VoIP/SIP on EVO

I currently use Sipdroid on the EVO 4g and it works out great... sometimes, there is an echo, but calls always go through. Currently, Sipdroid will create your PBX account w/ a host and setup the linking between the SIP client on the phone and the PBX. In this config, calls are routed using Google voice.

While it was previously a hassle to work with (touch pro flashed w/ android overlay running sipdroid w/ no service, just wifi) that is not the case now. I would highly recommend using it if you need a SIP client and want a plug and play solution.

PS. Sipdroid works just like the google voice call options where if my wifi is enabled (Sipdroid auto enabled on wifi startup), then when I place a call, i have the option of using my normal #, google voice via mobile network, or sipdroid (google voice via wifi).

Also, there seems to be an option to use 3g or edge to make the call, although if you have a network signal, why you would want to use a SIP client, I dont know.

Out of curiosity where is the option to use it over carrier connection?

I did test out VOIP today with instructions at VOIP for Android Devices via SIPdroid Android News, Android Phones, Android Tips, Google News, Tech News and More Thedroidguy.com mentioned at http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/238725-voip-sip-evo.html#post2066145 & it does work well over speakerphone (not without speakerphone) but don't like that pbxes.org has my gmail credentials so used a trial gmail account (can they be trusted with gmail credentials?).

I wish Skype (VOIP that works well whether it's on speakerphone or not) would not only offer video calls like they have with iOS since 12/30 but also no Android Wi-Fi restriction.

Will Verizon have some Skype function exclusivity, ETA for update on EVO?

Isn't there an app-way rooted&unrooted to make the phone think 3G is Wi-Fi so these apps would work outside Wi-Fi (for the 10% of the time I'm not in Wi-Fi)?

Still contemplating if I want to pay $1000 yr though when I'm in Wi-Fi 90% of the time (do have a couple days left in my return window to evaluate or try to renegotiate)..

I don't know if this is the same thing everyone is talking about but, I tried Line 2 using my iPad to Evo and vice-a-versa.

It seems to work first 30 days are free and then you have to pay a monthly fee, I don't represent the company at all.

The extra money Sprint would charge me on a new line and the Family plan versus the $10 a month.

Yeah sometimes I'm a cheap a@@.

Line2 app states:

"we can't guarantee performance quality on non-certified phones. Additional devices will be certified in the future.

Known Issues:

* Voice quality is a known issue on HTC EVO 4G (Sprint) phones."

Although their "Line2 with Unlimited Calling and SMS Texting Now Available on Android OS" site page demos on an EVO:

Let's see how Google decides to evolve GV.

Skype's revenue model is very user friendly as well. Yesterday I set up Skype on siblings' iPhones, iPads, Macs, pcs with test video calls & it really worked great, hope Skype brings video calling to Android over Wi-Fi & 3G/4G asap as so many more of my contacts already have Skype accounts & mobile to pc exchanges were impressive.:D:)

VoIP is hpw Verizon is going ot solve the talk / surf at the same time problem with their new LTE network. They call it VoLTE but same difference.

Sprint could do the same if they could get 4G widespread and not annihilating your battery :).

It's not necessary for Sprint since Wimax and 3G radios are separate and can run at the same time now. Sprint's issue is not enough Wimax coverage.

True enough but with both radios running you'll mow battery like no tomorrow. With LTE it's transparent.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not jumping ship for Verizon's 4G unless I can get an EXTREME discount on their service. I'm with Sprint for the value.

so, back to my original question

which VOIP service is the best if i bring my phone to Europe? do they all work the same?

I have the same question. I'll be doing some travel to Europe & Asia for work and if there's any way possible I'd like to use my phone instead of rentals.

Also, one thing I am not getting is once all this is set up on my phone and working properly, if someone wants to call me do they call my regular number or another number? And, if I call them do they see my number or the other number?

I've just learned that some places in Asia are on CDMA so now it seems I'm the only person on my team whose phone WILL work on our next 2 international trips!! w00t!!
