Samsung Galaxy S - Froyo

I'm an Android and Galaxy S nooby. I've only had the phone for 12 hours. I can't do the registry changes as my computer... err.. doesn't have a registry!! OK I don't use Windows - I use Ubuntu aka Linux.

Anyway, while I'd like to get 2.2 as the the Skype app finally works on it, I'm in no rush and will just wait for the imminent release any day now for the UK/European market.

What I'd like to know is, how will I know when the update is available?

sorry, but skype say the galaxy s is not supported yet.

Yes, I realise that, but I know lots of people have got skype working on 2.2. Just read the skype forums.

Anyway, forget skype... as I asked originally - "How will I know when the official 2.2 update is available?" Will my phone just magically tell me? Do I need to get the phone to scan for it?

Thanks

the software Samsung Kies should tell you when you click 'Update Firmware' on that.

to all: I think Froyo JPO, CF-Root for JPO + OCLF is the fastest ive got my froyo build to be, not only does it feel super snappy - but scores only 2000 in quadrant (even though that software is built towards snapdragon CPU's etc, its still nice to compare different kernals etc to myself - even if, the 'feel' of it is what matters most to me.)

ive tried Hardcore's SuperMod kernal, and although it brought my available RAM from 304mb to 341mb, the phone just didnt feel as snappy to me, even with numerous different lagfixs that i trialled while using it (lagfixs came with it, tried most of them without any 'wow factor')

i think it just doesnt work as its not based on the JPO kernal, whereas ChainFire's JPO cf-root kernal, is.

Thanks. Sadly however I use Ubuntu 10.10 (aka Linux). Kies is Windows only. Ubuntu can emulate windows and allow Windows programs to still run under Ubuntu. I have various windows programs such as Picasa and specialist electronic circuit simulation software running under Ubuntu fine.

While I haven't had the time yet to try, allegedly Kies won't even install or run under ubuntu's emulator. I can copy files across fine, it's just that Kies doesn't work.

So...... is it just a case of copying the relevant files over? Do I just need to google for the correct files or can someone provide me with a link please?

Thanks

Headset control on Froyo (android 2.2) for my Samsung Galaxy S (sprint epic 4g) phone:
Currently, I can't control audio from my headset control buttons (i.e. to pause/play or fast-forward songs) on my Epic 4g phone... read online that samsung galaxy s phones don't have that available (atleast on Android 2.1).
Does anyone know if Froyo on Samsung Galaxy S supports that?
Being a music buff, I would like to know this while I decide whether to keep this phone or not (currently in the 30 day trial).

Not sure if this is the right thread for this message...

sure,

download Samsung Kies version 1.5.1.10074_45 or something that is not the latest, you will need to un-install the latest then install this one.

i used this one, as the new one would crash.

1. open Samsung Kies and let you phone be detected as usual.

2. keep Kies open, minimize it and run regedit in windows.

3. locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB\

4. you should see some folders, named 1,2,3 etc in that folder, look for the one that mentions your current firmware, IMEI number etc etc.

5. once you know the correct folder (onnly one folder mentions this information), you need to modify 3 strings by simply clicking it and selecting modify.

6. Change these 3 strings to this: ( but id remember your old 3-strings information if i were you, i did just incase i need them in the future. (you never know - so i jotted em down in a notepad file :) )

Yeah I tried it and it didn't work for me, just said that this device does not support firmware update *sigh* I don't know when my region in the Caribbean will get the update as I don't know where my phone came from. Our provider (LIME), just got these in but I don't know what part of the world they got em.

Guess i will just keep trying the Kies updater every so often to see when it's available. Thanks anyway.

Ok I have now offically DEBRANDED my Galaxy S and no longer have any of vodafones junk on my mobile, I am also fully Froyo 2.2 upgraded, this is the proper version and not the reg edit messing around thing that people do which risks bricking your phone. And I didnt have to use kies for anything other than backing up my contacts (and you dont even need to do that if you have your contacts on ur sim and other data on SD card). Anyway im vodafone free now other than my contract lol

In the end I had to get hold of a Windows PC and install Kies. Kies recognised a UK update and allowed me to download an official update to give me Froyo JPO.

I haven't found a way to update the phone without using Windows.

I have however managed to root my phone using Ubuntu/Linux. The windows tool SuperOneClickFix 1.5.4 simply copies over the relevant files and forces a reboot using adb. Mount your phone, copy over the files to the phone, and force a reboot using adb. Using update.zip on Froyo doesn't seem to work by the way.

Skype finally works on Froyo. Either updating to Froyo caused a new Skype update to be downloaded, or coincidentally a new update of Skype became available within a day of me updating my phone.

Hi Guys,

First time doing the Froyo upgrade via ODIN or Kies ? I have just shared my experience in my blog with step by step instructions and screen shots..

Also the files that i used to perform it.. I uploaded to my personal server for sharing them faster.. the common download server like megaupload.com sucks..

Here is the link http://giztech.in/

Enjoy the froyo.. if you like it ... leave a comment in my blog..:)

All these delays have me thinking that maybe they are skipping 2.2 and releasing 2.3? Doubtful, but I can dream can't I?

Either way, I'm cool with 2.1. The majority of people are happy with it as well, but negatives are emphasized more than positives. Hence the the dire need for 2.2 that we all see.

I may not even update to 2.2 when it comes haha! If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
