HTC Incredible or iPhone4? Help!

Hi folks,

i am currently thinking about buying the HTC Desire(the HTC Incredible is called Desire in europe) OR the iPhone 4

My only problems/questions are:

1. Is the HTC Desire a future proof device? I mean in a timeframe from ~2years? Will i get updates to higher firmware versions and will it be able to run Android 3.X past 3.0, because the hardware requirements are getting higher and i could imagine google to raise them even higher

As a matter of fact i know that the iPhone will get updates for a few years

2. Is the music player really that bad compared to the iPhone

Since no one will really know this for sure, I will give you my opinion. I honestly think that the Incredible will receive updates for the next few years. It's still one of the most powerful (some argue most powerful) android phones out there. It's likely to get 2.3 and potentially 3.0

Alright, guess i would need to look around if i buy the desire.

My biggest question now is: due to the update to 2.2 you can install aps by copying the apk from your computer to your sd card and using an app like apkinstaller to install it, right?
do i need to root my device to get themes and icons/fonts??

You don't need an additional app to install apks from your SD card.

Really? Sweet :D

But can anyone answer my question about themes and icons in combination with Android 2.2 Froyo? Do i need to root the Desire? Has it ever happened that someone messed up so bad that he couldnt use his phone anymore een though he did all security measures like making backups and so on? And how dangerous is it to root/load custom roms

I love it! I've tried many other music players (paid or free), so far I'm sticking with this.

To be fair, it isn't really the music player that has the issues, it's just the overall sound quality on the phone is sub par to the i-phone.

I used to be able to run on the treadmill with my i-phone and it had plenty of sound, the Dinc. while tolerable, it is a much less pleasant experience.

Well i never had an iPod touch/iPhone so i guess i am pretty unprejudiced here

Still need an answer for my question about custum icons/themes without rooting it.

As far as themes and things like that, you can change your background to anything you want, you can also get apps that change the launcher and are very customizable. Generally Android phones can be customized almost anyway you want, with or without root, where as Apple products aren't as free with their customizations.

As far as scratch resistance, I got my incredible the day it came out and have never had a case or screen protector and I have zero scratches on my phone. I am biased but I would still recommend the Desire over the Iphone4.

Compared to the iPhone, Incredible is infinitely more customizable. Even without root the look and feel of the UI can be changed using apps like Launcher Pro or GDE. With root the options are virtually limitless.
I have yet to hear of anyone totally bricking their phone by rooting (at least since a stable method was found to do it). Worst case scenario, you have to do a factory reset and re-install your apps, but backing up your phone should make that easier as well.
Rooting and custom roms on Incredible is virtually foolproof and opens up far more options than jailbreaking an iPhone.

1. we aren't too sure about how future proof the phone will be but I know that without root, it will probably not last as long as the iPhone.

2. The music player is inferior but with winamp and poweramp I am fine.

3. It is reliable from my experience. It has only locked up once but all devices are prone to it. As for battery life, it is almost as good but you can get bigger batteries if you want. I can get a full day worth on stock with medium use.

4. The games that are really high end are on the iPhone but the rest are moving here too. I don't think you will be dissapointed. Also note the market is expanding exponentially everyday.

I personally love my device but both of them are awesome as my friend has the iphone 4. You really can't go wrong either way.

So i guees in the end both phones are awesome and i cant get a wrong pick with either one^^

Edit: Is the Desire with the WInAmp comparable with a normal MP3Player? And does it have the standard functions like search, sort by Artists/Albums/songs etc. and create and delete Playlist as much as you want?

note: this doesn't really answer any of your questions but I just recently switched from a release iPhone 4 to a htc droid incredible on Saturday so I thought I'd give you my overall thoughts.

Build Quality: The iPhone 4 while having both a glass front and back just felt like the quality was just so much better. With my droid incredible, I purchased the white backplate and it already makes noises when I pick up the phone. I've only had the phone 4 days.

Hardware: Both phones are fast. Everyone complains about battery life on the droid incredible, it is pretty bad if you run a bunch of widgets that constantly update, I decided that I didn't want to run any widgets like that and I have no issues with battery life, it'll last me throughout the day with a lot of texting and web browsing. The battery on the droid incredible takes FOREVER (I'd say 4 hours to fully charge from low battery) to charge but the iPhone 4 charges really really fast and the battery lasts a long time.

Software: I have a lot of complaints with iOS when it comes to notifications and my only complaint I have with android is that I can't uninstall Verizon bloatware without rooting my phone.

With iOS text message notifications are annoying, you could be watching a youtube video, receive a text message and it completely stops the video. Or you could be trying to show somebody your phone and a text message pops up and there's no way to configure it to not pop up. I send and receive a lot of text messages so for somebody who doesn't this may not seem that bad, but for me it was really annoying. Also, in order to turn on bluetooth or wifi, you can't have a widget to make it easier, you have to open settings and press a few buttons to get to these settings. Sure it's not bad but if you're like me and like to turn things off when you're not using it, this was annoying. I love how on android I have widgets and can just press them off accordingly. And I won't even get started on the lock screen notifications either.

But, if you jailbreak an iPhone 4 all of my complaints go away however I'm not interested in doing that. If you do mess up your iPhone 4 it's so much easier to restore back to default (in my opinion of course)

Call Quality: Really no difference here to me. Both work great. Especially since you don't live in the US you won't have a problem like I did with AT&T.

Screen Quality: Coming from an iPhone 4 retina display I thought I would be extremely disappointed with the SLCD but I am not disappointed at all. The screen is actually better than I thought it was. The retina display is only slightly better to me.

Overall I'm happy with the switch from the iPhone 4 to the droid incredible, but I switched only for the verizon network. Having said that, if verizon had the iPhone 4 I wouldn't have made the switch in phones. But, in your latest post you're right, both phones are awesome and you can't really go wrong. Basically, the iPhone 4 is very simple and minimalistic. If you like to get creative or get bored of looking at the same theme/layout then I'd go with android. Apple support is also top notch so if you ever run into any issues they'll take care of you. Also, if you get the iPhone 4, I'd highly recommend picking up a Mobile Me subscription for "Find my iPhone" Good luck on your decision.

Yes to all of them.

About the battery: I got a HD2/EVO4G 1500mAh battery and not only does it give it a nice ~20% boost in battery life, the back is now solid as a rock with absolutely no creaks!

I think the best thing you can do is just go to the store and mess around with models for a bit and see what is more comfortable for you. Then again, with android, you are able to customize the hell out of it even without root thanks to things such as LauncherPro and WidgetLocker. If that is your thing, then I would definitely suggest you check out the Desire, if you want something completely user friendly and super clean that will for sure have long official support, then the iPhone is the way to go. Once again, you cannot go wrong either way.

My phone hasn't crashed even a single time since the Froyo update came through--and I almost never turn it off (just on airplanes), leaving it running for weeks at a time. If you're tempted to believe Apple-hype, you should read the following article, written by someone who prefers the iPhone over all others. He seems to live with it, but I would never settle for the problems he talks about at the end of the article. I can confirm the crash issues he talks about: everyone I've talked to with an iPhone experiences them.
