Root SMS Data and Switching ROM's

I am trying different ROM's and have everything backed up with Bootstrap Recovery and Titanium. I restore my apps with Titanium, but when I go to use HandCent for text messaging I am not seeing my old text messages. So, where are they stored?

Question number 2: I have installed Apex 1.3.1 and Darkslide 4.2 and I am getting ready to test drive Liberty 1.0. I have made backups of Apex 1.3.1 and Darkslide 4.2 and if I want to go back to one of those is all I need to do is just wipe and then restore than backup?

Well, what I meant, is when you do a Reboot Recovery and get the ClockworkMod Recovery screen, do I need to do a 'wipe data/factory reset' before I do the 'backup and restore' and restore my image backup (my nandroid file)? Or just restore the image and let it overwrite everything?

I just have not switched between ROM's yet, but I've got all my backups made and after I install Liberty 1.0 and get everything installed and get my backup made of it, I plan on switching between them some.

i'm not sure i understand what you are doing...
it sounds like you are going to make backups after you install the roms so you can switch between them and just restore.
since you are wiping data/cache between roms (you should be doing this unless the roms are the same architecture like liberty and gummyjar) your sms messages will get dumped in the data wipe.
imo your only option would be another app like b3nder recommends that backs up sms.

to answer this- Well, what I meant, is when you do a Reboot Recovery and get the ClockworkMod Recovery screen, do I need to do a 'wipe data/factory reset' before I do the 'backup and restore' and restore my image backup (my nandroid file)? Or just restore the image and let it overwrite everything?

be careful restoring data, you can brick your phone.
by this i mean, make sure the data you are restoring is from the same rom you just loaded. you don't want to restore apex data to liberty's rom, this won't work.

if you want to switch between roms, i'd backup apex, rename the nandroid file so you know its apex data, then go wipe data/cache, install liberty, set it up (you shouldn't restore any nandroids at this point), restore your apps thru tibu, then make a nandroid backup of liberty. this in theory should allow you to switch back and forth between the backups. however, you may have to go back to stock in between roms, someone else will have to answer that part for you.

i always use an awesome app called SMS backup & restore by -Ritesh Sahu -- it does a great job and does it quick.. however, the droid x has a glitch where the date/time doesn't get stored right in backups i think... really haven't flashed a new rom in a while so not sure if thats fixed or not.

+1

I just delete previous back ups. I never keep more that two back ups at a time.

This is exactly what I was wanting to do. Get each ROM installed and completely setup with all my apps installed and then create a nandroid image using Bootstrap Recovery. Then if I am currently using say Apex and want to switch to DarkSlide, then that is where I wanted to make sure I needed to do a complete wipe before restoring the DarkSlide backup or image. And yes, I then use Titanium to restore my apps with.

I am asking, because I want to know if I can do it this way. I don't want to screw anything up.

So, can I do it like I listed above or do I have to completely wipe the phone and then install a different ROM with the installation instructions for that ROM? I assumed once you got a ROM installed and got all your apps installed your could just make an image (or backup with Boostrap) and then just wipe it and restore a different ROM.

Thanks for the information everyone. I have Apex and DarkSlide backup images and I was going to install Liberty and make a backup of it as well so I could change between the three of them when I wanted to. But after reading all the problems people are having with Liberty...i.e. reboots when using their phone and the like, I think I will just stick with Apex and DarkSlide for now.

I'm not sure what to say to the bugs some people have found in Liberty. My phone is really working flawlessly even when oc'ed to 1.35 GHz ULV. Maybe some people got a bad install or I dunno. If you don't try 1.0 I would at least give 1.5 a try when it lands.

Since I have made recovery backups of Apex 1.3.1 and DarkSlide 4.2, thinking about trying Liberty 1.0 tomorrow and see what it does. If I don't like it, then I can easily just restore one of those two.
