Op, please don't come back telling us how you love your iphone unless you can be objective about each phones pros and cons. It would appear that this would difficult for you as you are prepared to spend 500+ pounds on a phone that can only do similar things as the desire.

Hope you do fall in love with your iphone in the longer term as I have with my desire.

Good luck.

Chris

I too am thinking about an iPhone 4. I went from an iPhone 1 16GB to the Desire, now we have 2.2 I really like the OS but the battery life is absolutely shocking on this thing. A 50 minute train journey into London, during which I browse the web and email people uses up 50% of the battery, it's not unusual for the phone to go from the 9% warning to shutdown in a minute or so. My brother in law has a Samsung Galaxy and he suffers the same problems so I wonder if this is an Android issue rather than HTC.

That doesn't sound right, I get a lot more doing the same, and more, on mine!!

thats normal for any of todays devices with big screens, faster cpu's, thinner form factors and smaller batteries.

iphone 4 is even more of a hog. good luck

Oh and by the way, this is just simply not true. The iPhone4 will last FAR longer doing the same stuff as the Desire. This is just one reason why I wanted to switch.

And, no, this is not the opinion of a deluded fanboy. It just happens to be a fact.

its not fact though, if used the same it uses the same if not more.
you do realise in my line of work im surrounded by these deviecs.
Primerily blackberries, then iphone4's and minority androids.

If you use the iphone 4 for comparably the same amount of time doing similar things it drains just as quickly, it does so because of the screen and cpu just like any other smartphone.
I have to support these devices so im not chatting rubbish.
nearly everyone at my work place has a dock or a lead attached to their computer and has their device plugged in as soon as they get to work.

If you want long bettery life get a blackberry.
Ive got a torch at the moment and after a full charge and recieving about 100 emails a day its still got 1 bar of battery after 72hrs without being plugged in.

enjoy your phone mate but quoting me like im one of the others in this thread that is making ill comments towards you is wrong because:
1. i said you made the right choice for you as you didnt get on with the desire.

2. Im not a fan boy of any device, i go where the technology is and what works for me as i have access to nearly any phone i want so my opinions and findings are based on experience and unbias

I have to say that my two and a half year old iPhone with original battery would last about the same as my Desire when it comes to data, quite simply the battery on this thing sucks big hairy ones, there's no point kidding ourselves. If I could get an extended battery I'd keep it. It gets really hot when being used for surfing as well, does anyone else get that?

thats exactly what im saying.
your old iphone had a smaller screen, 400mhz cpu, its gsm only and not 3g (3g is a massive overhead)

desire/iphone4/blah blah
has 800-1000+ mhz, a 4.3 screen with better lighting and quality, more cpu hungry apps and games, 3g etc etc
you are bound to get a shorty battery life

what im saying is comparatively the desire is no worse off than any other smartphone or iphone4 in terms of battery life

EDIT: the heat is from the cpu and screen,
default governor for the cpu us 254mhz idle and 998 in use, there is no stepping so when using apps the cpu is at full throttle.

Thanks for that. You answered a question I had before I even asked it =)

If I plug it into my laptop and use the MiFi feature the battery actually loses power, although this is only a percent or two over the course of the journey, that is still bad, no?
USB power is about ~500mAh, the battery consumes about 1kAh when being used. It's why when you put the phone down and not use it, it charges much faster than when you're using it during the charge.

Oh wait for fusion cell batteries, and dual CPUs that you could run at a lower MHz for more efficient longer use.

I know your comment was tongue-in-cheek, but just to point out, a fusion cell battery would probably overheat your phone a bit, being at a hundred million degrees and all that. Antimatter is blatantly the way to go - Now with only a 1% chance of catastrophic containment failure when you put a bar magnet near your phone! :p

I work with a guy who recently got an iPhone4. I asked him what the battery life was like, he said "it's crap" so he brought a mains charger to work so he can keep it topped up.

Apple don't have magic batteries, all smart phones are battery hogs. Just like all smartphones have their good and bad points. If I were you I'd reset your Desire to factory defaults and start again. But this time, don't fill it with anything other than genuinely useful apps. That's what I did and my battery performance has changed dramatically. Even doing nothing with it, it was down to orange battery level by the afternoon. Lately it's still at 60% by the time I head home; clearly I had a rogue app that was sapping battery and data. Reset and start from scratch - it's the way forward!

If you do pick an iPhone4 though, enjoy. It's a lovely looking bit of kit

At the end of the day, if we were all the same life would be boring. Don't think theres really any need for sarcasm just because the guy has a need that is better met by an IP4.

If it turns out it isn't the right phone, you'll be welcomed back - at least by me :D

I'm personally waiting for my HD to arrive at 1.35 today !
