Root from 2.1 w/root to 2.2 w/root

ok so im still a noob so give me a break, but cant i just "un-root" my ally then factory reset it then dial *#*#CHECKIN*#*# and update until i get FroYo then root w/ Tridents directions?

You don't need to unroot or do any of that stuff before following Trident's guide. His guide includes taking the phone back to the original Ally stock firmware (v6) - that's what you're doing when you're using the LG Updater program starting in step 12.

Simply follow his guide. I started his steps from a rooted 2.1 phone running the Punisher ROM - it worked fine.

Untrue about if you removed pre-installed apps, I had most junkware removed but still running stock VCS740VZC and it updated to Froyo with no problem.

You have to be mistaken man, in the Froyo VS740ZVD Update there are patch files for every app present in Stock Eclair VS740ZVC, and if any of those are missing, the install will fail.

The biggest reason for the Froyo Guide is to return what is called Fastboot, an android bootloader that is used to interact with the underlying hardware of the Ally, even if stuck in a bootloop, even if the Ally is bricked. Its what makes the Ally virtually unbrickable, and so sturdy. It has been used to save thousands of Allys from certain doom, and is a priceless utility you want to have.

I had removed (deleated) Thinkfree office, Cityid, Lg Social, Myspace, both Amazon apps, and vzwbackup, and Froyo upgraded OTA for me. I can only speak from my experience with my ally. I had them removed in ZVC, and it OTA updated to VZD, I removed them again after I rooted VCD and it OTA upgraded to froyo. Again, just my personal experance.
Of course if anyone can't get the update they can try LGMU which will wipe fastboot (and maybe the ability to load custom ROM's in the future) or use

or what ever other method you choose to get back to a point you can get the OTA.
