Root Few Questions on Rooting the Dinc

few questions:

1.Should i copy SD card to my computer before rooting?
2.Will all apps that have been downloaded and purchased be remembered in the market, via g-mail account, so i don't have to pay for them again?
3.Can a ROM manager(ClockworkMod ROM Manager) make it so i can easily switch between ROMs?
4.Do certain kernels come with certain ROMs, or any recommendations
5.What are the advantages/disadvantages/point to change radios?
I'm new to rooting and really want it mainly to have different looks on my phone, and have free wifi tether.

Please add in any other perks that you guys love.

1. no, your SD card data is saved, as is your internal memory. If you have important stuff on there though, you should probably keep a backup whether or not you're rooted.

2.yes, it'll be fine.

3. fairly easily, although each time you still have to reboot and wait through the flashing process.

4. A ROM comes with a kernel, although it's often stock. You can flash a custom kernel just like a custom ROM, but as for recommendations you'll have to find/research which works best with your ROM.

5. Different radios can sometimes offer better performance. I haven't tried it, but some people use it to increase their cell reception.

If you're looking to do WiFi tether, that's possible without root. do a search and you can find the thread

I agree with everything what tsrdrum said except for #1. Since your question was "Should I..." my answer is yes. You just never know what might happen. Better safe than sorry.

If your question had started "Do I have to..." I would have answered no.

Redemptive Revolution 1.8 is very stable and I can't really find any bugs. Search for it and over at XDA there is the matted blue theme or after you install the rom you can put on the alpha burst theme which is saved on your SD card. You've never seen your phone like this!

Feather v1.7 (2.0 coming today or tomorrow) is super fast and stable

MIUI - i used before N_I_X got on it and that was pretty awesome

SkyRaider - never been a fan, but very very stable and slick

CM 6.1 (whenever it comes out) will be the ish

Desire Ports - have the new sense, but no camera (again, almost done)

If you download ROM manager in the market, there's an option to "Backup Current ROM" which simply backups the ROM, or you can boot into recovery and backup your ROM from there. So in order to get back to stock, just back it up before you do anything else using these methods.

ah gotcha. i want to do it tonight, but i'm still kinda scared, and i don't know why lol. CONVINCE ME! also, will SetCPU work on the Dinc when i root it?

Honestly, having root is great. Just having the option to basically do whatever you want to your phone is amazing. trust me, I used to be in your same shoes when I first rooted, and now it seems so simple flashing roms and adding themes to get your phone looking the way you wanted. As for set CPU, it depends on the kernel you are using, some will let you undervolt and underclock to save battery and others will let you over volt and them you can raise the speed of your processor. It's all really simple, it's just a matter of looking up information through the forums. But the most important rule of root is to always do a backup.

ok, so i rooted, but i went into recovery, and theres no nandroid option. whatever i hit the power button on, just blacks out the screen, and then i have to do a battery pull. i have superuser, but it won't reboot or show me options to do nandroid. any suggestions?

EDIT: do you have to be plugged into the computer to do it?

It isn't called "nandroid" in the current version of Clockworkmod Recovery, just "backup". Same thing though. No, you don't have to be plugged in.

What wayrad said...also, once you are in clockwork recovery you move and select among the menus with the trackbutton and use the power button to come back up through the menu levels to the top level.

Nice I got it. Very easy actually. I think its time to load cyanogen mod 6.0.2.....unless anyone had any negatives about it. Anyone know where i can find a stable Droid x ROM?

I'm not sure about and DX ROMS, maybe there's a theme out? I'm not sure sorry lol, but Cynogen is where I first started out when it came down to flashing new ROMS. It just depends what you're looking for though, cynogen is basically as vanilla as can be.

it's really simple actually, everything that you can do in recovery mode, you can do in ROM manager, such as make back ups, flash roms, restore back ups, and so on and so on. just play around with it and you'll become familiar with it quite easily lol.

lol i'm just afraid to play around. don't wanna **** anything up. will the wireless tether i have right now work with any ROM?

Yeah it should work fine, and it's actually pretty hard to brick a phone lol.

I flash ALOT. I flashed my phone and was too impatient for the BootAnimation to finish and pulled thinking someone was wrong. Damaged my SD card in the process, erasing everything on it and sending my phone into a bootloop everytime I turned it on.

Thats about as bad as you can f**k up. On the other hand, grab another SD from an android phone (stole my bosses from her D2) and load a zip you want to flash, wipe your phone down and install. BAM, fixed.

I bricked my WinMo omnia 5 times. If you breathed wrong you could brick it. Softbricking (bootloop) is about the only thing that can happen on Android for the most part.
