Root Anybody *fix* the disappearing SMS messages via root?

My daughter's Incredible (which is a replacement Amoled unit) and the one before that have the "disappearing SMS" problem. Spontaneously her text messages disappear from the phone.

She backs them up, but the problem occurs repeatedly, and she doesn't always have an immediately current backup.

Has anyone been able to avoid this problem via rooting (and perhaps flashing another ROM)? (I can't convince her to let me root her Dinc, but this might).

How many txt's is she sending/receiving? Every time I hear about this problem they have thousands of txt's on their phone. Older phones either automatically dropped off the oldest txt's or forced you to erase them. Android doesn't do that, it will let you keep piling them up until something gets corrupted. ( a flaw IMO ).

Try running a txt purging app like "delete old messages" its free for the time based removal option.

I have a feeling she has hundreds (if not thousands), but she does back them up. I also imagine that the problem is like having an Outlook inbox with thousands upon thousands of emails. It starts to get hard to keep the records straight.

However, I do not that there is a "known issue" on Android (#5669) and it's been going on for over a year on multiple handsets. (See this link: Issue 5669 - android - Droid deleting all Messaging/SMS conversation threads at random or triple sending - Project Hosting on Google Code).

I don't understand why it's not a bigger deal. It seems to me that this is a larger problem than, say, for example, the iPhone's "death grip" issue.

But it also appears not to be something that rooting can cure.

Unless the back-up program also removes them it won't help.

The reason I don't think its a bigger deal is its pretty rare. not what you want to hear if your the one with the problem though :(

I think its exactly like the outlook issue, the number of messages in individual threads might be a issue also. you might only have 1k messages but if 990 are with one person and its trying to keep the thread straight...

I personally never have more than a dozen messages spread over a half dozen threads left on my Dinc. Naturally, I've never encountered the problem, pre or post-root.

I suspect she's got hundreds if not thousands.....

I know my Dinc acted erratically when I had more than 2,000 contacts, and it was especially wacky when I had unwittingly synched three different sets of my contacts (Google, Exchange and "Roadsync) such that every time I opened the phone up, it loaded 6,000+ contacts.

And we all know about the legendary "out of memory" message when the HTC email app is overloaded.
