Generally, here's how it is:
When you're at home and not roaming between access points, wifi will use less battery than a 3g connection. However, when you leave your house (or wherever you are) make sure to turn off wifi and go back to 3g...scanning for networks around does take up a bit of battery. This is through personal experience and a little research.
