So..how long do you think it will take for our epics to get the sleek new Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) ??

Apparently they just released it or will be in a few days! right when we get 2.2 also..

there's no guarantee Galaxy S will get gingerbread, especially since the new flagship phone is rumored to launch in Feb with gingerbread.

That all said, it'd be insane for Galaxy S not to get Gingerbread since it's basically the same internals as the Nexus S,

what ive been wondering is if these developers can take the nexus gingerbread rom or just gingerbread itself and develop it for the epic. i think all the froyo leaks came from samsung, so im guessing a gingerbread rom would have to come from them also, which may never happen. i wouldve been happy if samsung skipped straight to 2.3 from 2.1, they were already working with it. why go through all the trouble with 2.2?

Yeah, we need some devs.. i'm sure it could happen.. just need someone to work on it.

It is very possible to port Gingerbread over from another phone, but it is a very big challenge for a programmer. You could always adapt it from the other phone, but you may have a lot of bugs and may not have all the same features.

i am thinking no ... phones seem like they have shorter lifecycles and i bet sprint is willing to guess most of this tech savvy are premier for new phone every year or willing to early upgrade on their own ...

i say..

it depends on the number and quality of dev on your phone.

I have a CDMA Hero...
it is way past its EOL by the manufacture, and the last official update was 2.1.

I am running 2.2. It runs awesome on custom ROM from aospMod!
better than it ever did before.
and a dev is currently working on 2.3 for it.

being that the new Nexus S is a Galaxy S flavor phone. I would think your chances of getting 2.3 is very high.
I would even bet you will get Honeycomb.. at least from a custom ROM.

What really bums me out are the official and unofficial talks about 2.3 heading over to the EVO before we have Froyo. I picked up an Epic because I wanted a top-tier Android phone that would be relevant for at least a year...I'm feeling a bit burned here. Who coulda predicted, though?

well.. i think a lot of people could have predicted this...

HTC devices have a great DEV community. Check out XDAdevelopers

Samsung has had a history of not getting updates out fast enough and then dropping the phone support.

I feel that a lot of the "whining" is justified. There are some major jumps from 2.1 to 2.2 that the Epic has missed out on. Yes, I can grab an unofficial version and put that on the phone, but I shouldn't have to resort to that.

I truly enjoy the Epic and all the goodness it does. Epic 2.1 is leaps and bounds over my old Windows phone. That doesn't mean I should just be content with not receiving 2.2. If they are planning on skipping straight to 2.3 then good for us! It would be nice if they eventually communicated that to the public.

I'm not saying it isn't justified, but it certainly exists. We won't be skipping straight to Gingerbread though since there is 2.2 leak floating around.

Seeing as the Nexus S is a Galaxy S device with very similar hardware to the Epic, I'm pretty confident that we will see Gingerbread relatively quickly. No way it will be by the end of the year, if that were the case they wouldn't be bothering with Froyo, maybe by spring is my guess. Also, since the Nexus S is a dev phone it will almost certainly be getting further updates as well (Honeycomb?) which means it's pretty likely that the Epic, and the other Galaxy S devices, will continue to see support for quite some time.

As for skipping Froyo and going strait to Gingerbread: it's not going to happen. There is no way we would already have three leaked beta builds of Froyo for the Epic if Samsung was planning on skipping Froyo.

Sprint did this with the Hero when they upgraded to 2.1. Everyone on the forums was (impatiently) waiting for 2.0. 2.1 came out shortly before the time they said 2.0 would be done, and everyone began moaning that the hero would never get 2.1 because there had been a 2.0 leak. Then low and behold when the update did come out it was 2.1. Now, I will note that it did take several extra months to get that update.

So far the similarities are shocking. I think they may take longer than the end of the year to put this update out. But when it does come out it may just have more than everyone is expecting.

Remember the good old days when the only cell phones available from Sprint were the Nokia ones with two colors (green and some sort of greenish black) and the only "app" was Snake? I shore do miss dem days.

That is interesting to know about the Hero. I have my doubts as well about skipping straight to 2.3, but who knows.

I understand common practice for a business is to not comment on speculation. However, it would be nice for Sprint or Samsung to throw us a bone besides the well worn "update coming soon" line. It took them days to mention anything about the "official" leak. You would think there would've been something on it either way soon after release.

For me, the issue is more about the difference between 2.1 and 2.2. The jump to gingerbread does not appear to be as drastic, so I really wouldn't mind waiting.

And yeah, I loved my old Nokia.

A simpler time when customizing your phone meant different faceplates, not backgrounds and icons.

Are they the newer kinder Samsung that threw the devs a bone with the kernel release, that realized they might not have such fantastic sales the 2nd time around after dragging their customers through the mud for so long? Will we be dumb enough to believe that and buy a Galaxy 2 series phone? Will the devs bring us a solid Gingerbread ROM long before an official one comes if it ever comes? And how long will we truly be satisfied on Froyo before jones'n for GB? Or will we just bide time now till some kick butt dual core slider comes our way and drop the Epic like a bad habit?

LOL Im guessing you will NEVER even see 2.2 let alone Gingerbread. I sure hope im wrong however.

I'm all for the snowball's chance. I really think that gingerbread is more for tablet and will take lots of work to bring it to the Epic. But we can hope

ummm...2.2 is officially here on Monday? The kernel has been released to devs. We'll probably have custom roms by Tuesday morning.

Honeycomb is the real tablet revision. Thought Gingerbread was more of a stop gap.
