2010 Holiday Phone

I have Verizon as my carrier and I've been looking into getting a new phone around the 2010 holiday season. My two year renewal is up and the Droid X & Samsung Fascinate have really sparked my interest, but the Droid X more than the latter.

If it wasn't for the fact that the Droid X came out mid 2010, it would be a done deal. But, I also know that the DX has had issues with Froyo and that leaves me worried for Q1 2011 Gingerbread.

So what do you guys think? Just say screw it and get the Droid X, a phone that will serve me well despite not having the Gingerbread update, or do you have a better suggestion?

I'd also appreciate any other knowledge on the subject. I've done some research, but I've never owned an android phone or even a smartphone, so I have no experience with this type of decision.

It really comes down to personal preference. The fascinate DEFINITELY has a far superior screen when held next to the X, however I feel like the X is a little snappier.
As far as the gingerbread issue, I haven't heard anything about the X not getting it. In fact, the original Motorola "Droid" has always been among the first devices to receive OTA updates. From what I hear, samsung doesn't have a good track history with software updates.
Also, if you're waiting till around christmas to get the phone, you might think about some other options. There are two new motorola phones and a new samsung phone running android that are coming out at the end of november. There are also rumors about an HTC Incredible HD which may be coming before christmas. (It would be similar in size/form to the X and Fascinate but HTC has a better user interface than motorola or samsung in my opinion)

You should google "Motorola Citrus", "Motorola Droid Pro", "Samsung Continuum", and "HTC Incredible HD" and see if you like the looks of any of those.
I think you'll be happy no matter which way you go, especially when you start downloading apps

You did help, a lot actually. I'm just really afraid that I'm going to spend over $150 and be not "completely" happy with what I've chosen, so I'm being really careful.

I know for a fact that I do not want something as small and bunched looking as the Citrus or Droid Pro, but the Continuum and the HTC Incredible have potential.

I heard that the DX had some issues with Froyo and that's why I assumed that IF they got Gingerbread, or if any current phones did, it wouldn't be for a long time.

I just know that having a physical keyboard isn't a requirement as long as the screen is big enough for a virtual one, and I don't want to feel like I'm on a square-shaped blackberry type handset.
That's why I'm so enamored with the Droid X and the Fascinate, because they've got large screens and it gives them the space to look more minimalist, less like a business handset.

I would wait, we might get some more phones coming out soon that will spark your interest. Like maybe the tegra 2 phone which is suppose to have dual core and great gpu specs.

I really cannot thank you again for bringing the HTC Incredible HD's release date to my attention. I've heard that it's basically like Sprint's EVO 4G with a Verizon nameplate.

Does anyone happen to know if the HTC Incredible HD will be Verizon's first 4g phone after they roll out LTE? Will it even be able to harness the power of LTE? Or am i thinking too short term for a project of this magnitude?

I can't tell whether or not LTE is so far in the future that a 2010 phone will not be able to utilize it, or if a 2010 phone will just need new software. Help?

That's kind of unknown right now, but from what our corporate reps have said, verizon will be releasing 4G around that time. Although I'm guessing we'll be in the same boat as sprint and only have coverage in select cities. To be honest, I wouldn't let 4G or LTE affect your decision. Even if it is available, the coverage will probably be crap for the next couple years, and by that time you'll be ready for a new phone anyway!

And MJM128 is right, we might be getting some phones with dual-core processors which would mean running faster while at the same time consuming less battery power. But it's sounding like those might not be released until the first quarter of 2011.
I'm kind of at a toss up, because I LOVE my incredible, but wish it had a bigger screen. So obviously the Inc. HD looks like the perfect choice... but I reaaallly would like a dual-core processor and from what I understand the Inc. HD will be running a 1Ghz single core :mad:

Yes, it's overwhelmingly frustrated how little information we get about a product until it's actually released. I think I'm going to go to a Verizon store and play with each phone a little bit: Droid X, Dinc, and the Fascinate. If the Dinc HD (4g) is released on time and at least 3 weeks before Christmas, then i'll probably get that.

If I spend my time waiting for the next big thing, I'm never going to be content anyway. Besides, as soon as dual core phones come out, they'll probably have some issues which will just be resolved by either a long-awaited software update or a brand new line of phones.

One key thing to note is that the Fascinate runs TouchWiz, which means Samsung will apply the skin to all new releases, slowing down the release date to the end user. Motorola has very minimal/no skins on Droid products.

2010 Holiday phone....

I'm going to get my dad either an Evo or Epic (his choice, I don't care. As long as he keeps it under $700, I'm fine with it. ;D). That way, when I get out of boot camp and start my A-school, we can still chat halfway across the US.
