Root Newb has 2.2 and tethering questions

First off, did a search and I couldnt find a straight forward answer.

I rooted my phone last night and got tethering going but of course its on 2.1. I use the gps, or try to, a lot and am wanting the benefits of that update with 2.2. My question is that if I go to 2.2 is there still the ability to tether or does it just start creating problems. If I upgrade to 2.2, the root and tether I use now, can I just reload those without a problem? Thanks in advance for the help.

And if anyone so chooses to really help, shoot me some links for the 2.2 update and a root/tether sideload that would work with it. Thanks!

The tethering in 2.2 based ROMs is pretty excellent. Just makes the phone a Wireless AP, a number of security options, handles concurrent access really well. The woman and I just used it for a week during Christmas vacation up at her folks and it was like being on a slow DSL connection. I even connected through some secure services for remote access and it was pretty solid, *plus* took a couple of phones calls without having to bump the Wifey off the connection :D

Yes, Wireless Tether is what I use even though I loaded Cognition 3.02, that has Wireless AP installed. It has a lot more options including MAC address filtering. I need MAC address filtering because I don't want to use WEP (since I connect to a VPN), but I still needed a way to restrict others from connecting to the hotspot.

I also have a question about tethering and creating a wireless hotspot with the captivate. I recently rooted and flashed my first ROM, cognition 3.02.

Normally, tethering and creating a wireless hotspot are features you would have to pay extra for to AT&T, correct? But with the cognition rom, we can essentially do this for free, using our 3g connections, not incurring any additional costs as long as we stay under our 2gb limit. Is this right?

Correct, no extra charge. Or if you go over you just pay the extra $10/GB. Luckily I had an iphone before and had the 5gb plan and that carried over to my new plan with the captivate.
