Root Newbie Stuck trying to ROOT

Yeah I figured there might be some differences between the GSM and CDMA version of the Milestone. The thing is you and cinandro are in the same boat so it might be better if we get one of your phones working first. So I'm going to try and help you.

I think I found a work around. Try selecting Voice Dialier in your app drawer and say "Open APN" this should show Verizon and you should be able to edit it to the APN information given to you by Carolina West.

Or you could try downloading an app that let's you switch APN's. I'm really not sure if this would work or not.

Last resort, if none of these work we'll probably have to do some stuff through root access.

OK the voice dialer opened APN no problem, and I entered the values you suggested in your previous post, clicked the menu button and click save then the screen goes ack to saying verizon. I can click menu and click enter new apn and do the same but it doesnt seem to save it.

OK I have an UPDATE

I went down the list in APN, entering the settings you recommended and clicking save on each setting until I got to one that caused the APN to disappear and at that point the only option is "new apn" or reset to default which brings Verizon back up.

the setting that done this was the MNC.

You should try using the same Authentication Type and APN type as Verizon. So PAP or CHAP for the authentication type and leave the APN type blank. Of course I'm only assumming and you should be asking your provider for this information.

Those fields were blank on the verizon settings, however whenever i change the MNC field and click save is when the APN disappears.

Once I change the fields do I need to push these to the phone or are they there automatically?

Not yet, but im hoping lol. I saw on the other forum where you got the settings from and that guy is on the same carrier as me. I think he has all of the stock apn settings saved so I pm'ed him over there to see if he will give them to me.

If you have any other ideas, Im all ears, its not like it could get much worse lol

Ok another update, I found a user on my network with a milestone and copied his internal settings as well as the apn settings and still no DATA, the APN will not save even with the exact settings used on his working stock milestone.

I reflashed to the stock milestone build and its worse I have no text or data.

Did you even save? While in the APN menu you have to push your menu button and save.

And that "stock" sbf isn't for your provider either.

Yes I click save and when I do the APN disappears, it will stay until I change the mnc to the correct setting, when I change it then click save the APN goes bye bye.

I knew that wasnt the stock one but was hoping with a milestone build I could get it working, or at least my provider could reflash to stock, they couldnt even reflash it to there software while it had the droid rom in it.

Ok folks I reflashed a stock milestone rom and then my carrier was able to put there ROM back in and now all is well.

I have since rooted with Universal Androot and got rid of some bloatware and overclocked and its like a new phone, however I would still like to do a back up of my rom incase I ever do something crazy again, the problem is I cant use any of the methods Ive read on here. Open recovery will not flash the vulnerable recovery and therefore I cant appy update.zip, same with abrecovery, and i just tried ROM manager and that didnt work either, is there any other way to back up my rom ??

thanks JB
