Did anyone else see the Pre-Order page for the Captivate???

Rogers just updated on the captivate! They are shipping to retailers in limited supply.

Samsung Galaxy S Captivate update | Rogers RedBoard

That 'update' cracked me up. Horribly slim on details. whoopee it can run apps, even angry birds. I wasn't expecting it to talk about the common problems with all the other Galaxys but it would be nice to know if it comes with the flawed 2.1 or if it will come with the promised 2.2 and hopefully fixes that it desperately needs. The last thing said was something about an update in 'the first half of next year'. you had better hope that doesn't mean 2.2 or that's a long time to suffer with a semi broken device.

But maybe the real delay is that 2.2 so good luck to ya'll.

I am being told by Rogers that the Captivate is being shipped out to retail stores. After the official announcement on Monday, October 25th the device will be available.

I checked out two stores near by and asked them if they had received the device, they didn't deny receiving them, but simply said that a launch date has not been announced yet.

I am debating between getting the Captivate or getting the Vibrant and unlocking it. Dilemma!

^unlock it... and no contract...

Some people might like the Touchwiz UI (?) and proprietary apps and will be happy with it but I personally can't stand it and go with another UI like ADW or Launcher Pro. And who knows what R apps they'll also cram in there and prevent uninstalling. But people are used to bloatware so this is subjective and fixable except for actual removal of the crap.

What's wrong with it?
. Lag, the curse of the chosen file system on the internal SD. Worse for some than for others and depends on how you want to use it or what bothers you when it does lag.

. GPS, works fine for some but a major problem for many folks. I don't believe the 'extensive testing' claim. I don't have a huge problem but I rarely use it and many folks are still complaining. It might even be a hardware issue and will never be as good as the Magic's GPS.

. Download/Recovery mode. Should be fixed on these but if you can't get into that mode with the 3 key startup then you are potentially sitting on a brick if you can't do a factory reset. I'd test that 1st thing and return it if it doesn't work.

. Too easy to corrupt internal memory. The 1st one I had went to a brick all of a sudden and I had to return it because of the lack of recovery mode. Good thing because it did it again but I was able to factory reset which is better than a total brick or a service call. Make sure yours has a working recovery mode.

. Wrong defaults, contacts is a good example, you won't get the normal gmail sync and function you expect unless you remember to scroll down for google type. Too many things try to push you to Samsung controlled apps and services. Carriers do enough of that already so this adds to the problem.

. Speaking of contacts, groups is broken badly so if you have lots of contacts you'll notice it and want a fix. It can be a bit subjective as to functionality and it is alright in theory that they have their own apps but at minimum the standard Google apps should work exactly as they are supposed to which is what I prefer to use.

. The fixes and 2.2 have been promised and so far the delays are getting people very anxious. Rogers either doesn't know that 2.2 should be ready by launch day or they actually know that their update won't come out until mid 2011. It will be the Magic fiasco all over again if it doesn't get 2.2 from the start.

. Kies. The proprietary Samsung PC app for doing updates. This app is by far the worst and most bloated app I've ever seen. It isn't designed for the phone so most of the features are non functional or pointless and you only need it for updates. If they gave an option for a simple update app then I'd live with it but this app is brutal.

Much of this is fixable but not if you don't want to root it and learn how to do it.

I don't know how different or better this one will be to all the others but I have serious doubts. Mine has a front camera but the OS and issues are likely the same so this is just caution. It might let you down if they don't get it right. The better deal is to pay full price for it and skip the contract. At least you can sell it if it turns into a turkey or you get tired of Rogers and decide to unlock it.
There's a lot to like about the Galaxy but there's too much wrong with it at the same time.

No just need another toy to keep myself busy. I think I have GDD (Gadget Deficit Disorder)
I'm going to wait for a game changer to come. I don't want something that is very similar specs wise to my Nexus One. Only thing I really like about the SGS series is the SAMOLED.

Well considering that you seem to change your phone in less than a year, I'd say buy the phone unlock if possible.
