Android alternative to iPod Touch for $200?

The problem with buying an ipod touch is well its an Apple product. If your not part of the whole Apple fanboy brigade then your not blinded by the whole Apple religion and realize their products are not all that great.
Nonsense. I'm totally happy with my iPod and I don't drink Steve Jobs's Kool Aid. Blindly opposing a brand is just as ridiculous as being a fanboy.

I disagree. Blindly hating products because you hate their model; their system, in essence all of them is different. I have used itunes before and hate it so I oppose all products they REQUIRE ITUNES TO WORK (Ipods &Iphones)

It's not quite the same. I freely admit that the ipod/iphone is a wonderful product. BUT, I have no desire to own it. Imagine ANY other company pulling the crap the apple does.

MP3 has been the established music format for how long now? Does Apple conform to this, no, it uses a proprietary format. And a proprietry software.

All the fanboys love it, but if say....Microsoft would have done the same thing, oh my the lawsuites that would have flown, the cries of monopolistic business practices from all the yuppy apple lovers of the world, dogs and cats living together, mass histeria.

These are the reasons I blindly hate apple products. Itunes is a peice of crap (but boy, the way those album covers scroll across the screen sure is nifty!), there is no openness to anything about their products, you as a customer get only exactly what the church of Jobs wants you to, and if you don't like it, there must be something wrong with you.

This doesn't mean I blame people for owning an ipod/iphone, if you want trouble free products that are simple and straightforward, by all means. But for what I want out of a product, I know that I am justified in my strong dislike for apple, because they will never change, and their customers will never demand that they do.

I know that this is an old thread, but I am searching for a device pretty similar to what the OP described. In my search I did find the Samsung Galaxy player which looks extremely promising:

Samsung Galaxy Player 50 is Android's answer to the iPod touch | Crave | CNET UK

However, it is currently not available and may not be in the US until 2011. I was also looking to see if their were other android entries available but this is the only thing I can find.

I think Apple is extremely innovative and has made some great products honestly. They have really driven a lot of consumer product markets and without their innovation I am not sure that there is any push for Androi. That being said, I don't like their policies at all and yes it does affect the consumer experience. I feel very differently about my legally purchased music than apple does. I also like the ability to add memory or change a battery to MY device. To each their own though.

Does anyone else know of any Ipod touch type entries with Android? Currently everyone is making tablets which I honestly have no interest in.

You want an awful lot for very little money, their is a solution however that is within your ballpark. Companies like Metro PCS and Virgin Mobile has android phones; and they are relatively cheap. The Samsung on Virgin Mobile is $250 this runs on Android 2.1
The Metro PCS which I would argue is the better phone especially since you do not plan on using the phone feature or simply don't care. The LG optimus M sells for $230 and has 2.2.

I am sure you can find cheaper on ebay.

PS my android phone is great but it's music quality is not it's strong which is why I have an ipod

There are lots of android phones out now that will fit most of the criteria, including price. My wife was talking about buying an iphone when her contract ran out, so I bought her one of these for xmas:

Huawei U8150 IDEOS | Android Phone Fans

Needless to say, she's mentioned several times how wonderful her new phone is. I haven't asked her about it, but personally, I think the camera sucks though. Hopefully now when her contract runs out, she will get a Samsung Galaxy or something.

a little bit more hands on there. looks pretty sweet. I have no clue about pricing though. To be competitive with itouch though, I'd imagine it'd be less than 200. This is, from what it seems, a galaxy s phone stipped of phone capabilities. What I don't like about it is how it has that fat home button for the iNoobs and looks a lot like an ipod touch.

Nothing blindly. I don't support companies that falsely advertise, falsely accuse other companies, make frivolous patents and lawsuits, require their special software to use their products, etc.

Hi there,

I have just recently started looking at small PDAs or whatever they are called these days. I was surprised to find that the iPod Touch is retailing for around $200, which I consider a reasonable price. I was also surprised that most Android devices cost a lot more than $200. The hardware specs on the iPod Touch are exactly what I would want, but I don't like Apple as a company and I don't like the iPod OS.

What would be a good Android equivalent to the iPod Touch? I don't care if it has phone capabilities or not. And I don't care if it's a well known brand or not. The following are my priorities, in order of importance:

1. Around $200 or less (critical)
2. Available in the United States (critical)
3. Android 1.6 or 2.0 compatible (critical)
4. Very long battery life (critical)
5. WiFI (critical)
6. Camera (critical)
7. Some sort of external memory card slot (critical)
8. GPS (nice to have)
9. Bluetooth (nice to have)
10. Accelerometer (nice to have)

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

The Archos 43 internet tablet is all of that and more.
1. it costs $200
2. its available
3. Android OS 2.2
4. 10 hours video or 36 hours audio
5. yes
6. yes HD camcorder and 2mp camera
7. yes
8. No, that's all it doesn't have
9. yes, and you can bluetooth tether to a cell phone for internet anywhere
10. yes

bonuses-mic, built in stand, speaker, super small and lightweight, high resolution screen (848x480), 16 by 9 screen format, 1ghz processor, reliable system, and nearly every possible audio and video format is playable.

The only disadvantage this has from the iPod touch is the touch screen is resistive instead of capacitive, however from what I've heard the screen is just as sensitive but this means you will not be able to touch 2 points at once on the screen.

The Samsung Galaxy Players.
They offer models that have a 3.6 inch screen, 4.0, 4.2, and 5.0.
The cost is $149.99, $229.99, $199.99,(Currently 169.99 on shop.us.samsung.com for a short time) and $219.99 respectively.
These media players are smartphones minus the phone and rival the ipod touch in nearly every aspect, even exceeding it in some.
