support it as it was said by RogersMary.

@queerasmoi If you don't already have a data plan, it should work. But I can't troubleshoot beyond that b/c you're using an unlocked device.

If we tell HTC that we will stop buying their product, that will get their attention.

Hello fellow Droid'ers,

I've been reading through this post and am most happy of the efforts you are putting forth.

Personally, I've only had my Eve for a few days. I'm still learning all the in's and outs. One point that drew me to an Android phone was the prospect of a phone running an Open Source OS. That usually means that there are often updates to the software.

I will be adding my two cents with Rogers regarding the non-existing, maybe forthcoming upgrade to 1.6 shortly.

Thanks again.

Just sent a twit to RogersHelp

@RogersHelps Will we be informed if there's no update coming for us? Sound like you are waiting for answer rather than investigate for us.

It seems like they are trying to out wait us. If they say no update right now then a bunch of us cry fowl and probably get out of our contracts. but if they keep us in the dark long enough then the ones that are just tagging along will get tired of it and go away to something else. Then they will only loose a few hard core complainers AKA customers.

One thing that they failed to realize though is the type of person who is going to be attracted to the Android phones. Lets face it, I'm in the tech industry and I didn't buy the Dream because if it's good looks  I believe that they are just realizing that they picked the wrong group to hang out to dry.

That makes me wonder if they bring in android phones to boost iphone sales. Since they thought ppl will get frustrated over dream/magic/eve, they will switch to iphone. They probably picked the wrong phones lol.

I don't want to bring any bad karma into this, but suppose we will get 1.6 update.

What are we going to do a year from now when 3.1 is available? The whole thing again?

I'm starting to think that getting updates from HTC and leaving Rogers out of it would probably serve us best...

We cannot get updates from HTC. HTC even said it, someone has to pay for the update.
To be honest, I don't dream that far to get 3.1. I'll be damn happy if they settled at 2.0 or 2.1.
