What is the one must have, killer app to show off Droid

how do i get the nav to stay in street view? I thought I could only get it to do street view when showing the destination. I haven't played with it much as my wife always forces me to drive ;-). I don't want to tinker too much while actually driving.

John

I don't think you can stay in street view while navigating, it does only show you the destination when you get there. But to use street view do the following:

Search the location on the maps and zoom in until you see the address pop up in a bubble. Now tap the address bubble and a menu comes up with street view as an option. But you may have already known that.

PhonemyPC is another app that makes people go "HOLY SHIT". I love screwing with my wife with that one....

I also agree with google maps, skymap is too cool for words, policestreetscanner is awsome, gps status and of course the lightsaber and starwars sound app.

GPS Status is really cool, yeah. I need to get on their website and figure out what everything means, though...

PhoneMyPC amazes people. I use it to access my home PC, and also to easily monitor what my children are doing on their PC. They know I have it - I even showed them how it works.

Barcode Scanner also amazes people. Story: I was in a store the other day and saw a new camcorder I hadn't seen before - but in the form factor I'm looking for. I scanned the barcode, pulled up a Google search and clicked on a digital camera forum where there was a review of this camera. They said it is lousy, so I didn't buy it. All in less than 2 minutes. That is COOL and really useful.

I think Google Sky is also amazing, but it's more of a toy and I want to show off the useful "tools" that make my life easier and work more productive.

I used shopsavy in staples yesterday to see if the price on a wired headset was too high. It was. Orderd a similar set on ebay for $6 instead of $30 in staples. I'm willing to pay a little extra to have it in hand, but not that much extra...

Gmote 2.0 just became the must show app for anyone that comes over my house :D

Gmote 2.0 without a doubt. Connect your PC to a huge HD screen and sit back on your couch with Gmote if you want that "HEEEEELLLLLL NAAAWWWW" effect!

OR

Get the LukLuk media player and stream some full length HQ movies! (Great Movies! No bad titles!)

Then tell them both apps are free of charge!

I'm kind of confused about this HQ Youtube people are raving about. Can someone explain? I know its High Quality videos but is it only availbale in certain options? How do you access the HQ?

First off I don't think all videos have a HQ option. One I know that does is the trailer for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Fire that video up. It will start in low res. The under the app menu there is an option for HQ. Select that and be prepared to be impressed. Looks better than many laptop screens I've seen.

i need to look into instamapper more- but I'm pretty sure the built in google maps with latitude does exactly that without having to install any 3rd party software.

Latitude is REALLY slow with location updates. My wife travels all over town doing her job, and if I want to meet her for lunch I'll pull out R2 (my Droid) and check the map to see where she is. "Last update 3 hours ago" Argh. Please update location. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. it's almost always off by an hour. Even with her GPS on, her location can be wildly off from where she actually is.

So far, I think the Latitude layer is not ready for prime-time.

Dolphin ftw. Excellent browser, nice and fast, multi-tabs.

But of course, wait until January when Flash 10 is released for the Droid, then show them that feature. Can your iPhone do flash? Oh yeah, it could, if Apple weren't a bunch of trendy morons.

Up until last night I would also give Dolphin a big thumbs up. The new version with ads obstructing the center of the browser for me is a deal breaker  I would gladly pay for an ad free version as it is one great browser. I also can't wait for Flash 10 :D

You all have mentioned some great apps to show off the Droid but allow me to add a few more that I have found.

The number one app that gets people hyped when I show them my phone is: "Andwobble" (guys will love this app) You take a picture of say a busty woman for example. Andwobble lets you place little markers wherever you want on the screen. You can resize the markers if you want then press Preview. Then shake your phone and it looks like the person's chest or whatever you have those markers on, it will make them bounce or shake around! LOL! Very funny and yet cool app!

"LOOKOUT" is another app that scans your phone for viruses, and backs your data and contacts up to their website. It can also find your phone if its lost as well.

"Ringdroid" - allows you to take songs on your SD card and edit them down to be used as ringtones or notification sounds. I got one that says Deeez Nutzzz everytime my boy calls me! LOL!

"Traffic Cams" (has the icon of a stop light) - provides Live video of traffic cameras along various highways! Perfect if you do a lot of highway driving! Other traffic cam apps gives you a still picture but Traffic Cams gives you a live video feed of traffic conditions right on your phone.

"Where's my Droid" - this app is cool if you like to turn your ringers off but leave the phone on. Say you misplace your phone. You can't call the phone to find it because you turned the ringers off. Well with "Where's My Droid" it can send a signal to the phone that overrides the phones settings and will make it ring so you can find it!!!

Just an FYI, but if you text "wheres my droid gps" it will give you the GPS location of your phone (via a text message). This is helpful if your phone is lost or stolen..(Of course your phone and GPS both have to be on)...

Seriously, this thread rules. Thanks for the "Talk to Me" suggestion.

Also, I'm not sure anyone mentioned "Google Goggles". That definitely has a big "wow" factor. Try taking a picture of a dvd case. Instant link to imdb. I love it.

Also, to impress people, maybe show them Home++ and the Default Home, to show how much customization you can have over it.

Electrum Drum II is also really amazing if you or any of your friends are musically inclined. It's an amazingly full featured drum sequencer. The newest update even let's you record your own samples with the microphone. A bit of a learning curve, but once you get into it, it's one of the most full featured and complex apps I've seen on Android.
