In a nutshell...
Widgets are apps that displays and allows you to interact with on your homescreen. For example, the clock display on your homescreen is a widget that is running and displays it's information for you to see without having to open the app.

DenverRalphy explained it well. I like the widgets that allow you to see them main information you would want from the app (Twitter, Facebook, Weather, Sports Scores, News, etc..) or allow quick access to important features within an app like the power control to cut on and off the different wireless connections, flip through reward cards on Key Ring, access play pause etc on media players, and so on.
