Going to the Atrix 4g training 2/2/2011!!

LTE phones I really don't think will be out till the end of the year. ATT is launching their network some time this summer, then they have to test it with data cards (like Verizon did), that leaves about 3-4 months till they'll release LTE phones. I don't see LTE phones on ATT till November, December time frame. What do you guys think?

Hi Marc,

If in case you get the honor of handling the beast :) Please let us know about

1. Build Quality
2. Call Quality (concerned cos of ATT &iphone fiasco)
3. Battery life (i know this one is hard)

Knowing that it's HSPA+ and not LTE is a lot to think about. When I upgrade I do want the LTE technology. I really don't want to get a great phone only to have it not be the true 4G tech.

What phones will/do have the LTE tech onboard then? If I'm going to jump, I want to jump all the way not half.

LTE is not true 4g either. The 4G standard calls for 100mbps on the mobile network, which neither HSPA+, LTE, nor wimax are capable of.

It would be safer to call HSPA+ and wimax 3.5G, and LTE 3.75G.

Then what is the true 4G technology called? I'm just curious. All these acronyms are giving me a headache. I have enough trouble keeping up with the ones I need to know for my job.

Quoting that horrible image, ask them the following:

How are they claiming to be the fastest network when Verizon's LTE network is documented faster? Do facts not matter?

How are they claiming 4g speeds when they don't meet the 4g standards? Or are they rolling out mobile 100mbps connections next week?

How are they claiming 4g anything?

How are they claiming to be the only layered technology? T-Mobile has 'committed' with the same viggor as AT&T to having both HSPA+ and LTE.

Consistent speed, when leaving LTE - two things, where's the LTE? and why can't I get more than 900kbps right now over CDMA in the middle of downtown Dallas (or anywhere)?

Android leader? Verizon has 20 current Android phones. AT&T has 7. How is that a leader? Even if AT&T adds 12, that still puts them at 19 Android phones. And even if Verizon adds 0, they still win. But we know they are adding at least 4.

Lastly ask them how the marketing department passed business ethics in college.

Sorry to burst your bubble dude, but HSPA+ IS faster than first tier LTE that verizon is deploying (21mbps vs. 12-15mbps)

HSPA+ IS now considered a 4g technology by the ITU

T-Mobile does NOT have a build out upcoming for LTE anytime soon. (2013-2014)

When AT&T does start offering LTE 2H 2011, the combo of LTE and HSPA+ will be faster than Verizon's combo of LTE and EVDO rev 2.

I have no qualms with what you said about AT&T being an Android leader though, they are by far the worst today (hopefully that's set to change this year)

Well technically it says they've committed to an industry leading Android portfolio. It doesn't say "hey we're the best Android carrier right now."

Yep, you're absolutely right. We'll find out in a week and a half whether they keep up with their "crippling" policies or have a better approach. I'm putting my money on them locking out side-loading and all sorts of other things as usual though. It's so frustrating that I have to root a phone to gain standard features... (keeping my fingers crossed, but my hopes firmly grounded)

Well, HSPA+ isn't here, so you are quoting what they say it will be. LTE is *testing* at 30mbps in San Fran, Dallas, and New York (it's here, and it's moving). However that's not on a loaded network so Verizon is saying it'll settle at 12-15mbps. And AT&T claims their 3g connection is currently the fastest 3g, but I have 3 phones, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. Depending on where I am Sprint and Verizon duel as the fastest. AT&T is either the slowest, or un-usable.

HSPA+ is not 4g technology according to the ITU. The ITU defines 4g as 100mbps mobile connections or 1gbps stationary. They allow you to call your network 4g no-matter the underlying technology (CDMA, HSPA+, WiMax, LTE, etc). But for it to really be 4g, it needs to meet the requirements (they didn't change or alter the speed requirements). So far only a small deployment of real 4g has been done in Denmark. Nobody else has 4g. ALL the carriers in the U.S. are liars right now.

T-Mobile and AT&T are both claiming to have LTE, neither does. Doesn't matter to me if it's planned for 6mo from now or 12y from now. They are both fantasizing.

Again, talking about future things that don't exist with such certainty is amusing. Cause theoretically AT&T's 3g should be faster than my Sprint 3g, or my Verizon 3g...but in all actuality, I've never seen AT&T better than Sprint or Verizon (in Dallas).

Can you find out the quality of the front facing camera?
Will at&t allow video chat with iphone4 users? or would we have to use a 3rd party app(im assuming the latter is the answer)

also when the phone is on the laptop dock, and you get a incoming call will you be able to answer the phone while it is still in the dock or would you have to disconnect it?

Thanks!!

Yes, they did say that, but they changed their mind late last year.

Following a detailed evaluation against stringent technical and operational criteria, ITU has determined that “LTE-Advanced” and “WirelessMAN-Advanced” should be accorded the official designation of IMT-Advanced. As the most advanced technologies currently defined for global wireless mobile broadband communications, IMT-Advanced is considered as “4G”, although it is recognized that this term, while undefined, may also be applied to the forerunners of these technologies, LTE and WiMax, and to other evolved 3G technologies providing a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now deployed.

Neither "claim" to have it now, AT&T's statement says 6 months and T-mobile has nothing in their plan yet.

All these other things you're saying are firmly in "your mileage may vary", pick the carrier that is best for you. In my area AT&T blows Verizon and Sprint out of the water and will continue to do so while the roll out the backhaul for hspa+

People - quit arguing about the 4G issue. Right now Verizon is rolling theirs out - and until now lagged all others in network speed. So give it up. HSPA+ combined with a dual core processor and a gig of RAM should be faster than just about anyone needs. Considering those specs aren't available on any other network there won't be a real comparison of speeds anyway.

If you want the Atrix like most of us - then get in line and prepared to be amazed by this very cool new phone. If you absolutely hate AT&T and their HSPA+ "4G" network then go somewhere else to b!tch. I am tired of hearing about the mine is 4G and yours isn't argument.

At the end of the day - the network quality and download speeds are different within the same carrier in different places around the country. So - pick the phone you like with the carrier that is best near you and go on your way.

I for one and sick and tired of Verizon's choked 3G network here in San Antonio, TX and am ready for a non binged, non "Droid" Android device. The fact that AT&T got the better of the two Motorola devices is a win for me.

I plan on getting the Atrix on release day. And I can't wait!

This is probably more dependent on the iPhone 4 being able to video chat with a non Apple device. I don't think AT&T cares but Apple certainly does. At least for now.

You can answer calls without undocking the phone.

Tango works for video chatting Android to iOS. Not sure if other 3rd party apps do. And yeah, it's all about apple. Didn't Jobs say he wants to make FaceTime the "standard" for video chatting? Perhaps they should make the app available for other OS'

The more I read about this phone the more pumped up I'm getting! I tried an Android before (Captivate) and ended up selling it and going back to the iPhone 4. I loved the size and look of the Captivate (screen was amazing), but it was just too laggy. I'm ready to try Android again.

I'm glad ATT lets you early upgrade after 6 months. I don't care if I have to pay another $200 on top of the upgrade price. I love getting a new phone. I love them all!

It just so happens my tax refund should be rolling in about Friday (woot! woot!), so I hope this phone truly is schedled for a 2/14 release. I will be ready!

Alright guys, Im creating the list of questions and stashing it in my notebook so I know not to miss anyones questions.

There will be some difficult things to find such as:

Speed tests <- this is the one im dying to try out....if there is a mock gmail account logged in im sooooooo going to sneak a speed test muahaha

Finger print reader <- another feature im dying to try, however im not sure how far my access to the phone will go, and im guess the fingerprint reader is set up like any pascode/pattern on android.

other than that everything else should be easy. I'm taking my Captivate with my to compare screen quality/color as well.

anyways, check back here around 8:00 pm PST (the latest) and ill have the questions answered!

EDIT here are the list of questions I have compiled (they are more like bullet points than questions)

let me know if i miss something
