Can you reccommend an sms app?

I really dislike the original messaging app. I want an app that has reminders, a custom vibrate, and an sms split, that ISN'T hancent sms. I used to use it until it randomly started deleting my all of my threads and sending txts to completely different people. I tried chompsms but I couldn't find reminders and I I'm currently using sms popup but that doesn't have the auto split sms. Any reccommendations??

Well the only other messaging app I have is the original one which can't be deleted. And idk how to check if anything else has control over sms. But it deleted all my threads yesterday and it messed up the names. Like I sent a message to someone but when I went to the threads it said I sent it to my mom. When I went to the original messaging app it didn't say mom, it said the real name. It also just completely sent my other message to someone completely different and had the pictures all messed up.

Chomp and Handcent are the only ones that I am aware of. I personally use Handcent, and I love it. I am not sure, though, if Chomp allows mms yet. If it does the I will definitely give it another shot.

Chomp does allow MMS now, both chomp and handcent just released an update, handcent totally messed up a few things and chomp totally fixed everything that was wrong and it's now the best by far

ChompSMS notification icons look like they're from 1990 and doesn't display enough options in the quick reply popup notification. It's a good effort but Handcent is still the best by far... no surprise there since I only use the best apps.

Cocksure much? Ever stop to ponder that other people have different needs? Maybe some people are not superficial and believe that function > form.

It doesn't seem like the native app or either Handcent or ChompSMS offer some basic functions though - can't archive messages/threads, can't search for contacts (have to scroll), can't selectively delete messages - it's each one or all, can't create folders. Am I missing something here? Symbian S60 had these like 4-5 years ago.
Well from a Handcent perspective:
  • * Archiving - Why would you want to? Is it just to tidy up the inbox? I came from a WinMo phone, and at first found the lack of archiving annoying, but there's no need for it with threaded conversations. Only thing I don't like is that you can't transfer messages to the SD card (I have nearly 2000 messages saved)
  • * Contacts Search - Agreed, definitely something Handcent need to implement
  • * Selective delete - You can in Handcent, just long-press on the message you want to delete, then 'Delete Message'
  • * Folders - Same as archiving, why would you want to with threaded conversations?

Yes, I need archiving to tidy up the inbox. By Selective deleting I mean using a check box to select messages, not deleting each one individually. Handcent's Batch mode delete is not really selective message deleting, it's selective thread deleting. There are only some message in most threads that I want to retain because they have some useful information, the rest I would like to delete.

Wow. Not to sound _too_ arrogant, but who are you to question why he or anyone else might want something?

I too would love to see archiving / folders / labels. For many reasons. None of which I'll share until someone explains why I have to.

Handcent: chomp: ARE YOU LISTENING??

That it is missing is ridiculous. Do we need to save 256K on our phones?

The built in msging app is bad. And I just removed Handcent. guess i'm going back to retry chomp. Handcent seemed to get confused between using 3g and wifi. Messages would stare at me after sending. when motiviated, i'd resend via gvoice or default msging app. no issues.

I must admit. Android / droid Inc. has me very underwhelmed so far. whoda thunk i'd have to give up features and reliability when going to a 'state of the art' phone and OS?

Any way to redirect sms coming in to my phone to gvoice (like vmail)?

Use SMS backup.

There also is something called Batch mode that allows you to delete messages in a thread selectively.
