Aldiko ebook reader Updated to 2.0

If by customizations you mean colors and fonts, yes they're gone. However you can set them up again - menu > settings > more > color > override default, now choose your colors. I was able to make the margins a more reasonable size, but it takes many seconds for the change to take affect - give it some time.

The new UI is more visually appealing, but it's possible that it's not as easy to work with. I haven't found a way to see the ratings on a book without actually opening the book. I use rating to indicate that I've read a book (the rating itself is not important, just that there is one) that way I know where I am in a series when I get back to it. I have several hundred books on my phone, having easy view to the ratings is important to me.

All in all I'm not wild about the changes, though I'll give the new version some time, maybe I can find more ways to 'fix' things as I play with it more.

It will support most epub books, and supposedly supports PDF formatted documents, but I haven't personally used one of those. If the book you have is not in epub format you can use Calibre on your PC to convert it, then save it to the SD card and import it into Aldiko.
It also has several sites built in where you can download public domain books.

Oh lord, half the customization features seem to be gone (or else I just can't find them, but I've looked), and the margins are humongous and can't be reduced beyond a certain point. I've just restored my old paid version from Titanium Backup.:(

Why must app devs constantly do that? Stop removing functionality! Even if it means it's not quite as shiny and pretty looking. Functionality is key. If you want to change something that majorly effects a function of the app, give it a toggle in the options.

I'm never sure why people have auto-updates turned on. More often than not the updates cause all sorts of problems. Very often the smaller incremental updates are just things like adding support for menus in Lithuanian which are of no use to 99% of users, but in doing so they screw everything else up in unforeseen ways! Perhaps there should be two auto-update options, one to update to the most recent stable version, and another for keen early adopters who are happy to struggle with semi-functional software in the name of innovation!

I don't ever have auto update on (Microsoft taught me that years ago!), but I do generally go for an update if the changes seem either interesting or 'harmless'.
While I appreciate the work they've done on this, I've decided I don't care for the end result. The fact that I can't see how I rated a book (and therefore can't tell if I've read it or not) is enough to make me ditch this version. It also annoys me that there are no settings at all under menu > settings. There is information there, but no settings that you can change.

For now I've gone back to the previous version, which I had a backup of. I've also downloaded the free version so that I can have a copy of that also. I presume at some point the free version will go to ver 2.0 also, but until then I've got a reader that works they way I think it should.
Also, I've downloaded Laputa and I'm playing with that now, just to see what it's like.

Indeed. I always turn off auto updates (I just wish there was like a master switch to disable it rather than having to go through each and every app) and keep multi-version backups.

With the most recent update Aldiko has semi-corrected one of the main problems I have with their 2.0 reader. In the book list now the ratings you give a book are once again shown - that's good because it helps me to keep up with which books I've read and which I haven't (I have several hundred books on my phone). However the rating only shows when you have the books listed alpha by title. If you go to the 'authors' tab and choose a specific author the ratings still do not show. That's a problem when (for instance) I want to read the next book in the Anita Blake series. I can't see the ratings, and I can't read the 'back of the book' to see what this particular story is about. So it's better, but it's still not right.
For now, I'm using Moon+ as my daily reader until the folks at Aldiko get some more of the functions I 'need' back in to Aldiko.
