Comparing MT4G and nexus S

I now have both (will be returning one of them), here are my observations:
  • Call quality better with nexus s
  • signal strength better with MT4G
  • wifi signal stronger with MT4G
  • Bluetooth stonger with nexus S, MT4G not far behind; both do better than iphone 4
  • I live in an HSPA+ area. MT4g can be twice as fast at times going by the speedtest numbers. however in real life use, I don't feel much faster during browsing (I don't watch much videos). I'm wondering what is the point of 4G anyway
  • MT4G has UMA (wifi calling). Nexus S does not.
  • Nexus S has SIP calling. MT4G does not.
  • Both has hotspot features that are free. T-mobile can decide to charge for the MT4G (Not charging for it yet)
  • hardware better with MT4G. Like the dedicated camera button and hardware buttons on front much better for use. Do not like the genius button though
  • S-Amoled screen is beautiful. However the screen on the MT4G is brighter under normal conditions
  • Both cameras are good.
  • MT4G has integrated video calling app which works good even on there H+/ 3G
  • Gingerbread: There's not enough in gingerbread that I would miss if I go for the MT4G. Maybe if they send an update in a few months with some extra features, I might then regret it.
  • HTC sense: Like the Mail app, Gallery app, news widget, other widgets, car home app. All of them are better than stock IMO

It's still a tough decision for me. I like both, what can you say.

i agree with a lot of what you are saying, but i don't think the competition
is even close at all. things the nexus is missing right off the bat, no l.e.d.
notification light, no removable memory, smaller battery, super plasticky
build quality. by using launcher pro and widget locker the mytouch 4g
becomes the ultimate super phone on the market as of today, and i honestly
believe for a year or maybe even 2 into the future. my belief is that the
"NEXUS" device should be the TOP of the line, the cutting edge and the
nexus s is NOT that, NOT BY A LONG SHOT. as for gingerbread, come on,
a few green color changes and a few tiny changes here and there, no way
enough to make a decision on that.
in my humble opinion, the mytouch 4g is a masterpiece, and the nexus s
is way behind it.

Agree with some of your points.
LED notificqation light - I use noLED app on nexus S which works fine
Battery - is actually bigger in Nexus s; battery life is a wash though
Removable memory - not very important to me
Plasticky built quality - nexus s feels light, plasticky and cheap. But it is smooth and feels so good in your hands when you hold it and when you use it to make phone calls feels nice on the side of your face.
I agree that Nexus S is not much of a step up from MT4G, EVO, Droid X or any other high end phones on the market (definitely step up from the aweful Touchwiz on Galaxy S series) but given what we have on the market right now, it is clearly at least top 5 and worthy of consideration.
The one feeling that pulls my back into this phone is the possibilty of getting honeycomb in March.

i'm sorta at the same crossroads you are right now. i dont have both phones, but i have to choose between them. there are two things where the nexus trumps the mt4g:

1) the faster updates. i am always jealous of nexus one users getting updates within weeks of an announcement.
2) the nfc chip. doesn't seem like much now, but since i wont be getting another phone for 2 years, who knows how useful that thing could become?

number one can be easily bypassed by rooting though. it's something i would like to avoid for as long as possible, but is most likely very inevitable.
number two is really up in the air. who knows, maybe nfc technology goes nowhere in the states.

which one did you end up going with?

i use wifi calling everyday in my house were i get 0 signal.. so wifi calling is a must have for me. the only reason really to get the nexus is to get the first updates but most are going to flash roms on the phone so you miss out on the updates anyway usually..lol! plus you lose 4g.. yeah the nexus is similiar in speed but im sure having the 4g will benefit as time goes on..plus im not sure since i havent messed with one but can the nexus even video call without 4g or does it need wifi? i know it cant use qik video like the mt4g so that is a minus also..

That NFC chip should be I think the only big positive with going to the Nexus S route. Otherwise, i'd stick to the MT4G. I have the MT4G and i cant see myself parting ways with it for a Nexus, i like the heavyness to it, and the LED light. The battery is my only real gripe with the phone. Aside from that i believe that MT4G will be the best phone in this quarter.

By the time Near Field Communication really starts to grow, there will probably be 50 more android phones out, and the update will be on "Strawberry Shortcake". haha

They are both great phones IMHO. It really just depends on what the user really wants. I came from a Nexus One and now own the Nexus S. I do miss the LED notification, but the NoLED app works just fine with me. As for 4G, the speeds aren't even going that fast yet. I can get up to 4 to 5Mbps down on my NS and have seen the same on the MT4G. As for battery life, I've been able to get a day and half out of my NS with just texting, WiFi on, regular Facebook updates every couple of hours and leaving Fring on in the background for Google and AIM chat. I also added Zagg's Invisible Shield to the entire phone so it's not as slippery and it's much more grippy now and perfect. I do like the physical buttons of the MT4G though, wish I had a dedicated camera button on my NS. And I agree on the NFC. We don't utilize it much here in the U.S. yet, so it will only be a factor in the upcoming years.

I have both and trying to decide too. The mt4 I got free. Paid 529+tax for the nexus. Although I could recover some of the cost by selling the mt4. I think the OMLED screen is the only thing I am obsessed with on the Nexus. I find myself turning it on many times just to look at the punchy screen. I agree the signal strength both 3G and wifi is better on the mt4 but it seems the call volume-quality is a bit better on the Nexus. I have over 2 more weeks for a full refund so I may wait and see if Google pushes an update to fix the wifi reception. Also the iPhone 4 is my primary phone. The android is just a second phone I play with as I get a free T-mobile account. I may just hold on the the mt4 until the Tegra phones come out.

Well, I switched from a Vibrant to a MT4G and couldn't be happier. The screen is the only thing that I miss.

Having played around with a demo Nexus S, other than the screen, I see no real advantage, hardware wise, over the MT4G (or the Vibrant for that matter). It boggles the mind that they ditched the SD card slot and no 4G support. It's like they cobbled together parts of all the Galaxy S phones to make the Nexus S.

Although the idea of vanilla android is quite appealing and speedier updates, having to deal with Samsung in any way shape or form was a deal killer for me. All you need to do is read the reviews, good phone, not great. Nothing that screams huge leap forward.

As far as the MT4G, love the feel and build quality of it. It's performance is MUCH snappier than my Vibrant (comparing stock to stock). And, until I had my Vibrant, I never realized how much I missed the LED notification. The noLED mod doesn't even come close.
