Shrimpocalypse Tower Defense!

Hey xenole, cheers for the feedback :)

I would like to see longer games. 50 waves isn't really enough to be honest - 100 would be nice or even infinite.

We're about to release a patch with a survival mode in it, with it's own scoreboard for how long you survived. It would be out now, but someone pointed out a saving related bug I need to fix quickly. It should still be this week, with a shedload of new content.

Seem to lose 90% of the time on wave 48 on the hardest level. Some crabs always seem to move through freeze towers, mortars etc without taking any damage, or have a maximum of one hit left to kill them yet still survive everything.

I'll have a look and see what's happening, it doesn't do anything weird, the bars are a straight representation of the amount of health, when they get to less than 0 they die. The waves do move faster and faster though, money spent on tracking really comes into its own on the highest level.

It's balanced so the top end of INSANE should be pretty tough, even maxed out. If you're almost there I'll have to quickly get some more high end stuff added!

How many times can I increase the power / tracking etc of towers? Got a few on Level 6 or 7 but it costs around 640 coins to upgrade further.

They go up to 10, the last few were designed to take a while, so you could focus on specific items. Testing with everything upgraded, INSANE mode, getting chain "Pop" bonuses for the first 20 or so waves, you can get almost 60,000, which should give almost 600 per game.

Does the shock tower do anything? Only ever seen it fire once on the lowest level and blowing on the screen was more effective at dealing any damage.

Yeah, it does more damage than any other turrets, but has a tiny range, every 2 seconds or so it'll target an enemy and hit a big area around them. You'll get lots of combo bonuses too, the catch is you need to keep enemies in 1 tile's range of them as much as possible, if you put some slows down around it, and try and make sure they have to walk around 3 of it's sides you'll do big damage. We're adding an effect next patch as it's VERY vague, I do agree!

To get it in perspective, a top end shot tower does 60 damage a shot, a shock tower does 150 and can hit tens of enemies at once. I don't think any other tower would be capable of doing 300 damage, to every single enemy coming out. There's a new achievement next patch for killing 10 at once actually, I think they're the best way to do it still ;)

Is there a reason behind the upgrade costs?
i.e basic gun costs 9 coins to upgrade once and then 38 a second time. Why 38?

The top upgrade costs are always around 4x the second level, for this though the damage is also drastically higher. I didn't want the game to focus TOO much on making a huge maze of level one turrets, like a lot of other tower defence games. There is much more focus on using the top end turrets to cause damage, then using cheap turrets to keep the enemies in range.

The game also needs menu improvement.
You complete a game and get a victory. Then you get the option to submit your high score. Would be nice if you could jump to the shop and / or start another game from here without having to use the back button on my Desire to go back to the relevent screens.

We've rearranged the menu a bit for the next patch, due to adding achievements + survival. This involved adding a "Game Modes" page before the "Level Select", which might end up making the chain even longer. We were planning on adding a quick menu to the menu button for jumping to screens, this might be a good option, as well as the "Play Again" option on the results page you mentioned.

Don't worry about submitting every score by the way. When you submit it'll simply submit the highest score you've ever had, so you won't lose anything doing it later.

Thanks for the feedback! Always keen to hear back from people, especially people who have played all the way to the top end of INSANE! :)

Feel free to mail me or post here anything else that's frustrating you though, we're still aiming for a patch every week or two. There's a huge list of features we've got lined up!

Never fear, it was just a bit of a social experiement for a few hours! I've swapped the name back. :)

We're sat waaay down the list unfortunately. If you search for "Tower Defense", I think we come in as number 20 odd, by changing it to "Aqua Tower Defense" we hit about number 6 or so. The Android market is tough on games that aren't in the top 100, you can't break into that without lots of downloads, you can't get lots of downloads without being in the top 100.

I'm just trying to find ways of getting noticed at the minute, we'll be doing a press kit this week though, which should help. Along with starting on 1.2 (or 1.1.1 quickly if any bugs come up).

I also wonder if we've put too much in the free version, we get feedback saying we want more in the free one. We partially add the shop to it, and instantly the sales of the full one drops, this is going to require some thinking :) More interesting bits for the full one I think.

thanks for the email re the update - but I can't find the game in the market anymore? I deleted my free version ready to buy the full one but can't find either now?

The coins work on both versions by the way. It's perfectly fine having both installed :) Hopefully it'll find the save backup and you won't have lost anything!

"Aqua Tower Defense" is a name it goes under now.

Looking better now. Made Level 94 on the survival wave so need to play around more with the shock towers etc as the shot cannon things aren't always hitting things fast enough.

Yeah, the shock towers have been redone completely, the way they hit has been changed quite heavily. The little red goldfish towers have double the tracking of normal shot towers, later on you might be well off swapping some cheap shot towers for them. The waves get faster and faster, so tracking gets far more important.

Edit:

I've just released a quick 1.1.1 patch. We had someone with a Wildfire having issues, I've downsized a lot of textures. Although the game is only 250k smaller in apk size, interally it'll eat up a lot less space when running. If anyone is playing on a Wilfire we'd be most greatful if you could say if this is working :) The changes are barely noticable, even on my Galaxy S so I wouldn't worry about losing clarity.

This update to this amazing game has made my day, the fishy animations are just awesome, cant understand why this isn't being massive 5 starred by every1. Best Tower Defense game since Robo Defense imho. 1 Very small issue i do have tho is that on the first stage(any possibly other beach stages) the bottom rows where you can place turrets are hard to upgrade without having to scroll the screen all the way to the left cuz the round turrent icons are blocking them. Other then that small gripe this is still one of my most played games, running on my g1 hella fast btw, cheers Red!!

Wow, quite possibly the best feedback I've heard yet! :)

I think, with the fishy subject matter, we're always going to have a hard time against futuristic games where you shoot robots with machine guns, but we're certainly going to give it a good try!

As I mentioned in the previous post, the main issue we have is getting people to download a crab based tower defence, when the market is full of robots, ninjas, zombies and other such appealing subject matters.

We want to work on the balance a bit more next, getting that long rewarding game that a lot have got right. I'll be developing on a variety of phones, including a G1 and I'm definitely aiming at keeping it feature complete on the G1 and other low end phones, although a higher res version is possible later.

We certainly won't be slowing down any time soon though, 5 big patches in the 19 days since we've released and quite a lot has changed already.

Yeah, the way they drop just over your finger can make this an issue, especially when fully zoomed out. I think we need a more solid border of trees and things around the levels. I think we could get some more clever patterns into the levels anyway, so they play differently. We have a slightly more healthy amount of features now, so improvements like this will be the next sort of thing on the list.

(really big) Thanks for the feedback!

We might do promotions occationally, to boost sales a bit. What sort of price do people think is reasonable just out of curiosity?

We're 20% cheaper than Robo Defense or less than half the price of Retro Defense already. I think the likes of Angry Birds has pushed the idea that games should be sub $1, which we'd be happy to do, if it would get even a tiny fraction of their sales :)

We may experiment with it one day, that's all I can promise ;)

The problem though mate is that my poor old little Hero has only 11mb space left so I have to delete stuff to download anything!

Still not had a chance to explore the update properly yet but looks promising :)

^^Root your phone already and install apps2sd lol i'm on a e-xtreme 1.3 eclair rom and it's still running crackhead fast ith over 100 apps and games combined. I'm on an ancient g1 myself with 87mb to start with(down to about 68mb now lol) I think the price the game is @ right now is fine, some games and apps are pretty ridiculous when i'm browsing, as addictive and polished this game is (and a hell of a great developer feedback were getting from redtoasty) it shouldn't need ever drop below the 2 dollar mark imo.

Also about the name change awhile back.. Why not just have the tag Aqua Tower Defense after the main games shrimpocalypse title? That way users searching for tower defense games will see your game much easier and know what kind of tower defense there trying out ;-)

Ahh I see, well if you've got an SD card it'll have made a backup save there. It should find that and let you keep your coins! The last version had a few bugs that could potentially have wiped saves, so we've tidied up the saving code a lot now. It should be quite hard to lose your save game (without selecting it in the options menu).

Apologies if we took your "fish-based" suggestion a bit too literally by the way. Somehow tridents and nets ended up being literal fishes, we played about with quite a few graphical styles and somehow this one stuck, fortunately no one has asked why the fishes have sided with people, and not the crabs ;)

There's a 30 character limit sadly, "Shrimpocalypse Tower Defense" fit, leaving us 1 character to somehow show it was a light version. It didn't make that much difference anyway though, we really need to get into the top 100, as I mentioned before, the games in the top 100 get downloaded more, which means they stay in the top 100, it's a tough cycle to break.

Check out recent reviews for things like Plox for example:

http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.chickenbrickstudios.plox

Sat high in the top 100, chain 1 star reviews, no updates for years, but undoubtably doing better than us! I think they need to rethink the market slightly. We'll be getting some reviews done this week or so anyway, which might boost us. More sales means we'll have more time to spend on it, more updates, more money for sound effects and art. I'm amazed things like Robo Defense can sell over 250,000 copies, release 3 updates in 18 months and be loved for it! ;)

That addictive gameplay curve is the next thing I want to sort out, he's definitely hit the nail with that!

I've been playing this a few days a day since I got it. Trying to beat my best level position in the survival game but can never get above 66-67 (Prawn Of The Dead). Usual thing where everything just continues at full speed through your defenses and you can't do a thing about it.

One thing that makes it challenging is the way crabs sit on top of one another. Rather than forming an orderly queue to die, you get 8 occupying the same space so when you see one about to exit the screen, it's game over instantly.

Why are some of the survival levels padlocked? Can only play two of them at present with the full game.

You can use this to your advantage, slowing towers hit an area, so keeping all slowed down should be easier. The new shock towers should be very powerful in survival later on. Someone is on 116 waves already somehow. The difficulty curve definitely needs tweaking though, it's basically Easy mode with the end cap removed. The speed definitely needs capping, by 116 it gets very silly!

Interesting, I've not seen this. I'll have a look into how this could happen, you're on 1.1.1 I take it? Definitely running the full version and not the Lite one? They use the same save games so it can be confusing.

There should be 3 locked levels even in the full version, which get unlocked in the shop, for 50 coins each.

Hello everyone, and thanks for the feedback!

We did struggle with the name - originally we were going to go with a more B-movie themed frontend, and the game was going to be called "They Came From The Sea" - which again was a bit too long. Which was a shame, as I did a front end picture - never quite finished it though, tempted to tidy it up and pop it in the Halloween version! :p

TCFTS_front_end_small-1.png

We briefly considered calling it something-defence, just because it seemed the norm and we wanted people to find it easily, but eventually decided on 'Shrimpocalypse' as it fit the overall tone of the game. We did go through a lot of sealife based puns though, most of which ended up as the level names.

I can't ever seem to get anywhere on his above a certain point :(

Presently playing the first map on insane and always get to around wave 44 before I lose. Nothing touches the enermies at that point. They move so fast that freeze towers (Level 7 upgraded + fully upgraded in the game) have zero effect (they hit the crabs etc yet don't slow down or if the do, hy're still moving at Mach 2!), and every weapon of similar level or above just causes no damage etc.
Same with the survival mode. Once I hit wave 90+, nearly everything seems to pass unscathed straight through the maze of weaponary I have.

Heh, we're looking at the balancing and difficulty curve for the survival and insane modes for the next update - some people are managing to get over level 100 in survival, but most seem to hit a wall around the 65-66 mark. I think a speed clamp is definitely in order! :p We're also looking into implementing mid-game saving and also making some fixes to the existing save system (some users have reported issues if you don't use an SD card/swap SD cards). Hopefully this update will be out in the next couple of weeks, cheers for your patience!

Hey, I'm really enjoying this game. Just one wee thing that I think should be changed.

I have got as far as beating the first map on hard, and around wave 110 on survival mode. What annoys me is that I can spend double the time playing survival mode but get half the coins compared to playing quick mode. Its just a minor thing, but it males me feel playing survival is a little pointless when it takes longer and the reward isn't as good.

As I say I love the game, it just annoys me after every survival game I play :p

I've noticed that too.

Still trying to finish off the insane level of the first map. Can reach around Level 55 before the usual situation where things move so fast they just don't get touched by anything. Usually get 220-280 coins for doing that.

Survival is more like a training level to be honest - gives you time to build up and test things.

Have come to the conclusion that shock towers are useless. Up to Level 8 in the shop and tried upgrading fully in the game and they just don't damage anything after a while.
Freeze towers seem to be effective against birds up to a point but in the higher levels, have zero or negligible slow down effect (even when you've say 30 of them everything just keeps on going at full speed).

Cheers for the feedback on that one, with the new changes, allowing people to get much further in Survival the balance is a bit out. I'll ramp up the coins awarded as you get higher. I think people are maxing the game out a bit as well, it might be time to introduce some more tower types and raise the top caps, what do people think?

A few other things on the possible list:

Adding an armory of some sort, so you can buy different tower types. Every time you play you get to only pick 5 towers to use, out of the pool.

Adding bigger maps, maybe a map type where they're trying to get to the middle of a much bigger square map. The engine is fine with the crabs spawning all over, and heading towards the middle rather than the right hand side.

The achievements need an overhaul, I think I'm going to reveal what they all require. Add a high score board for them, and add some more.

Lots to add still :) I'm still a bit disappointed by how slow downloads seem compared to generic tank games, there's a chance we could do another game using the same engine in the future. Higher res graphics, more realistic tower and enemy types, more special effects for top end phones. What do people think?

Thanks!

Toasty

Actually got to level 58 on Insane earlie before being totally over-run.

Freeze tower question.
Can a crab etc only be slowed once by these? By this I mean it gets hit and slows by say 5%. Any subsequent hits whilst it's slowed cause a slight bit of damage until it thaws out rather than slowing by a further 5% and so on.
