Battery life after update...holy cow!

Well, I'm quite happy now. This is the longest my battery has lasted...I'm finally going to plug it in...15 Hours, 43 minutes with 15% remaining. Much better than before!

Mines abou the same, I was at 20% after 15 hrs with moderate usage. Although I did make a 2.5hr phone call much more than I usually talk on the phone for. So I think my battery would have lasted a lot longer! I don't quite remember what my battery life was before but I do remember I had to charge it at the end of the day, now I feel like I can go maybe a day and a half. I did a manual update.

My battery life has been considerably worse...

I also forced the update..thinking about rolling it back and starting over.
Why would you force the update when you knew the OTA update was coming? Seems to me it is like trying to fix your brand new car when it is completely covered by the warranty and the highly trained techs do the work versus some backyard mechanic?

No wonder you are having issues.

BTW - Battery perfomance improved here after the OTA update:D

I don't think that forcing or not forcing makes any difference. If they did a poll, you would find that there is probably an equal percentage of OTA updaters who are experiencing problems.

And I'm not sure the car analogy is exactly fair. I would compare it more to going to Windows update and downloading and installing an update file yourself rather than waiting for Microsoft to send it to your computer.

I forced the update and I have not had any problems.

My battery life was terrible yesterday after the upgrade. It wasn't great to begin with, but I lost 40% after 5 hours - the only thing I did differently than normal was a 45 minute phone call. I turned the phone off last night before bed to give it a rest and will monitor it this weekend.

Same here - my battery life was pretty good before, now much worse after yesterday's upgrade. Was at 20% by 7 p.m. last night, and I had it plugged into the car charger while using nav for 3 hours, so that should have HELPED. No texting, some email, no music, some surfing.

We'll see if today is any better. BTW, I got the OTA update yesterday morning, so maybe all the syncing, etc had something to do with it, as a previous poster said...

I agree, the car mechanic analogy is kinda unfair. If I were to reword it it'd be more like instead of waiting for the Mechanic to get to my house to fix my car in a slow bus with many stops, I went to the shop and drove him over to my house myself. Same mechanic just different means of transportation to get to my house. Manual and OTA updatse are the same, I just found a way to get it on my droid faster.

OK, fair enough, I like the WINDOWS update analogy. From what I have read, it does "seem" that those who forced update are encountering most problems, however, they may have had problems before, example - WeatherBug chewed up my battery and caused my phone to freeze up, uninstalled, all OK. My buddy has same app on his Droid, no problems? Weird.

Interesting...I have noticed a decrease in my battery life (though I am going to give it a few days...It could be that since the update, I am subconsciously using the phone more than I was in the past). If after another week or so, I am going to take it back to Best Buy and swap it for a new Droid (or at least a new battery, if they will do that)...

Just for future reference in this thread, my build date was week 40/09...

**EDIT** Another note...I force upgraded my phone rather than wait for the OTA update. I'm wondering if this could have something to do with it? If that turns out to be the case, I will wait for OTA next time. This thread will be interesting to monitor. Please (if you don't mind), note in your posts if you force updated to 2.0.1 or got it via OTA...

Same here--I'm 40/09 and did the force upgrade, and I honestly think my battery life has decreased. I'm really not happy about this, as I was looking forward to the increase people have mentioned. :-(

Before the update, I only made two or three phone calls a day and spent no more than an hour on the internet. No text messaging at all. If I took my Droid off the charger at 8 am, the battery was down to 60% by one o'clock in the afternoon. After the update, and with the same amount of usage, the battery is no lower than 70% as late as 11 pm and only down to 60% the following morning. That is a dramatic improvement for me.

However, photos do not appear to be all that much better. But I still absolutely love my Droid.

Battery is much worse afte the upgrade for me. I haven't really changed anything, but did notice yesterday that it was having a difficult time getting a GPS signal. I turned that off and it helped a bit. I figured I would turn on my 'always push' option for email from work. This didn't help the battery and somewhere during the day GPS turned back on!

I di use locale as somoen recommended, but one of the rules I have is to use wifi when I am at home. To do that it needs to know when I am home, hence the GPS always on.

Of course, I can't help matters by continuing to ry apps. I installed Home++ yesterday and love it. Got it where I wanted by today and not it is lagging so bad I may have to uninstall. I mention this only ecause I wonder if Home++ may be some of my batteries problem.

When I first got the droid and charged it up it only went down to 50 percent in 9 hours. I think some days of not using it heavily It can stay at 60 percent at the end of work, but after I got my ota I have no significant change. Still the same for me. Yesterday it was even less because I spent my whole hour break watching music videos I saved on my sdcard.

I received my update via OTA and my battery life has Improved significantly. I'm pro update, I text and browse a lot and get a full days use out of this beast. Not to mention the keyboard responds betterno, but I'm not crazy on downloading apps bc I don't trust them. Mabe bad apps can be an issue...

Have any of you claiming bad battery life had a look at your battery usage? that would be where i would start. anything that is close to or higher than display should probably be investigated. the reason i ask is that i see a lot of complaining and no troubleshooting going on.

for me, my manual/force update has doubled my battery life (40 percent left at end of day...used to run out around 8pm before) the only time i had bad battery life was when touchdown was going nuts in the background.

battery life was horrible before the update, and also after. i was at 50% by 12:30pm, was fully charged at 8:30am. very light usage. wifi, bluetooth turned off. no apps running in the background. fwiw i pushed the update manually. i'm very disappointed at the battery life.

Hmm... I dunno but that sounds like good battery life to me. If your going through 16 hours at 50% battery, technically if you used your device the same way it would reach 32 hours before the battery runs out. It seems to me you're wanting your phone to last a couple days without recharging it. IMO wanting a smartphone's battery to last a few days without charging is a little unreasonable.

My LG Dare had freaking good battery life (I mean when I was on vacation internationally it lasted the whole freaking 3 weeks without recharging). But then again, I wasn't really using it. I wasn't text messaging much (touch screen was such a bother), talked occasionally, didn't surf the web...etc

IMO this is kinda defeating the point of having a smartphone, you get a smartphone to use all it's features, right? So if it lasts you all day doing what you need to do then your battery life is pretty good. You can charge it at night when your sleeping; when your not using/need your phone.

Personally my phone was on for 19 hours with light-moderate usage. I had wifi, gps, background syncing on; with brightness set to its absolute lowest setting. Not to mention I have a few apps which pull stuff off the net at given hours. I think the battery life is pretty good considering what it's capable off.

Now, if you're not getting through the day doing what you need to do and have to recharge in the middle of the day (like a certain phone I will not mention) then I would say that would be considered bad battery life.

Sublimi makes a good point, if your having (what you consider to be bad battery life) if try checking to see what is using up the battery and see if you could improve it by changing a few settings.

Here are some good apps to help check the battery and what I usually to do see how long my battery is lasting and if it corresponds to how I use my phone:

1. Stock Battery Usage monitor in "Settings> About Phone> Battery Use" - This will tell you what is using up a lot of your battery in percentages.

2. Spare Parts app in the market (free) is helpful in determining what is using up battery during partial wake (when your phone is asleep). This can be helpful pin pointing what program might be sucking up juice. Also it doesn't hurt to go through your apps and make sure your background notification/syncing is set to refresh at the interval you want (or change to manual if you want to save battery or set it to refresh at after a longer interval of time).

After looking at the apps above try tweaking your settings to see if it improves at-all.

Optional app: Handy but not all that necessary, I only use it occasionally.

3. Battery Graph app in the market (free) kinda helps as it graphically presents your battery losing it juice. Check to see if it corresponds to your usage make sure it's draining when your physically using it rather than at times when your are not. It can check in intervals of 1min or 5mins (so if you're using it realize that this will affect your battery life).

If all of this fail then then you may have a faulty battery try getting a replacement.

It seems that the battery life mostly has to do with the screen.

I've noticed significantly better battery life and under Battery Usage I noticed that the screen's usage of the battery dropped to around 50% from where it was about 75% before the 2.0.1 update.

My usage has been constant since I got the phone (browsing, texting, gmail occasional game, phone and facebook) and it seems this is responsible for the change. Anyone who's saying they get worse battery life must be using the screen a lot more...

I did use locale as somonerecommended, but one of the rules I have is to use wifi when I am at home. To do that it needs to know when I am home, hence the GPS always on.

You can use a plugin for locale located here Locale GPS Plug-in v1.1 Application for Android | Tools to have locale also turn your gps on or off for certain situations. I have locale turn gps off once I arrive at home or work because it's not doing any good there as I'm stationary. It turns back on for my default situation so it can be of use for other location aware apps. I also have wifi turn off when I'm at work and on when I'm home. Turning gps off at work and home probably saves a good portion of battery usage but I've never really compared.

Also, my battery life seems to be about the same after the update as it was before. Nothing scientific though, just a guesstimate.

second day having the phone, already charged it up and ran it dead. plugged it in last night around this time so its almost going on a full 24 hours on this charge. it wants me to plug it in and shes at about 10%.

my display seems to be taking up all the juice, at 51%.. might try and lower the brightness (i got it on auto)

Combined inbox pulling emails too much maybe?
