Here's another (yes another) practical guide for those of you who are NOT rooted and updated to DK28 and want to go back to DI18. There are many out there with different download links, so I wanted to provide one that has the latest links that worked for me (as of 12/6/2010).

1. Get the USB drivers for the Epic here:

Samsung

Select "Software" in the bottom. The Description should say

"Device(Install),USB Driver (Software) (ver.1.0)"

2. Install the USB drivers on your system.

3. Download ODIN from here:

http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/noobnl/Odin3epic.rar

Extract the file. You will be using the Odin3+v1.61.exe

4. Download the TAR file from here:

http://firon.net/xda/SPH-D700-DG27-8Gb-REL.tar

It is VERY important to make sure you get the full file or else you will get errors and failures. My filesize I read on explorer for this tar is:

255,690 Kb
249 MB (261,826,560 bytes)

5. Start ODIN. (Open the Odin3+v1.61.exe file that you extracted earlier)

6. In ODIN, click on the "PDA" button. It will open up a prompt. Select the "SPH-D700-DG27-8Gb-REL.tar"
file that you downloaded earlier. It will automatically check the check box next to the "PDA" button after you select the file.

7. Uncheck the "F.Reset Time" check box

8. Turn off your phone. Unplug the battery and plug it back in. Hold down the "1" key on the keyboard and
keep holding it down while you power your phone on. It should eventually display the DOWNLOAD MODE with
the droid character as a construction worker.

9. Plug your phone in. Assuming the USB drivers installed successfully you will now see one of the "ID:COM"
fields turn yellow and have a COM # assigned to your phone. It will vary depending on which USB port you plug in.

10. Hit Start. It should take less than 3 minutes and you will have stock DG27 again.

NOW to update to DI18 do the following:
**credit to Andrew Ruffolo on Android Central for the following**

1. Download the following file and save it in your phones root directory (not any special folder) - which basically means when you use "USB storage" on your phone when it's plugged into your PC...drag the update.zip file into your phone where you see all the folders. Do NOT put it in any folder.

update.zip - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download

2. make sure its named update.zip and nothing else. if its named something else like update1.zip, change it to update.zip

3. turn phone off

4. Hold down camera, volume down and press power.

5. Use volume down to select SDCard: update.zip

6. Press Home on the capacitive buttons to select.

7. Phone should automatically install and reboot.

Since upgrading to 2.2 I can't connect my phone to my computer anymore...... is there any way around this?

Not sure exactly what you mean...do you mean:

1. Your phone doesn't pop up with the charge, Mass storage etc option?

2. Your computer doesn't recognize your phone (did you install the Samsung USB drivers?)

Can you please be more specific?

Since installing froyo the phone does not respond when I select mass storage and I am unable to access it through my laptop. And as I understand i need to install odin on my pc but it is useless if I can't connect the phone to the pc..

Id like to just do a full reset on the phone but I'm not sure how. If you could explain that I would really appreciate it :)

1. Ok first of all, did you install the USB drivers? That's all you need to worry about.

2. When you install ODIN and run it, it will TELL you that you are connected when the field turns yellow. See my instructions above.

3. Again, follow my instructions above. Install ODIN first. Install the USB drivers. Put the phone in download mode (NOT mass storage). Run ODIN. THEN connect the phone.

4. You should NOT be in mass storage to do this. Follow the instructions I originally posted step by step

Yes you can go straight to di18. You can go to any stock rom with Odin. Just make sure your di18 rom is around 250 Mb or so. I've flashed di18 quite a few times.
This might be a little easier: And working links to the files.

Lets make sure you have what you need first:
Go here to get the drivers 32bit:
Drag thru the entire link, right click on it, then open in new tab or page.
http://firon.net/xda/Samsung_Mobile_...00_Epic_4G.zip
Go here: Absolutely everything else you need is here or linked to .
Samsung Galaxy S/SPH-D700 - XDA-Developers
GetODIN here: http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/noobnl/Odin3+v1.61andepic.pit.zip extract that file someplace handy.
Get the full DI18 .tar here: http://www.multiupload.com/X9AB1U56JV
If you plan on updating to DK28 (2.2.1) again then you should get this too:
http://www.multiupload.com/C5YEZK3WF7

Follow the instructions in the second link above.
The instructions in that guide are really good other than not mentioning you don't need the pit step for DI18 or DK28
That and the only thing checked in ODIN is autoreboot.
You might want to roo once you have it installed.

THANK-YOU all here! I thought I had bricked my Epic after DK28! This page got me restored.

One other things - it might be that Norton Anti-Virus interferes with the process. I tried Odin etc for hours last night, to no avail. This morning tried the process above (WITHOUT "pit") and with NAV off, and it worked.

My epic failed the odin flash. Tried to reboot and now it has a logo with a phone 2 dots to an ! mark sign and 2 more dots to a computer. Its not turning on...

I really need help with this ASAP
Happened to me, too. (See my THANK-YOU note). I had to take the battery in and out and do the DOWNLOADING mode in exactly the order above (Odin FIRST) to get it to work.

I was about to call Sprint and go back to Pre while waiting for a new Epic to come. Fortunately, this worked!

Glad it worked.
You might want to retry DK28 using the ODIN method too. My installation has been very stable.

I'm back to a stock phone, but can't get DK28. I have downloaded it from two different sites at this link and keep getting MD5 hash errors in ODIN.

Trying hotfile.com now.

Bummer.
HUH? Whoops, I forgot there's a rapidshare d/l (I don't use that, just megaupload. There's only one button to click on then you should get a little window with a save button. I just downloaded it again just for shiz and grins with no problems. You must not be doing something right in ODIN. You must make sure the only thing checked in ODIN is autoreboot. When you connect, it should show some com port in yellow click on start and it should do it's job. If you can describe the exact things you are doing I might be able to detect what you're doing wrong. This process has worked perfectly for many folks. The file size in Explorer should be 295,941 KB. Rebooting your computer prior to starting ODIN often can help too. Connect a rebooted phone once you have started ODIN. You're not renaming the file by removing the .md5 are you?

I get this everytime:

<ID:0/004> Added!!
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> MD5 hash value is invalid
<OSM> SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 is invalid.
<OSM> End...

It worked perfectly for DI18, but now I'm stuck with the stock image. Since I know how to get back to DI18, I'm going to try DK28 with the update.zip file again. Redownloading diretly from multiupload again. I've tried 3 other of their mirrors and I get MD5 errors everytime.

I'm having a problem using Odin and flashing back to DI18. I've downloaded odin, the pit file, and the tar file from here. I am getting "Odin3 Communicator has stopped working" over and over again. What do I do? I've restarted the computer and the phone many times and I keep getting the same pop-up. Can anyone help? I've made sure I've followed all of the directions perfectly each time too from here.

EDIT: Nevermind, redownloaded the (same) tar file and it worked...
