Should I get the captivate? Or wait for any new christmas/Q1 phones?

There's always going to be something better just around the corner. You just need to decide when you want to hop on the train, and then learn to be content with your decision, or else be an upgrade freak.

The Captivate is amazing and great in many ways, but it has its quirks too. It's up to you whether you can live with the quirks or whether it'd be preferable to live with your current phone.

i was on the fence but ended up buying the captivate. AMAZING phone. There was a couple things that could have been improved but with all the support from the community, ran a few programs that omtimized the performance and the phone literally flies now with everything i do. Always something around the corner, but you won't be missing out if you pick up the captivate~;)

Oh and currently I have the samsung impression..and honestly it is really bad. It's leggy and glitchy and not very fun at all. Anything will be an improvement to this phone. I love my jailbroken itouch so the android system seems perfect for me

Yeah if you can live with your current phone then wait.

The Captivate is capable of being being a great device, but it needs work to get it to that point. For people in the know, that is not a problem. But the average customer should be able to open the box, turn it on, and be able to use it with no problem. That is not the case. And, Samsung and AT&T aren't breaking any speed records releasing fixes to it's customers.
I would wait for the Motorola Olympus.

I would HIGHLY recommend waiting and getting the nexus s which should be out before the end of the year. I'm starting to believe the only android phones worth getting are the ones directly supported by google with the stock android OS. Our captivates are rumored to get froyo before the end of the year which sucks since gingerbread and the nexus s is rumored to be out before the end of the year.

Now that the phone has been out for half a year, should i get this phone or wait for the inevitable galaxy 2 phone to come out? This phone looks really cool but I'm not sure what to do.

Galaxy 2? That's a long wait. And dual cores? Really? I don't even get a whole day of battery out of my Captivate.

They'll release something next summer no doubt, but if you're in the market for a phone today, I'd say any of the Galaxy S phones are your best bet. If you're comfortable with jailbreaking, you should be fine loading up a custom ROM to get 2.2 (I'm running Cognition myself, and it's great).

A phone that shuts off by itself is a REALLY big annoyance.

Agreed, but this appears to be only affecting a small subset of users. I personally have never experienced it, and I have had the phone since the day after release and have been running LauncherPro the entire time.

The standard fix is to replace the phone, which seems to address it for pretty much everyone, suggesting a hardware issue on some phones. If you haven't exchanged your phone yet, that's what you should do.

Honestly I'd wait.
This thing has warts that, as robhs pointed out, can be overcome with apps and tweaking. Examples:
My wifi randomly loses communication. I have an app that now prevents that.
Battery life was significantly lower than on my 3GS. I've tweaked that out now.
Yahoo! Mail doesn't push. I've switched to Gmail for everything.

The hardware can be impressive (as long as your GPS works and it doesn't randomly shut down), but between Samsung and AT&T Android doesn't work the same. This, of course, can be overcome with a custom ROM.

I guess it depends what you want. If you want something that works very easily, something like the iPhone might be better.
If you like to tinker with a device with a more usable screen, the Cappy might be good for you.

Well I'm fairly knowledgable of how to jailbeak and to get all the custom backgrounds and roms and thats mainly why I want the Captivate because of the Android system and how customizable it is. I'm sure If i have it i will get used to it. If it was September or August I would for sure get this phone, but now later in the year everyone is saying that better phones are on the way, like the Nexus S or Motorola Olympus. Like someones said, the train never stops moving, you just need to make the jump at some point.

And whoever is craving for dual core must carry like a pocket of spare batteries around.

+1 Unless there is a breakthrough in battery technology dual cores will be woefully impractical. They will probably use a dynamic power management that turns off one core when it doesn't need it...that would make sense, but it would still draw much more power while in use then current high end phones (which already have lackluster battery life).
