The8Pen keyboard?

My thoughts on the subject:

Having said that, 8pen has left a lot of room for improving this experience. Some suggestions I would make are:
1. create option to disable auto space when lifting your finger
2. keep spelling correcitons on screen after lifting your finger
3. Suggest words way more often. (i find myself pausing in the middle of a word to find the next letter and it brings up the special characters. If I could finishe the word wrong and have it suggest a word that is close and in the dictionary, it would save a lot of backspacing)
4. show the letter currently selected in the text box you are typing into instead of bolding it under your finger... what good does it do if you can't see the letter they say you are entering.
5. I thought this as voice input? where did that go?

I could go on. I think this thing has potential and I will stick with it for a while because im a glutton for punishment, but they have left a lot of room for improvement.

I'd like to add that during mid type, they should prevent auto landscape so you don't lose what you typed.

Yeah, I used to be bad about texting and driving but once I upgraded to a touchscreen (BlackBerry Storm over 2 years ago), I wouldn't allow myself to play with my phone while behind the wheel. It's just not worth it - way too hard to play with these devices and drive

Don't take this too personally 2010ZR1, but I need to get this out.

I personally have huge issues with people texting and driving. They are a menace to all of us just trying to get home to our families. I have had 3 near misses as a driver in the past 2 months and 1 as a pedestrian so close that they ran over my foot (but I was wearing my steel toe shoes). She looked up at me like I was the problem......and then realized that she ran over my foot.

Sorry to get off topic, but to all the 8pen users, thanks for your feed back on this forum. I was really on the fence about this, despite my grievences with the stock keyboard. I think I will wait for this to be refined and hopefully a free trial be offered.

Cheers,

-Sev
I understand, ever since I made the switch to touch screen, I have stopped texting in the car. I guess it was about the fact that I don't need to look at the screen to use this keyboard.

I also read an article (can't find it this second) about how texting (in any form) and driving makes you 23 times more likely to have an accident.

here is the Wikipedia comparison....which is unreal....
Texting while driving - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  • Unimpaired: .54 seconds to brake
  • Legally drunk: add 4 feet
  • Reading e-mail: add 36 feet.
  • Sending a text: add 70 feet[12]
I personally love driving. I drive a manual as well and get pure joy of operating my motor vehicle. I even raced in an amateur event when I was younger (was a blast). I can't ever imagine allowing myself to be that distracted with all the physics that are involved with a moving car.

I am glad you guys have stopped texting. Just need to spread the word. We have enough bad drivers already.

Cheers,

-Sev

P.S. Sorry that this is off topic again....i wont say anything more about it in this thread.

Been using this for about two days instead of Swiftkey and I am really starting to like it. It definitely has a steep learning curve but I feel that it has a lot of potential. It's really all about learning where the keys are, I compare this back to my days in high school computer class where they took the keys off the keyboard so you couldn't look down. Right now I save this keyboard to smaller task so as texting, searching for stuff, etc... and if I have to do something heavy I switch over to Swiftkey. Android makes it pretty easy to switch keyboards so I don't mind. I am very curious to see how I like it after a weeks worth of use. It will take more then a day to start getting use to it, so if you are opened mind give it a shot and except the frustration as experience.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but, do people really have that hard of a time typing on a QWERTY? I'm all for innovation but I don't see this catching on at all. Swype is the wave of the future as far as typing is concerned. I wish they stopped being so fickle and uptight about releasing it and apk's so everyone could experience it's greatness

People aren't switching because the QWERTY is bad, they switch for the same reason you switch to swype. I like this because I believe it is easier to use without looking than a qwerty would be. The letters are so close on a qwerty that it requires more attention than this does. I am also waiting on the blindtype keyboard, which is qwerty, but allows for gross errors and still can figure out what you are trying to say.

I don't have swype, heck, I don't even know where to find swype. So I'm telling the truth in how i say how much i like this keyboard

That's good to hear. I've had it installed (8pen) for a few days now, I just don't have time to practice while at work and when I get home in the evenings the fiancee doesn't let me play with my phone too much :(

I am interested in this keyboard, but from what I saw of blind type, I will probably wait for that. Swype was good while it lasted, but after the 2.2 update my .apk didnt work anymore and now the beta is closed.

If swype gets released anytime soon, I will get that. I am just tired of the errors of the stock keyboard. Ultra Keyboard, Slideit and swiftkey just dont do it for me. I get similar issues with them as the stock QWERTY. I give 8pen credit for coming up with something new and potentially faster than standard qwerty keyboards.

Has anyone noticed a stock keyboard lag with the incredible since the 2.2 update? It drives me nuts that I can type faster than the phone can understand, which leads to more errors.

I just got it now that it's free.

I can say now, after 5 minutes of just messing with it. There's less hassle with trying to hit those tiny keys. But it's certainly a lot of memorization.

I would think it's comparable to how a lot of people on older phones could text in with the number keys, either just mashing numbers till you got the right letter or using T-9.
It takes time, and of course it's new. I've known 2 (abc), 3 (def), 4 (ghi), 5 (jkl), 6 (mno), 7 (pqrs), 8 (tuv), 9 (yxz) Since I was a little kid, wondering how you dialed stuff like, 1-800-CALL-ATT, or collect.

I'm gonna give it my best effort. Though I doubt I'll sit there doing heavy typing until I'm good at it.

I just got it this morning also. I think it works well, especially for those of us with larger fingers. Easy enough to switch back and forth if needed. They added many of the features people were complaining about last week (you can disable auto-space and it shows a pop-up pad so your finger doesn't block everything as you write, etc.)

Worth at least twice what I paid! ;)

I can't figure out how to get my 8pen off of ALL CAPS.

I can press the up arrow in the bottom left corner and get it to show lowercase, but as soon as I start (typing) it goes to all caps. This is the new free version. The day it came out I tried it out and didn't have this problem.

I'm sure this is a face palm deal, but I sure can't figure it out.

Tap up arrow once to capitalize only the first letter, tap it again to keep Caps lock turned on, tap it again to turn it off
