Droid Bionic? My next phone

I'm very curious about when it's going to drop and just how close to my upgrade time it will be. As it stands now, I have 2 phones eligible for upgrade on my plan, one of which will not upgrade any time soon, and the other...well who knows. Normally, I don't think it would be an issue to use the upgrade and just take the phone, but being as those two phones are "dumbphones", I'm not sure that'll work.

The qHD screen resolution is 540x960, the iPhone is 960x640 and they call it Retina so really its just a slightly larger than qHD. The Bionic beats the iPhone with HDMI out, you can simply buy a cable for $5, with Apple is $30-35 and its proprietary, Bionic you can place the internal/external storage on the desktop and move files around, Apple you HAVE to use iTunes which is a bloated app with constant updates that will hamper your phone if you don't. Bionic you can wipe and restore your data, apps just about anything with the App Store and Google contacts, calendar, email and corp sync. Apple you need a computer and cable connected to Jobs proprietary control center that decides if your phone is a $600 paperweight or now oh and don't forget Apple can nuke your phone remotely including specific apps if they so choose, Motorola doesn't (Google could but has only removed apps from the store and stated why, unlike Apple).

I owned an iPhone, I use a Macbook and I am a tech/gadget junky in pursuit of the best available (in my budget) today, Android meets those criteria.

iPhone's Retina display quality is more related to the pixel density rather than the resolution. Also, it's "HDMI" connection is still through an analog serial port, hence not actually and HDMI connection, just allows for connecting to HDMI devices.

Yankee: I have no idea what exactly you're trying to say, something about hoping it releases around your upgrade date, but then saying you have 2 eligible upgrades, then one not being available for a long time...I dunno. As far as release date, I would say best bet is in April.

Yeah, that was probably my giddiness taking over my normal brain functions. lol

I have 5 lines on my plan. I got my Droid first day, so I should be eligible for an upgrade for my line in July. But, as it stands now, I have two lines that are currently available for upgrades, both of which are your standard feature phones and not smartphones. One of those lines is my stepfather who has no intention on every having to learn how to use another phone.

I was wondering if it was possible to use his upgrade for my line. I know it's quite simple to change a phone on your line, but the only issue is his line not having data.

So I'm wondering if I can use his upgrade for my line when it comes out, if it happens to be early Q2 and I don't feel like waiting?

Got an answer to my question: yes, I can use his upgrade, and the NE2. So not only will I not have to wait for my Bionic, but I'll get a few bucks off, too. And I'll still have my upgrade in July, if someone needs a new phone on my plan.

I don't like that this thing doesn't have a gyroscope (lame) and that the Droid X had a locked bootloader. If this phone turns out to be like the X, I won't get it. I love to tweak my phone and locked bootloaders are the ultimate FU to the consumer.

I also hate that it has only 512 MB RAM, but whatever. I'll wait 60 days after this is released to see what people and the devs say about it.

Do you know anything about the droid X dev community. there isn't much we can't do to the DX or the D2

I've tried to follow a bit since its release. I am pretty sure that custom kernels haven't been released for the X as they have been for something like the Incredible. That's huge to me; I know root and custom ROMs are out there for the X.

If I am wrong about the kernels, please let me know, but I would definitely prefer to not have a locked bootloader to get in the way of dev activity. I know hardware-wise, the X is solid and I like the TI OMAP processor.

the X has 2.2 and 2.3 hasn't been released for anything yet, so you're not missing out there. We can overclock up to 1.4 at least stable. I would say atleast 5 or 6 really good roms out there coming about as close to aosp as you can get. We can change boot animations, boot logos, install custom fonts, themes reboot options. I don't see anything more one would want to do with their phone.

hahahahaha!! Like I said. nobody has a fully functioning gingerbread port. Hell even we have Obsidian but I didn't talk about it because it isn't FULLY FUNCTIONAL. The X and the incredible have the same type of display its just that the X is bigger and has a higher resolution. Unless you were lucky enough to get an amoled model that is a battery hog and completely useless in the sun. The incredible is OK but once you have that large screen, everything else seems cramped. Not to mention the X has a better and dedicated GPU which makes gaming much better. Now the Inc. does seem to take better pics in less than perfect lighting, but in optimal conditions, the Xs camera plus all its features(editing, scences, panoramic, multishot)... Its not really a choice to me. But hey thats whats great about android. you have the choice.

No not an inc fanboy. It's just that you are spouting untruths about screens and think that a locked bootloader is as good as a non locked phone. It's simply not true. I've said it on multiple posts, I am almost definitely getting a bionic locked bootloader or not. But to say it is just as good is simply not true. It stifles the true development for the phone.

i never thought it wasn't amicable! so let me get this straight. you believe that a locked bootloader is just as good as a non locked and that X has as much support as the inc? if so ok, to each is own. have you ever visited XDA forums and looked at the inc pages? anyway, have a good one. im always up for some back and forth, dont feel threatened!

and I'll put liberty rom and apex against anything for the incredible

Liberty is based off of another ROM (Gummyjar's) which is based off of...you guessed it, a Moto rom. It's basically a Blurless rom themed to look and function LIKE an AOSP, but is not an actual AOSP ROM, which disallows it to achieve true AOSP functionality. Sure, the X may get an AOSP ROM that works properly soon enough, except it ONLY took about 6 months and will always be 2.2, never 2.3. CM7 for the Inc is still in nightly form (RC0) and has all functions working and with a lot of those using it reporting no issues. I could go down a fairly large list of things devs can do to an htc Android that a locked up motorola will probably never see. It is a simple fact: phone with a locked bootloader is in no way greater than or equal to a phone that is without a lock.

If this phone will indeed have a lock, I will have to turn to the Thunderbolt, or even worse wait longer for HTC to release a dual core.
