Help Call quality very sub-par (not signal strength)

I've had my Dinc since release day and have had a few episodes of the person on the other end of the phone not being able to hear me. That seems to be less of an issue now. Unfortunately I am having the garbled voice and catching every few words issues now. Bummer.

So any news on the update that is coming? I keep hearing about it but nothing yet, that I know of anyway. How *would* we know if we got an ota update?

I too have been experiencing this problem with a 2-week old DInc (just after I switched from AT&T iphone because I was tired of dropping calls). I have talked to several Verizon reps and they are saying that replacing the phone will not correct it but there is a software update that is almost ready for release that does fix it. I'm not sure what to believe. They also said popping out the batter and restarting is a temporary fix. I did this with no success. So are we saying there are folks out there who got a replacement phone and the issue was fixed? Help!

I was one of the earlier posters here, and I can say that I finally received a Dinc replacement that sounded better. It took a few replacements though. I thought maybe I was just being too picky or something, because of the folks who said they had no issues. I finally got one of those good ones though. And I believe the whole "update is coming" is hogwash now. I was told that directly from HTC. That anticipation is probably enough to keep people waiting until they're locked in after 30 days.

By that time I got a good one, the Droid X caught my eye. I have it now and no problems with audio quality or signal on this unit, whatsoever. Both HTC and Motorola have been mailing it in lately on QC, but after having a Dinc, EVO and Droid X, I'd say the DX quality has been the best (or at least the tallest of 3 midgets).

Bottom line, you shouldn't have to deal w/ replacements, bad audio, promises of updates, etc.. Give a couple replacements a try if you have the patience - and if you don't luck up on a good batch, I'd try a different model. (sucky part is, this damn inventory issue makes the replacement thing hard too...I had to be pretty strategic)

I would love to - but I can't even get a replacement now! How did you do it? They are convinced that it won't help so no matter who I get on the phone and how hard I argue....I get no where. Any advice for me?

I had to do it the hard way. I got Dinc #1 pre-order, via Verizonwireless.com. Audio quality was crappy (garbled, robotic-sounding). I ordered a replacement and they said it would take about a month to receive it. I got tired of waiting, so I returned it and got a Sprint EVO. Shortly thereafter, I noticed in the forums that some people had DInc's with decent quality, so I went to a local Best Buy (because the Dinc was what I really wanted), and purchased Dinc #2. That one had garbled quality too. So, I basically just stalked different Best Buy's by calling them daily to check inventory. I stumbled upon one that had just received a shipment, so I ran over and replaced Dinc #2 for Dinc #3. Dinc #3 was a winner (or at least better than the others). Call quality was much better (not as good as the DX I have now). Still, I could definitely hear voices much better.

So, long story short, those who go through a big box like Best Buy actually have an advantage because they seem to get random shipments - and with multiple stores, the odds up getting lucky w/ replacements are decent if you're stalking them. It's a numbers game, but I faired much better off than waiting for my first replacement (which actually just arrived about 2 weeks ago - along with a $25 gift card that I used towards the purchase of my DX). :D

Again though, sucks that some get lucky by getting a good batch for their first handset - while others have to do what I did.

awesome - thanks for that advice! Also sounds like BestBuy is more apt to offer a replacement than verizon. Even HTC says to get a replacement yet Verizon swears the update will fix it. What a sham.

I DID however find a Verizon employee who said to simply tell customer service that your screen went blank and you'll get a new phone no problem! :)

So I took the EVO back because Sprint sucked for me in these parts. Got the Droid X. I must have a magnetic personality or something, but my DX kept rebooting (huge thread on Moto forums), so I took that back Friday because I was in the exact same situation as with the DInc....30 days up and no replacements in sight.

Gah!! So now, DIncs are shipping this week and DXs not until early Sept. What to do? What to do? Has anything been patched since I was out of the loop?

Feeling so screwed over by Verizon!! Just. Release. A. Phone. That. Works!

so when is this update suppose to be released? I've been waiting for well over a month now and they say next to nothing about it

There seemed to be more than a few who had call quality issues before. So much so that Verizon/HTC said they were working on a fix.
What happened? There's been no software update for this STILL. Yet there seems to be little or next to no complaints about this anymore.
Did peoples problems miraculously just go away?

I still have occasional quality issues even when my signal level is good

I got an Incredible on Monday and I really like it for the most part, but the incoming audio quality is just horrid. It sounds like some really really bad sound quality algorithm that drops the first and last 10% of every word. I just can't understand what people are saying unless I really focus and strain to decrypt the 80% of the word that's left over.

I called Verizon for another issue today and I described the situation to the CSR just in passing (IE..."Sorry, I can barely understand you!"). The CSR said that they've had TONS of complaints like that, and that Froyo will fix the problem in September. I was going to go to the Verizon store anyway since I'll be shopping next door to it so I didn't ask them to send out a new phone (plus I don't want to deal with a parade of refurbs). But we'll see.

Obviously, the current situation is unbearable. I literally can't use the phone as a phone.

It's unlikely that replacing the phone will fix the problem as others have reported. Your only choice is to wait for the update or get different phone. I've been waiting and I hope the update will be out next month. You have 30 days to return the phone, so I would wait. My 30 days are up, but my account is noted that if the update doesn't fix the problem, I can get a different phone.

Hmm...Well I tried this fix:

Improve your Call Quality - HUGE DIFFERENCE!

and called my friend, and I had no problem understanding her so it might have worked. I'll test it out some more, and probably see what the Verizon store says, but I'm encouraged. As long as it's a software rather than hardware problem!

That has helped some. But note that EVRC-B does not work in all locations as it's not compatible with some cell towers. If you can't make a call in a certain location (while traveling for example), you'll need to change it back to EVRC.

No no knows for sure if it's a hardware or software problem. Many have replaced phones with no improvement. As I said, hopefully the forthcoming update will resolve the issue.

Call quality for me is inconsistent, sometimes it is great and sometimes it is terrible. At any rate, it obviously is a software issue because it at times sounds great. Does not appear to be a network issue, as the signal strength seems to make little difference.

It's unfortunate; this phone runs 3G data like a champ, but placing a simple phone call seems to occasionally throw the phone into tizzies that make the person on the other end sound like an malfunctioning robot.

Verizon/HTC/Google/Motorola - Your job is not done once I have the phone; we still expect service here. Froyo 2.2 (rolled in with lots of fixes for respective devices) has been long overdue on MANY Android handsets. There are a lot of nagging issues that need to be fixed on every phone in your current lineup, and they are even more immediately necessary than Froyo itself is ATM.

Stop with your complete ignoring of our questions as to what/when is being done here. Stop with your cute twitter posts about Froyo and fixes coming. Stop with your obscenely bureaucratic and slow process of software development and approval. Put how ever many people need to be on it, and get these OTA's OUT! Your consumers demand it if you want us to keep purchasing and recommending the Droid line.

This phone is dying a slow death. I wouldnt be surprised at all if they have already pulled all major support efforts away from this device!!

I mean common there are so many small issues. Issues which are not having anything to do with UI which should be very easy to patch via software updates. But not a thing? Not a mention of a thing?

I wouldnt be surprised if froyo fixes nothing. I agree with another poster, this time they are taking is to just perfect their bloatware.

God how i loved this phone. I still do! But I will regret this for a LONG time if this thing is not fixed yet.

I also have random reboots, i have to bump charge in order to get fully charged, and sometimes my screen gets whacky and scrolls by itself.

I posted to them, but they just dont care! Im so sick of "We have no info on that at this time" Oh, but you have a SHITLOAD of money thanks to us though, dont you!

is the dInc really old news already?? - Verizon Wireless Community

This is why people buy an iphone. However, Apple has stumbled with the iphone4 antenna issue and with the iPhone 3g OS4 upgrade that rendered the phone nearly unusable. But at least they support their phones. Unfortunately, Verizon and the manufactures plan on releasing dozens of android phones, instead of providing a high level of support for 2 or 3. This is sad but true. A Dime a dozen with support to match. Prove me wrong Verizon, HTC and Motorola. We'll see what happens...

I received a call from HTC customer support as I was heading into my office this morning. In a nutshell, all he had to say was sorry for the problems you’ve been experiencing with poor voice quality on the Incredible and that HTC is aware of the issue and working on a fix. But of course, there was no firm date for when that “fix” would be available. Best he could state was, “…within the next few weeks”.So basically it’s the same story we’ve been hearing ever since the Incredible was released.

My wife and I went into the Verizon store on Saturday (a mistake) with the intent of seeing if we could switch both of our phones for the Droid X. While waiting, we had a few minutes to play with the X and discovered that browser download speed was extremely slow when compared side-by-side with the Incredible. In general, the UI is much slower on the X.

So it looks like we’ll wait a little longer with hopes that the “fix” shows up sooner than later (and actually works!) or that the Samsung Fascinate is finally released on VZW and provides an acceptable device AND phone experience.

We’re really fed up with the way Verizon AND HTC have handled this and wish we could switch to another carrier without it costing us $700.
CRAP!

No Fix. The phone is defective or it's a design flaw. Some have the problem while many don't or don't complain about it. You can try this and see if it helps:

You have a choice between EVRC and EVRC-B Voice Compression

Procedure:

Go to Phone and dial ##PROGRAM and press Call.
The password is six 0's (000000)
Go to NAM CDMA Settings
Change "Preferred Voice service option for Home Page", "Preferred Voice Service option for Home Origination", and "Preferred Voice Service Option for Roam Origination" to EVRC-B.
Then press Menu and hit the "Commit Modifications" option.

REMEMBER: CHANGING THE WRONG SETTINGS IN THE PROGRAMMING MAY CAUSE YOUR PHONE TO STOP FUNCTIONING. Also, EVRC-B is not available in all locations, so you may need to switch back if your tower doesn't support it...

I have had the phone since launch and am experiencing call quality issues. Its very noticeable to me when i use in ear headphones. You can really hear the static then and I know its not my ears.

I am dealing with it but it will be the reason I get a new phone. Running Skyraider 3.3.3, the rest of the phone is 99% great.
