Understanding the Verizon wireless coverage map

I seriously hate verizon's overcomplicated website, at least AT&T can keep it simpler. What is this Extended services, enhanced extended services, and extended broadband? At least on AT&T they keep it simple, Dark blue=3G UMTS, blue=EDGE, light blue= GPRS. I don't know about you but I am lost on this verizon map, I just want to know where I will get EVDO and 1xRTT so when I go out to the midwest which is notoriously known for where coverage starts to get spotty on all carriers, I don't give a flying **** about v-cast or any of there crap. Any help? Maybe a third party map you could reccomend that is accurate? Or am i the only one who is lost?

So from I have gathered: Extended Service is digital roaming on other cellular compaines cell towers, ie: Sprint/etc since they are CDMA. You are most likely only getting 1x coverage which is phone/sms/slow internet

Enhanced Extended is digital roaming on other cell towers able to give phone/sms/internet/bbm(if you have RIM) and get speeds close to/or at EV-DO

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks I appreciate it. On extended service do I even get data services? Also what type of charges do you get for domestic roaming?

When I driving thru Arkansas and got on the Extended Service, I couldn't get online, but was able to only do phone/SMS. I also didn't get charged for any roaming, just normal minutes usage. My antenna also displayed a smal 1x instead of 1X. The small x signifies roaming coverage. Same with ev-do instead of EV-DO, lower case is for roaming.

All of this was discovered on my Blackberry 8330, I would assume that Android phones act the same way.

Actually on android phones its just either "3G" or "1x". There doesn't seam to be a roaming indicator just an option to turn data roaming off. I wish I could force my phone to roam on sprint just to know what to look for just incase because in allot of areas in wisconsin verizon only has a 1900Mhz liscense so reception gets pretty shitty and I then have to deal with craptacular US Cellular (verizon needs to buy them for spectrum its lame). I would hate to either get charged a fortune or go without data having to just guess though.

Do you have an option in your Network settings to choose either HOME network or All Networks? Again, in my Blackberry, theres an options page that allows me to choose and it also displays if I'm in my Verizon Home Network or Roaming Enhanced Network. Also I believe Verizon allows you to call 611 or something and choose update roaming towers. Maybe you're getting bad reception because the tower list isn't up-to-date. I update my phone once a month and I notice a big difference in cell coverage.

Under my settings I get data roaming on/off and another option for roaming which is home only and automatic. It also displays what network I'm on and if I'm roaming but no way to scan for networks, I even go to advanced settings and the bestt I can do is choose 1xrtt, EVDO only and 1x and EVDO.
