Speech Recognition Question

I have worked out how to search things in Google using speech, however when I first used the function it played me a video and the guy on the video was saying stuff similar to "Text Fred See you in 5 min" and it would text Fred, see you in 5 min. Similarly I distinctly remember him saying "Navigate to Googleheimer Museum" and Google maps loaded. He appeared to run these commands from the same bar, where is this magical bar or have Android/HTC done a Samsung on us and advertised features that don't exist like they did with my i8910HD?

Actually that's one of the biggest selling points for me, once it will come here to Canada.

Can people here confirm that the voice commands work as advertised?

Sometimes they work sometimes they dont, I think its get better the more you use it because it learns your voice but I dont use it enough

It learns using Google online resources and the only place where this is currently enabled in in the U.S.A.

For threads like this, it is perhaps crucial for people to state where they are based because what works is very tightly geographically controlled.

I've had mixed results with voice actions (english, slightly geordie accent).

You can long press the search button to initiate voice search rather than short pressing then choosing the microphone symbol!

I couldn't get them to work at first until I read that they only work when the speech recognition language is set to US English. I've had much better results since then. I'm not sure whether it's learning my speech style, or whether it's forcing me to speak more clearly but it seems to work better every time.

example:
Send a message TO Dave (short pause) I'm late, see you in 5 minutes.

Navigate to the nearest pizza hut.

etc.

Voice Actions

Note: "TO" emphasise this or you will have a message with no recipient but the text will be "to dave...."

Leave a short pause or you will have a message addressed to Dave but without any text.

The person you want to call or text must be in your Google address book rather than in your phone address book.

I've been playing about with " voice actions " for the past few days with very mixed results , it's more miss than hit with me . I really need some kind of voice recognition as it takes me 10 mins to type even one line in a text message . I don't think i'll ever get to grips with the touch screen qwerty keyboard , having big fingers is a right pain in the ass .

do you have to be connected to the internet in order to use this application?

(because some applications need to send the voice file to a remote server and send back the text.)

You know what? I don't know.

I've always had at least a GPRS connection when using it, mainly when using the Car Panel feature for navigation or replying to text or updating Facebook. For Facebook, its gonna have to have net connection but not sure about non-net applications.

All I can suggest is give it a try, but for me its such a nice all in one application, especially in the car its definitely worth a free download.

You do have to be connected to the internet, but unlike the inbuilt voice commands vlingo actually works. I tried for about 30min to send a text via speaking (in English UK) but the command on the video simply doesn't work which is a shame.

Hopefully there will be improvements to the voice commands in 2.3 when it eventually comes out .... and because I am on Orange that will be a looooong time if it ever does happen.
