Help 3g often doesn't work

It seems to be hit or miss. It's especially annoying when I need to use Google Maps, and GPS is working great, but I can't search for an address because I have no connection (it just searches forever and returns no results). My wife's Evo works great and returns the results instantly at the same time and place. I don't see the 3G icon.

I sometimes get the 1x icon meaning I am not getting 3G signal. I am getting essentially 1G signal. Usually happens when I am in a commercial building or in the mall or something. Evo and Epic and all those phones that are 4G capable actually get their signal off of a different cell tower than us plain old 3G phones. (At least that is how it was explained to me from a sprint tech that I spoke with after being handed to about 5 spint techs of inceasing knowledge) Those towers are the ones that will eventually offer the 4G network. New more advanced towers means sprint had to pay for them which means sprint is passing along that cost to us in the way of the extra $10 Epic and EVO owners have to pay each month.
So that being said your wifes Evo is getting signal from a different tower even though both phones are side by side. That is why hers might be faster.

By the way, a Sprint store manager told me that Sprint will eventually discontinue the regular 3G-only phones and make all its phones 4G, and when that happens, there will be no extra 10 bucks.

Seriously a store manager deciding on Sprints future. Don't count on it. I remember Dan Hess saying that we wouldn't be charged for 4g, and we all know what happened later.
