Root SD Card drivers not installing when rooting Nook Color

Hello guys.....

I have been trying unsuccessfully to root my Nook Color for over a week now. I used the directions from Nook Developers but my problem seems to be when I plug the Nook into my computer after writing to the sd card. I will plug in the Nook to my computer but either the computer does not recognize the Nook with sd card inserted or it says that the driver software was not successfully installed. I have tried using a 4gb and an 8gb sd micro card to no avail. After reformatting the sd card, it always tells me now that there is only 39 mb free of space even though there are no files on the card. I am at a loss. I have tried using WinImage, Win32DiskImager, autonooter and the manual nooter file. The files are visible on the card as per the screenshot but the Nook is not recognized and/or either does not boot at all or boots normally. How long should it take after plugging it into the computer until it reboots to the new animation screen? Sorry for all of the questions and for the jumping around. I am sure it is a simple fix, I am just not seeing it! Hopefully some of you seasoned techies can tell me what I am doing wrong. Could it be my firewall blocking it from recognizing the device?

Thanks in advance for any help and I hope you guys don't flame me for this post......I am usually tech savvy enough to figure this stuff out but I am stumped here!

Happy New Year!

Mindy

Make sure your micro SD card is a class 6 card as class 2's and 4's can cause odd issues. When you are rooting it will come up and say its found a device and make a bunch of connecting disconnecting noises...it never gave a pop up and said it successfully found anything but you could see a new device in the device manager...at that point its irrelevant to see it being recognized as youre only using the usb connection to basically turn the nook on without the power button so it can boot from the micro.

After a successful root...you can go ahead and plug your micro card into the nook after its booted..unmount it in the settings and format it on the nook...once your do that you will get your data back (not just the 39 its stuck at).

Fam,

Thank you for the advice. Where would it state that it is a class 6 card? I just bought two new ones, a 4gb and an 8gb but I did not see on the package what the class was. Also, it seems that after I install the sd card into the nook and reboot, it just reboots back to the original Nookcolor boot screen and it really does not look like it is rooted. I will try to use your instructions and see what happens. Thank you so much for your advice. I really appreciate it. I wish it were as easy as rooting my Droid :)

Have a great day!

These are the errors I get when trying to root:

Microsoft Virtual wifi miniport adapter has a driver problem

RNDIS ethernet gadget doesn't have a driver

Hardware changes might not have been detected

HELP!!! I about ready to pull my hair out. I am using a class 6 micro sd card and followed the instructions to the letter. I have tried searching online and troubleshooting driver issues in device manager to no avail.....I am about ready to give up trying to root this NookColor. Why is is so easy for everyone else? :(

Any advice? Thanks in advance.....

1.0.1.....I tried that way as well. I have tried every way that I can find on the net to do this and every time I have driver issues. Last night after posting this, I tried installing SDK and ADB drivers and files and when I went to install the drivers, it said that the specified folder did not hold compatible drivers yet I followed the instructions to the letter. This is the link I used: NookColor USB ADB - nookDevs. Everything went as expected until I plug in the Nook and tried to update the drivers. That is when I get this error. It has to be a driver glitch. I am running Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion laptop PC that is only 2 years old so the drivers should not be giving me issues.

Thanks for any help or advice you can give me. I really appreciate it. It just seems so simple for everyone and I am frustrated beyond belief at whatever glitch is causing my issue.

Have a great day and thanks again!

Thanks, I appreciate it but I think I am going to give up :(. I need to explain that depending on the root method that I am using, there are different issues. With win32imager.exe the files write to the sd card however, when I shut down the NC and insert the sd card, I plug the usb cable into the laptop and the computer will not recognize the device unless it is booted on. When booted on, it does nothing different than before. I have tried taking the sd card out, putting it back in, I am at a loss. With winimage, I cannot write to the disk because it does not show in the box to restore virtual image. I have searched online and nothing that people suggest is working for me. Thank you so much for your patience and help. If you think of anything else, I would appreciate it. Otherwise, it is just not meant to be for me :(. Sorry for any confusion.

BTW, I forgot to mention that when I try this process, the only way the NC will turn back on is if I plug it into the wall socket?!?!?!

just curious...assuming you downloaded the android sdk, did you run it so it grabbed all the updates which make ADB possible?

i ran into an issue where i couldnt root for days till i realized (and at the same time slapping my forehead) that while i had the anrdoid sdk put on my computer, i hadnt run it so it could install the updates which is what will make it go. on windows, it wont get adb command functionality until you do that.

as far as plugging it into the wall, the supplied cable and AC charger get charged at 2 amps, and its usually 1 amp like you see for most phones. Computer USB ports only do about 0.5amp, which is why it will charge EXTREMELY slow if plugged into a computer.

I, too, am having the same issue. I purchased a new 8GB (Class 6) Micro SD card. I have a USB/Adapter which I am using. I believe I can successfully image the Auto-Nooter 2 (From NookDevs, for post 1.0.1 updates) onto the card.

I power down the NC, insert the SD card, and connect it to my PC using the USB cable. I see the charging indicator blink a few times, but nothing shows up on my PC. At this point, the only way I can get my NC to power on is to remove the SD card, and perform a hard reset (power + 'N' button for 5 seconds). At that time, it reboots as if nothing happened.

I've tried this same process with the basic noot (0.2), the Auto Noot, and also the full (alpha) Froyo image.

Basically, it seems as if my NC will not boot from the SD card using the 'power-off, insert SD card, attach USB cable' process.

Any ideas?

@Fuseboxer: I am glad to see you got it working. Unfortunately, I still cannot get mine to root.

@Cabbie: Thanks for the suggestion, I went in and downloaded SDK again and installed/updated all files and still nada. It seems to be an sd versus nook issue because no matter which sd card I use (I have tried 3), once I plug in the Nook to the laptop, the laptop refuses to recognize the device as long as the sd card is in it. The Nook does not recognize the sd card even when it is unplugged from the pc unless I reformat the card without the autonooter image on it. This is beyond frustrating as it seems so simple to everyone else. Rooting my Droid was a piece of cake.....I do not know what else to do!
