Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Releasing Soon

From what I know of it, Gingerbread is going to be a minor release for current phones and a stop gap for the Slates until Honeycomb gets released in jan/feb 11.

It is reported to have a smaller footprint (so more space for apps etc) and will implement better power management (so should be a better battery life for stock settings) however we shall see. I think it will deffo come as an ota update in a few weeks time though......

The actual phone update will be around q1 2011 I heard

Hi William, I am on the same boat as you but havent flashed a custom rom. Can you provide me a link to default froyo htc rom (not o2) just like the one you are using? are you having any performance issues with the phone with the custom rom? Also, did u get answers to your questions above? cheers mate.

From the list of functionality it looks like they are still not sorting my biggest issue which is the lack of hands free contact selection and dialling via bluetooth! Anyone know of a work around for this which will work in the UK (Orange, 2.2)

Here we go again, we've only just had froyo, well most of us, and to be honest was not the great leap forward we were led to believe,imo, so all in all I am more interested in getting the new Sense.just my pennies worth

I'm having difficulty getting excited about this. I'll believe it when I see it. And even then, it doesn't sound too earth-shattering (from a 2.1 - 2.2 perspective...)

Yes, it looks like Gingerbread has been confirmed as 2.3 and will be releasing for Nexus One in few days:

Open Handset Alliance member confirms Android 2.3 is Gingerbread, coming soon to Nexus One -- Engadget

Now we can start waiting another 2-3 months expecting Gingerbread to be released by HTC and the carriers.......... AHHHHHHHHH

2.1 to 2.2 wasn't a big update. Anything that gets a .1 increase is mainly system tweeks that the user doesn't usually see. 2.3 will be the same, mainly system improvements and bug fixes and not a lot for the user to get too excited about.

It's 3.0 where the changes should really happen.

Ah good times, i personally cannot wait for this. Although i am slightly disappointed this wont be as big as it was first made out to be. Seems like honeycomb will be the 'big' update.

But seeing as i am rooted, no problem, bring it on

I find all this Updates quite exciting & for all those who moan about the cloud issue with Google - they've set outstanding standards for mobile users in regards to and against a certain fruity named mobile (hock spit lol)

It will be great, especially if we get All the sense UI updates as well... Though cant be sure.

Also it will be at least a month on top of the release for HTC to sense it up.

So, n00b question perhaps. If HTC gives the Desire the Gingerbread upgrade OTA, where would that actually install? Does it eat into the already limited free internal memory, or is there a partition reserved for the OS that has enough space to allow for upgrades?

Wish the Desire had more internal memory, it's my one gripe with the phone.

There's a partition for the OS with plenty of room for Android updates, internal storage space will remain at it's usual tiny size

but you will need at least 25mb free internal storage space for the updater to work in during the installation. After the update, any temp files in storage are deleted and internal storage returns to normal.

Great, so if I clear a few caches or something I should be good to go with Gingerbread and still have space to squeeze in another app or two
