Archos anti-root security is worse than htc's and moto's....combined

It's actually really easy to get root on the archos. I've already managed to get root using the rageagainstthecage exploit. The problem is there is no way to mount the root filesystem as read/write. Archos, unlike pretty much every other android manufacturer I've seen, has decided to use SquashFS and squash the root filesystem. For those that don't know SquashFS is a read-only compressed filesystem for embedded devices. On top of that the filesystem has some security added on top of it which makes unsquashing it hard.

Hopefully when 2.2 comes out they will have chosen a different method of mounting the root filesystem. Otherwise getting a meaningful root will be very hard. I doubt anyone is really working on rooting it right now because of this issue. Most are probably waiting to see what 2.2 brings.

Full root is available if you download and install the SDE from Archos and then install a writable version of the Archos android on an SD card partitioned properly.

UrukDroid 0.4.1 (Android) on ext4, full r/w access, su (root), SDE - xda-developers

I don't know that this is "full root" as most of us know it (but I could be wrong as I haven't spent too much time on XDA's forums reading up on it).

Doesn't this just basically "automate" the process where you are pressing the VOL+ button when powering on and then selecting "Developers Edition"?

I have a class 4 SD Card so I will not see a speed improvement...the 256MB app storage space has not yet become a problem for me (TiBu could solve that if it becomes a problem by moving apps to SD storage)...and I've read where a few people have reverted back to the "temp" way of doing things because of issues they have encountered. Just doesn't seem worth it to me.

If I have to boot my device up while holding a button and then make a single selection for Developer's Edition...I'm okay with that on this tablet until an easier method comes along. I'm probably just being lazy but it has worked perfectly for me.
