Sadly, I dropped my Droid last week at the gas station. We've all heard that the frame is made of metal but I'm not so sure. Basically, I think the Droid's frame is made out of some sort of composite (graphite?) type material. I'm at work so I'll take detailed pictures when I get home...but this thing is definitely not metal...

So, was there any damage? And if so, to what -- the phone or the floor of the gas station?:p

its actually made out of carbon from chuck norris's skin... its pretty damn durable...

lol.

I'll upload some pictures tomorrow of the Droid's durability vs. the iPod touch just for a basic reference. I've had both the same amount of time, and the iPod touch and the Droid have basically been in the same conditions. Accidentally putting them in the same pocket as my keys, losing them in the car somewhere, leaving it to skid around in my dash, etc.

the screen is actually crystal, not glass. here it is word for word from the email i got from "Evelina A" from motorola e-mail support:
Please note that the display is made of is crystal.

i know the frame has metal in it, but it is obviously not 100% metal. you can basically tell by when the phone is cold, the metal parts are cold and the plastic/composite parts arent...

Cool info about the screen being crystal and not glass!

Also I agree that it is somewhat metal if not all metal. I didn't really notice when I first got the phone since it was brand new and I was too excited to start it up but when I turned off the phone for sometime due to the installation of the invisible shield screen protector, the top frame was icy cool!

ive dropped mine like three times now and there is not a single scratch or bump. all times on hard or textured surfaces including granite tile, corrugated steel, and water, ok not water, but sidewalk. also it was sitting in my cup holder when i took a sharp turn and it shot out and hit the passenger side door. I think its made out of cats, cause it seems to land feet first.

There's a lot of metal there, maybe too much. When I hold my hand anywhere near the antenna (which is in the chin at the bottom of the phone) the 1x signal drops way off. To get good voice reception I have to hold the phone in my fingertips, without touching the chin. I'm curious if anyone else has this happen.

I think there's definitely a Faraday cage effect impacting the signal on this phone with the amount of metal in use. On the other hand, anyone who is even minimally careful will have no trouble keeping it new looking over the 20-24 months of ownership.

Specifically, the largest diameter of the phone, around the middle, is made by a strip of some kind of plastic. The frame around the glass is metal (this part gives me the willies, as I fear the glass getting cracked by a dent in the metal), and so is most of the back of the phone, which is coated in a rubberized substance. A metal battery door, too. Metal within the phone, behind the keyboard, helping to make it more rigid. But plastic behind the screen, as you can see when you slide the phone open.

The only other Verizon phone I can think of with this amount of metal in it is the Blackberry Storm 2 (the battery door, and the plate within the phone behind the touch screen sensors, among other things).
