Root No Bionic for me... and YOU?

The DX still has an encrypted bootloader. I don't want hacky workarounds, I want a legitimately unlocked bootloader.

DX has only been out what.. a year? I mean it may be getting older but there is still time for it to be completely unlocked. Look at the PS3 for instance, they just figured out ways to unlock those bad boys.

If they can't find a way to change out the kernel then one day they will be stuck. When going from 2.1 to 2.2 it required a change to the kernel. As it seems now 2.2 kernels will work on 2.3 but if beyond 2.3 requires kernel changes then it will be stuck. Now hopefully devs will have found a solution by then but until then I will not buy a phone with a locked bootloader.

again, droid x users will not be stuck. i get what you are saying. now let me clarify what i was trying to say.

when devs present newer versions we are presented with everything new from the base band to the kernal. .340 brought both new from .320 for an example. however what you cant do is swap out kernals without going to a new system version. and really there is no need. with apps like jrummy's droid overclock you get to choose your voltage and frequency thereby fine tuning the kernal to get the max battery life and performance for your particular device.

so yea, there has been a solution for months now:) but lets be honest, by the time motorola stops rolling out updates most will be ready for a new device anyway (especially if you are still using an eris). if the x isn't for you get something else. thats the beauty of android...choice. but fear of lack of forthcoming updates is kind of silly. the x is currently verizons top dog and will be popular and relevant for quite some time.

it has been out approximately six months lol but i get the point and agree:D it has been cracked. this is very new and the radio currently does not work but it is being addressed;)

That's because for the first three years, the PS3 had OtherOS. The people who could unlock the device were totally happy running Linux OFFICIALLY. Then Sony pulled a real douche move and pulled functionality that they sold the console with; this angered everyone that ran Linux (you do NOT screw with people that run Linux on a PS3!) and a year of hard work later (not 4 years of hard work later!), we have a workaround.

Well, the good news for those of you determined to hold out is the announcement of the Droid X2, Droid 3, and Droid Incredible 2. There seems to be enough outrage over this that Motorola will eventually do something about it. Obviously, it won't be done till after the Bionic is out. Not to mention that LG and Samsung announced new 4G Android phones for Verizon at CES.

While I'm as ticked as you guys are about the locked bootloader issue, I still think I may have to go the Bionic route. Digdug has done a good job explaining that while more difficult and with slightly less options, you can still achieve most of what you want done. You can still flash custom ROMs and themes, and you can tweak the kernel. I doubt they'll be a need to overclock, but you'll still be able to underclock with SetCPU. And if the DX isn't having issues changing Android versions, doubt the Bionic will, too.

there really isn't anything "hacky" at ths point. rom manager works for the dx as well as clockwork mod. it is about as easy to rom and theme the x and d2 as the original droid 1.

where the boot loader presents difficulties isn't to the user, its to the devs. but there are plenty of devs, roms, and themes with additional ones coming seemingly everyday.

hopefully this will apply to the bionic as well.

So are you basically saying that your flashing something like an sbf file that flashes all partitions?

Lol. I knew someone was gonna bring this up. :p I saw this today. It's impossible to keep up with the new technology.

lol Couldn't resist, mate.

I wasn't gonna bring it up if it wasn't something coming out till next year, but when they're ready to announce it in a month and put em out by the end of the year, I guess it bears mentioning.

Still, i don't think I plan on waiting. Sounds like the Bionic will be the best combination of what I want and need in a phone. But I might just do the one year plan. lol

Do we even need that? It's like buying a Core i7. An i5 will work just the same for virtually everything. Or are you encoding video on your phone? (I suppose it would make for better camcorder file optimization, actually, but I never use the camcorder, so go figure).

In fact, what's the big frickin deal about dual-core? Hummingbird runs pretty much everything perfectly, doesn't it?

Yup, I'm not sure if I'm gonna get this one but if I do...I'm definitely only signing up for a year.

News is coming out that the HTC Thundebolt will not only allow Simultaneous Data and Voice on 4G but will be the first to allow 3G Simultaneous Voice and Data. This think this makes it clear as to what phone I will be choosing. I have really enjoyed my D1 but that is a feature that I have been dying for.

Simultaneous Voice and Data over 3G Confirmed for HTC Thunderbolt | Android Phone Fans

I wonder why the iPhone did not get this? Is this Verizon or HTC technology? Can phones be flash upgraded with this ability?

Nevermind seems this is HTC technology as Verizon is telling its sales reps not to talk about it as it many not be completely reliable.

The must have new feature for me hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet. 1GB OF RAM! The only phone I've seen with it so far is the moto Atrix, but I won't break contract for it (well maybe). Hopefully Verizon will have something by this summer or else I may have to jump ship. All the other features are nice, i.e. dual core, 4"+ screen, unlocked bootloader, etc. But what always comes up when we compare our precious OC'd D1 to the current competition? That's right the RAM. So why lock myself into a new phone that only has double the ram when quadruple is right around the corner? Just like the D1 when it arrived with 256 RAM and 512 was out just a few months later. Plus any new phone coming out with that much RAM will most likely be spec'd with all those other features. While an unlocked bootloader seems doubtful right now, eventually it will be hacked, but you'll never be able to stick another 1/2 Gb of RAM in it.

I doubt that much RAM will do anything. Adding more RAM past a certain point does nothing; for example, in Windows XP and 7, adding anything past 1GB is useless unless you're running a memory-intensive application like Photoshop, CAD, or games. I've never gotten my memory footprint past 1GB without said applications. In the same way, anything past 512MB RAM on Android is probably overkill.
