Root If You are An Idiot and Can't Root Your Phone

Yah in the directions to do this it says you have to switch Win Media Player to SYNC mode.

"Open Windows Media Player and check SYNC (pitfall 3)"

No that's not what I did. I did try that first, got nothing.

Disclaimer: This might have everything to do with new update or just crazyness surrounding my house.

I tried the steps outlined above as written, even opening media player etc etc.

I Got no connection to the phone other than charging it. Which honestly I would expect having used the pull down to show "charge only" on usb connection.

This also cause my Win XP computer to go haywire over the drivers and not finding the correct ADB driver and lots of phail.

To that end I noticed in the drop down there were options I don't remember being there 2 weeks ago when I looked. One being "sync to Media Player" once I chose that XP showed new device connected, tried to open Windows medial player and etc. I stopped all that, and went back to "do nothing when connected"

BTW there are 3 other options on the USB connection, charge only, sync with WMP, and I swear I saw sync with iTunes. I have to connect it again and see.

Anyway, I chose the sync with WMP option in the phones notification bar pull down for the USB connection.

Having connected the phone up before and setting it so "do nothing with connected" option in XP. I had a blank screen.

Then I ran the Rooting file as mentioned in first post. Hit "root me" and bickety bam, 5 minutes or so later. Superuser permissions ninja in the applications listing.

Meanwhile I have been running root explorer to rename applications and have ditched some of the bloat. After setting up a secure recover console image (thank to Koush for that nifty little app), and I will actually delete those files and move from there.

Next thing.

I have the superuser Icon in the app drawer. But now, what do I do? Is the phone rooted and what perks does it give me? I click on the superuser app and it comes up blank! Help!

You are allowed Root access to the phone. Think like ROOT directory. You can get into system files and change names, delete files, edit and replace. You know have much more control over your phone.

There are applications that use this to give you more features, IE the program needs this permission inorder to do more.

Look up applications on appbrain (or market) that require "root". LIke root explorer for example.

does the adb interface need to be installed?
that is my problem. i've downloaded every driver known to man and cannot get the motorola adb interface driver to load.

I had that problem every since I got 2.2

I found when I connect the phone, and grab the pulldown and touch the USB Connection notification. There are some options and right now I don't remember them all. Charge only, and Sync with WMP are 2 of them. Depending on what you choose will make your computer find a different hardware profile. My computer tried to load drivers for each one. I ended up using the 4.7 (I think) moto connect file from the Motorola website. This brings up everything as far as I know.

EDIT: Hope I'm being clear. I should prolly take some screen shots but I don't have dropcap loaded.

Everytime I choose a different option in the pull down, WinXP load a different device driver (although they appear the same to me) the computer doesn't show the device connected until it searches. After winXP sees the different profiles once, it doesn't ask again. though.

This was my problem using the root method. I DIDNOT open Windows Media Player. Its not necessary at all, at least for me. IT was an option in the Pull down notification bar on the PHONE. And once selected, my computer was happy to talk to the DX.

This all started for me, after I loaded OTA 2.2 on the phone.

thanks a lot!
this is bringing me one step closer! i guess i should just be more patient and let the app do its thing. it takes a lot longer than 5 minutes.
does usb debugging need to be "active" while this is running?

That is in the OP and yes it does.

Incidentally until I figured out the usb connection options this, the ROOT EXE never found my phone. So it wasn't a matter of minutes it never showed progress.

You will know quickly if there is a connection you will get the start of a progress bar. Then it takes like 5 minutes or less.

EDIT: Checked the phone. Options on Usb connection are:

PC mode
Windows Media Sync
Usb mass storage
Charge only

for me, charge only allows no driver interface. PC mode and windows media sync don't seem any different.

I'm glad people are finding this post useful. I'm pretty much a dolt when it comes to these phones. I'm not a techie by any streach of the imagination. I ws looking for a way to root my phone and found this. It took a few trial and errors for me to make it work. I tried to explain those in the OP. I know nothing about these phones and the OS, but I cn follow directions and figured someone else might benefit too.

What really slays me tho is the number of posts that say " I rooted my phone now what?" If you have no reason to screw with your phone, don't do it!! If you want to tether, increase the speed, install a custom theme or ROM, then get at it. But don't just do it to say you roote your phone, ya might screw something up. Now days you can probably safely put it back the way it was tho.

This is a great thread, thanks everyone. I was able to root my G1 back in the day, but haven't rooted my new X yet. I'm going to do it tonight. I have a couple of questions.

1) I have a newer version of the .NET framework, will that be a problem?
2) Am I missing a post showing how to restore the phone if I happen to screw something up?

Again, thanks everyone for the help.

This just seems a little more straightforward / less of a hassel  If someone can install a game on a computer, they can root their phone haha.

How to: Root DROID X Running Official Android 2.2 - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

You are joking right? 25 steps is easier than the above method? This is easier than the method I posted? I don't think so by any streach of anyone's imagination. No computer game I ever installed needed this kind of entry at a command prompt, not even in the days of DOS. Lots of these people aren't programmers. Hell some of em just figured out how to power on their phones and send text messages. Think they can find a command prompt?

I'm sure easier methods will be along soon, this doesn't seem like one tho.

Setup:
- Install adb/Android SDK and Motorola drivers for windows(32-bit or 64-bit)
- Download this file: Droid2Root.rar
- Extract to a directory, I used c:\Droid2Root
- Make sure you have USB degugging enabled
- Change connection to PC Mode
Process:
1. Open command prompt
2. cd c:\wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is
3. adb devices (to verify the connection)
4. cd c:\Droid2Root
5. adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
6. adb push su /sdcard/su
7. adb push busybox /sdcard/busybox
8. adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
9. adb shell
10. cd data/local/tmp
11. chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
12. ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
13. let the process run until it returns you to c:\Droid2Root (be patient, it may take a bit)
14. cd c:\wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is
15. adb devices (to verify the connection)
16. adb shell (you should now have a # prompt)
17. mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
18. cp /sdcard/Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
19. cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
20. cp /sdcard/busybox /system/bin/busybox
21. chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
22. chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox
23. mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
24. exit
25. exit

How to: Root DROID X Running Official Android 2.2 - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

Honestly the method in the OP is really only 3 steps. biggest hassle I had, was nothing to do with the root and everything to do with the drivers and phone settings.

That's why I posted what I did on Tuesday. with 2.2 OTA installed, what you choose on the phone makes a big difference on the driver front and what your computer sees as the "phone". once over that hurdle, is plug, run, grab a beer, check phone, see ninja edit, grin.

I'm due to recieve a LNIB DroidX totally stock running 2.2 OTA today, and I just wanted to check and make sure that this is still a workable root solution. From reading the thread that appears to be the case.

I do have an original Droid that I rooted quite some time ago, so I'm not a complete noob when it comes to doing this.

I do have another question though. Can anyone suggest any reason why it would make any difference if I activate this phone and then root it? Or root and then activate?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm using the old Droid to access the web at the moment, since I'm having some issues with my AIRCARD/WIRELESS BROADBAND access.

Thanks for any suggestions.
