Dickson, TN.
I was playing around with 2.2.1 today and was just curious about the new "3G Mobile Hotspot option". Just so I'd know I called Verizon support and told them I just had received the update pushed OTA and was wondering how much it would cost a month if I wanted to use it. The rep. told me that Ally would not support that option. So I asked if she was sure and why was it included in the update? she put me on hold to ask someone else and said she was correct that Ally would not support that option. Just wondering if anyone can confirm this or not?
I had no intention of getting it as I have other free options but was just curious.
*Both Verizon reps I talked to were wrong it seems, but it will cost you $20.00 for 2GB a month to use it.*

That is stupid. Probably just wanted to add more bloatware. Idk just saying from the past updates most likely.

##LGSERVICEMENU enter 000000 as service code. choose data, click the DUN MIP NAI option (the only one listed) you will see a box come up with XXXXXXXXXX@dun.vzw3g.com change it to XXXXXXXXXX@vzw3g.com then hit ok and press home and you now have a free 3g mobile hotspot. BUT you have to do this after every reboot if you want to use it free it doesnt stick on a reboot sadly

I agree, it's stupid to include unsupported features if indeed that is the case, it also kind of ticked me off that the included facebook and My Verizon Mobile app required additional updates right out of the box taking away even more valuable memory.

Thanx using it now will check vzw to see if im being charged and let everyone know

Funny as two Verizon reps swore up and down Froyo wouldn't support 3G Mobile Hotspot on Ally, they said it is only available their "high end Droids". go figure, LOL;) I didn't want to tinker with it before talking to Verizon because I didn't want a $30.00 or so tethering charge showing up on my bill.

Maybe a dumb question, but where do I enter ##LGSERVICEMENU to access the menu? I tried just typing and it does a google search. What am I doing wrong?

When I do the first two steps, it comes up with a lot of other things, such as:

All Auto Test -LG
ELT Test
Field Tests -LG
Data -LG
etc...

Any help?

Any more info on this? I tried it today with my ARCHOS 101 tablet. It connected to my Ally with no problems at all. I opened my web browser on my tablet and it went straight to the Verizon page requesting my to pay an additional $20 a month to tether.
Has anyone found a work around for this? The tethering feature would be awesome if I could get it to work for free. Any new info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks !!!!

Are you rooted? If so, just download Wireless Tether from the market :) works flawlessly!

Its funny that they try to sell you products they have no idea how they work. As far as I know the 3g mobile hotspot app is more verizon bloatware. Yes. It may work just fine but u pay a lot for it and its highly restricted with full dl caps in place. Like someone here already said just stick with rooting and using wifi tether or barnacle from the marketplace if you gotta have it

Wireless Tether only supports ad-hoc on the Ally (at least that I am aware of) and Android tablets (the Archos) cannot connect to ad-hoc networks. Let me know if I am missing something because I have been looking for a solution on this outside of the very manual wpa_supplicant approach.

My ARCHOS 101 connected to my Ally 3G hot spot with no problems at all. I was just trying to find a way to get it to work without having to pay the extra $20 a month for tethering. Everything everyone has suggested still leads me to the Verizon provisioning page requesting to sign up for tethering services. It not a huge deal but would have been nice to use with my tablet since I'm already paying for the unlimited data package.

I think the main thing here is if one were to "find a way to get it to work without having to pay the extra $20 a month for tethering." it would be pretty much a no no to discuss on this board.
