So am I stuck with this piece of crap?

It may be. I have been using the back button since day one and my Eris works pretty much flawlessly.

To the OP:

Replace the phone, switch to the Moto Droid or go get the iPhone. In other words, quit complaining and do something about it. Once you figure out that the iPhone, Droid and every other phone made has their own particular set of problems or flaws then return that and get something else that will make you complain on a completely different forum.

LOL. So true so true.:D

iPhone is on Os 3.1.2 ....

The Eris is on 1.5 ...

Even with this severe gap/3 years of development, the Eris STILL can somewhat compete with an iPhone. What does that tell us? A bunch of Google Techs/HTC are able to put together just as good a product as Apple who have been perfecting the technology for 3 years, versus the one year/first version of "Android".

yes, iphone OSS is smooth. And it is much more accurate to compare the 3g to the Eris. I deal with iPhones on a daily basis and what I will say is this; I will bet you money that the Tech line at verizon is no where NEAR as long as the number of iPhone appointments I have to check in at the genius bar. One of the top 3 questions I'm asked every day is; "My iPhone isn't doing this..."

Not to be cliche, but it really is an iDont phone.

that was great and yes the verizon tech line is not long at all at the store near me. actually the only person i saw there was a person who needed contacts moved and another who had a beat to hell phone going why doesn't this work anymore. *snicker*

the people here who complain are the same people who won't pull the trigger of their threat to return thier phone. mark my words 6 months from now the same people are going to B&M and threaten a boycott which they'll never do either.

okay I knew some evangelists would be mad that I called the phone a piece of crap--it isn't. This is the type of discussion I wanted to provoke, so thank you to those who have responded to the thread. It's very difficult to sort through the information about this phone and try to figure out why I can't get it to behave the way I want it to. I realize the software is the real problem. I think the video processing is actually very good, I like the multi-touch, and I like the Sense. I'm sure one of my widgets or another is causing issues. I think I'm just frustrated that the Android is such a Wild West type of phone in that any app can do anything and we don't really know what is up. The iPhone has a lot of issues that I'm also aware of (not the least of which being price and crappy service.)

What I really want is the Nexus One, and I'm mad that Verizon isn't going to allow it on their network at least for a while. I think Android still needs to be sorted for a year or so to be on the level playing field with iPhone. Thanks for people who have experience with other phones for your input.

The eris basically is a nexus one just without the processessor. it is faster than an iphone or blackberry tour/bold/storm doing most tasks. I have had every kind of smartphone and LOVE my eris. Sure I would take a nexus one but the eris price tag is what sold me. The droid has 2.0 and faster processor and is slower than the eris.

Tip: Set your Scenes back to default HTC one and then get rid of the text and email widgets (right and left screens) and it will be really fast. also use the back button instead of the home button like lostsoul said.

All phones lag here and there. The eris is a great phone.

Oh REALLY??? You "verified it"??? Well guess what? You're
WRONG. The Eris has a decent deticated GPU. Please stop posting misinformation when you dont know what you are talking about.

Eris uses MSM7600A chipset.

Here are the specs of the dedicated GPU that it part of the MSM7600 chipset.

3D capabilities:
Blazing fast 3D graphics rivaling the best dedicated handheld gaming devices
• Advanced 2D/3D graphics support with up to 4 million 3D triangles per second, and 133 million 3D textured pixels per second fill rate
• Q3Dimension™ rendering engine with OpenGL

Ugh.
Go to the market, get a task killer, and kill all apps you don't need open. Freeing up memory makes your phone perform better.
No need to take it back to the store just because of that.. and definitely no need to call it a piece of crap.
This is correct. Since installing Advance Task Manager I have no more lag problems.

Well I have a task killer that I use regularly and...guess what...just as much lag as before. Sometimes the phone really isn't as good as it should be.

Take the Droid for instance. I loved my Droid. It did everything I wanted it to do - except make a darn phone call without making me sound like I was underwater. So, I went with the Eris. It does some of the things I want it to do except disconnect a phone call promptly and last more than 6 hours.

just for the record, i dont own a droid yet (hopefully i will soon) but the voice problem people some were experiencing was already fixed via firmware update. now why dont the eris get updates that are useful i dunno ;\

I think it's MORE sad that you get your rocks off on some sort of lame internet power trip. You already were rude about this exact same topic in another thread. Sounds like you got some sort of chip on your shoulder.

Furthermore, I did check the Qualcomm website and they do claim the chipset that is in the Eris has a dedicated GPU, I see no reason for them to be lying on their data sheet.

Second, there are numerous news sources that gave evidence to the contrary, which, in 99% of circumstances would be accurate. This time for whatever reason, maybe not.

Either way, it still makes you a child for just not politely bringing up the info you have.

Test Center review: HTC Droid Eris, the under-Droid | Mobilize - InfoWorld - States there's no dedicated GPU.

Should I Buy the Droid Eris by HTC or the Motorola Droid? - States no dedicated GPU in Eris.

Also, it's just my opinion on this, but if anything, it feels like comparing the Intel GMA4500MHD to a dedicated video card from NVidia or ATI. The reason I say that is because the Intel setup still technically has a chip that is dedicated to processing graphics, but it's integrated into the motherboard chipset.

The Eris may have a dedicated GPU that is part of the Qualcomm Chipset versus what seems to me that the Droid has the Texas Instruments CPU with the PowerVR (designed) GPU. The OMAP3430 Droid CPU could theoretically be paired with different GPUs, versus the MSM7600A is always going to have the same GPU because they are integrated with each other. As in cannot be seperated. Integrated being the opposite of dedicated.

And those are my THOUGHTS on why there may be this confusion on dedicated versus not with the Droid and Eris.

PS: Keep in mind, I actually like the Eris. I'm also curious as to what you meant by a "decent" GPU? What's your benchmark or source of information for that statement? Far as I can tell, there is almost no information on the graphics processing ability of the MSM7600 out there other than their published datasheet which suggested it can push 4 million triangles per second versus the Droid pushing supposedly 7 million/second. That's an extra 75% more triangles :)
SIGH.....

It all boils down to education.

1. The authors of the articles that you posted are NOT, I repeat NOT educated in technology. You have to understand the stupidity of "technology" authors. All they do is write and have no real knowledge in electrical/computer engineering nor can they even begin to comprehend the technology involved in chipsets let alone GPUs. This is proven when the author from the second article thinks that the GPU is what renders webpages when in reality its 100% CPU rendered. The first author displays the same stupidity. BOTH think that it is a BAD thing to have the GPU silicon as part of the chipset when in reality that is NOT true. It just shows more of their stupidity and lack of knowledge.

2. The authors are confused and think the Eris has NO hardware GPU at all when in reality thats not true. When it comes to phones there is NO difference if the GPU silicon is part of the chipset or a separate chip on the board. NO difference what so ever. The reason Moto Droid has a separate GPU from CPU is because it HAS TO due to the chips they used.

Qualcomms new snapdragon chipset has a GPU capable of 22m triangles/per second and ultra fast 2D acceleration which fully supports every API out there and blows away the "dedicated" powerV gpu in the Moto Droid by a factor of 3 times yet I can guarantee the stupidity of "technology" authors will pore out again when they claim that snapdragon based phones have no "dedicated" GPU and will display this as a negative.

3. If you STILL have to ask me why I think the Qualcomm GPU in the Eris is a decent GPU then it is VERY clear you do not even have a rudimentary understanding in GPUs and APIs. I have posted what the Qualcomm GPU accelerates and it fully supports all and EVERY lates API out there. Do you really think ANYONE that uses Android can take advantage of 4m/7m triangles per second? Well let me tell you NO. There are ZERO games out now that can utilize 4m triangles nor will there be in the near future. Further more nobody gives a hoot about triangles per second because nobody plays stupid 3D video games on phones.

Pwned.
