You think the Captivate has problems - Check out the Blackberry Torch!

i was debating taking my captivate back and trading it for a torch...glad i didn't

At my local AT&T store, I was in yesterday to swap my Captivate(long story), and was talking to my sales rep about different phones. I commented on the torch launch and their new tshirts because I noticed that they're constantly wearing new shirts as an in store advertisement for each launch. Well they laughed at said "some launch, we only sold 3 of them all launch day!" OUCH He said that the Captivates were selling real well.

On a side note, I was surprised to hear that they couldn't even keep iPhone 3gs's in stock they were selling so fast...the $99 price point seems to be a big deal to some people.

I read over the list of problems (icons missing, voice echo, calendar event, etc. etc.) and, to be honest, those all seem VERY minimalistic in comparison to what's going on with the captivate. Not saying I'd rather have a torch, but I'd rather have THOSE problems as opposed to a laggy OS, a non functioning GPS, poor audio quality, a lackluster battery, and random shut offs.

the GPS is the only problem that ive seen as a consensus..... the other ones are here and there....

Blackberry doesn't even need to pull out phones like this. They should just continue whatever the hell they're already doing and not do things like this or the BB Bold. Damn, did that fail...

I can't seem to get the battery on my Captivate to fully charge. I am currently on my second captivate as well. The first one would randomly drop the network and not be able to find it for a while, the texting input would slow down to a crawl and the battery never fully charged. I had even left it charging all night the first night i got it and in the morning it wasn't completely charged.

Now this one will not fully charge either. The battery completely ran down while it was plugged in. And yes, the connector was in all the way and the battery icon was showing the charging animation along with the little lightning bolt. I had highly considered the Blackberry Torch before this and still may get it if this crap continues. Oh, yeah, forgot to mention, the GPS took well over 15 minutes to connect and map a trip I take that usually takes 20 minutes. It started giving me directions right as I was arriving at my destination. Nice...

You might want to start a new thread for this. That said, I'd do two things:

- Go to settings, then privacy, and hit "Factory data reset" This will wipe all your data, but might remove whatever is causing the problems.
- If that doesn't work, take it back. It's possible you've gotten two Captivates from the same bad batch. I've had similarly bad luck before.

The GPS issue is a known bug that Samsung will have patched by the end of September.

You must have a jacked up phone if it randomly shuts off, poor audio quality, and bad battery

To people who are still having these problems, I suggest flashing stock JM5 firmware and using a custom rom and lag fix. I have 0 lag, quadrant score of ~2000, GPS works perfect normally get a 8/10 Sat lock in ~15 seconds.

JM5 is not pefect either - BT voice quality is 100% unusable on the captivate. BTW - many have not posted that quadrant score is meaningless on captivate - even Cyanomod has shown how he can hack it to score +3000.

If you are having reboot problems taking it back. No battery life usually means a 3rd party app running everything down. Stock rom works fine - all are other ROMs are test ROMs and require swapping kernels. Newer captivate Roms are also test ROMs with extra logging and debug code.

GPS issue and Lag are the 2 big issues Samsung should address with next update. Current lag fixes have a 50/50 success rate with real world apps, most also add a wakeup lag, so not worth the trade off for me.

I dont use bluetooth look to [insert word here] to me... And yes it can be
"hacked" for most people using the lag fix, it does what it says... fix the lag in real world applications.

Like I stated before I would recommend going this route to anyone who is annoyed with the issues don't wait for Samsung+ATT to push fixes out.

New to the forum and just lurking to learn about Android so please be gentle.

I have the Blackberry Torch and all of the problems listed at the beginning of this thread were more or less fixed with an upgrade to the OS in September. Apart from the poor screen resolution I don't think I really have any other problems with the phone.

I'm looking to Captivate simply because I read quite a few documents on the device. I'm not watching movies or doing heavy web browsing. The Torch's resolution is weak but not terrible except that some fonts are fuzzy which can be a pain. Also, the physical keyboard doesn't really appeal to me that much any more so it is almost useless to me...although it is a nice option for long emails sometimes.

In any case, I've been lurking and notice quite a few issues with the Captivate that will be coming to Rogers in a few days time. My understanding is that most can be fixed with workarounds and third-party apps but isn't as easy a phone to run straight out of the box like the BB. I also realize that this is an attractive feature to Android users in that they can tweak it and I would be interested in rooting it to remove the garbage from it.

I guess my question is - is it really worth the move over to the Captivate now that most of the bugs have been repaired on the Torch given I'm not a big media watching buff and will likely not tweak the OS unless I really need to? Is the Samsung still kind of buggy as suggested in some of the threads? Is there a danger that the Captivate can't be rooted e.g. like the Bell Vibrant evidently not able to be?

Any other advice?

I have the torch and the captivate..i have none of the problems listed above for the torch..mine works perfectly fine with no problems..maybe its only some phones..but i like both phones

Talking about the torch my Mom just got hers. Upgraded from the bold. She has her own business and the blackberry is invaluable to her and she prefers it. AT&T sold her a case with a magnetic lock that totally screwed up the middle of the screen. My Mom thought it was a finger print. I was like no those dolts sold you a case that has a magnet which is wreaking havoc on your screen. Be aware guys.

I have a Captivate. My wife has a Torch.

I upgraded from an LG Shine, she upgraded from a BlackBerry Curve. Neither of us have had any of the problems listed for either phone. Maybe we're just lucky. Personally I think they're pretty good phones.

but the screen is just blahhh

it is basically as good as the backflip i am also using with my captivate)

lol it seems like Amoled i had with the incredible has spoiled me so much that when i look at other phones, the screens are disappointing and super amoled has spoiled me even more lol

It is ashame they are having problems
but like someone said...compared to issues i have had(and i've read)...they are pretty minimal

But like apple, blackberry fanatics will buy these devices...no matter what issues may pop up

I wonder if the Samsung will have a lot of the fixes remedied by the time it hits Rogers? Again, I love the screen but sure don't want to inherit all of the other potential Samsung baggage given that the screen is really the only thing bad about the Torch.

I would still prefer my cappy over any blackberry phones....and I got my captivate two weeks ago and no problems at all....battery was bad in start but its improving every day...GPS working for me...but i dont use it much...so its kinda ok for me if it has problems.

And as Carmen said...people will go for BB if they are fanatics. So we should stop comparing phones and go for one which suits your needs....

My dad had a trial with the Blackberry Torch just over the last month and it was pretty much hell. The lag was like running Windows 7 on a computer with 256 MB RAM, where you get these random times when everything just freezes, you tap the screen a few times, then boom, random shit starts to happen. Like, you delete an email, nothing happens, so you click again, maybe once or twice, and suddenly, 3/4 of your emails be getting deleted and you're just like, holy shit.
