Root What's Considered the Best Custom ROM for the Droid?

I don't think there is a best per say different strokes for different folks and all. The 3 that most people are using are in no particular order.

1. Bugless Beast or Bugless beauty - made buy pete

2. DroidMod - made by the DroidMod team formerly the Sholes team

3. SmokedGlass - made by adamz

I think a Poll might be in order.:D
would would you say are the fundamental differences with the three, and do any of them mimic the Nexus?

Even then, there is no real objective answer to a subjective question like this - to each their own.

I originally started out with a Sholes build, but didn't want to take all the time to get WiFi working, so I scooted over to Pete's - which I used through 0.7.9. I tried 1.0, then the 2.1/0.3, and it crapped out on my phone - so I switched over to AdamZ's Smoked Glass 4.5.

TBH, I really want a 2.1 ROM b/c of the launcher and some of the new frills - but I also need to have stability - I have quickly made my DROID inseparable from me (and for this being my first smart phone, I am hopelessly hooked now) so stability is the key issue. I like how AdamZ's looks, but it has minor issues, with some things wanting to FC every now and again.

If 2.1 would finally make it to Android I'd probably go stock just for the stability issues, until I could get a rooted ROM.

but that is just me. Some people want flash, some functionality, some a mix of both, and some just want the highest OC they can stand to hold in their hands for 20 mins straight :p

what specific probs do you run into with the smoked glass? Would you consider it a significant upgrade over stock at this point?

I prefer the latest DroidMod rom (1.0). Has the live wallpapers and many of the 2.1 widgets. Basically everything but the launcher, which has been problematic for everyone. I used to prefer Bugless Beast, but I couldn't get droid root helper and metamorph to work on the latest incarnations. The older Sholes mod roms seemed a bit slow, but not anymore.

Specific problems:

  • It includes the Launcher 2, but that is extremely buggy as soon as you start playing with widgets (without widgets, it seems a bit more stable, but only a bit)
  • Doesn't seem to want to play nicely with WaveSecure
  • Has pre-installed Weather and News Widget - I'd like to choose my own
  • Not everything is blue - in call log, the outgoing call is still a green arrow pointing 'northeast'
  • Application android.core (or something like that) as FC'd a few times
  • Home has FC'd a few times (and this is not Launcher 2 home, but the stock 2.0.1 home)

I'll keep looking - I really like the smoked glass look, hoping I can spend some time with MetaMorph soon enough to replace the blue used with a slightly lighter (and better looking) blue that contrasts nicely with darker themes - RGB values of 158:180:255 to be exact.

I tried the DroidMod, but I didn't have the time to get Smoked Glass on here - and it was a bit unstable for me as well.

excluding the beast 0.4 they are all built of of 2.0.1 with cretin 2.1 aspects added in. The best way to answer this is go to alldroid and read each ROM thread. There is also a ton of threads on here about every ROM.

Good point

Look ma, I'm going fast!

*Splat!* said the bug to the windshield

Was that a typo, or do you just not like 2.1. :D

Freudian slip?

The absolutely BEST ROM is the one that is going to be released TOMORROW...:D

As is the best phone, CPU, Video card, HD, case, mouse, KB, car, house, monitor, ....

The grass is always greener ....

I'm new to the Droid Mod scene, about a week, and so far I've really come to like AdamZ's Smoked Glass ROM. I'm currently running 4.5 (testing the CPU speeds 800-1100). Some things that I think helped stability are...I don't use launcher, ditched the idea of live wallpapers, performed a factory reset/cleared cache, then restored my apps after installing the ROM. Before going through this I tried just updating from 4.1 to 4.5 but my CPU temps were high (36-38c doing nothing, 45c watching the Youtube app). My idle temps are 24-28c and load temp got to 44c playing robo defense for 85 levels.
When I ran the Launcher I had FC issues and reboot issues. I've been running on Home for a couple of days and it's been smooth as butter and my battery life has been great. Yesterday I ran 1000/600 on setcpu and was on 20% battery life at 11:00pm last night (I was up at 7:00am to give a better idea).
I had live wallpapers and the 2.1 launcher working, but like I said they could be glitchy. Live Wallpapers just seem slow with Home, so why bother? That's just my experience. I'll test them more as updates come, but for now I'll take the stable road with Home.

Poll would only be fair for those that have tried all 3.

Throughout this weekend, I have installed about four ROMs. As some people have noted, they are all good in their own right. Please note that I might not be as good of a source since I did not keep the ROMs install long enough for me to give a comprehensive overview.

For my taste, I kept Smoked Glass (Adamz). But even with-in this ROM there are different versions that differ. Right now I am running 6.0.1. It is awesome... the installation scrips allows u to customize ur installation to ur hearts desire. I will not list all the features as they are many, just gooogle it.

Even though I am happy with Smoked Glass v6.x, my favorite has been Smoked Glass v4:5. To compensate for things such as overclocking (packaged in v6.x), I purchased "SetCPU for Root Users" This version (v4.5) also comes with Launcher2 which gives a better user experince. So this goes to show that even ROM versions are hard to decide on let alone ROM providers (Smoked Glass vs SholesMod vs UltimateDroid vs etc).

But the answer to the original question is "Best Custom ROM is not yet out!" And will never come out. These guys providing these ROMs are good, their release cycles are amazing. They will continue to innovate and as such, we will always be awed by the ROMs.

BTW, those of you looking for video tutorials on rooting, flashing and custom ROMs go to YouTube and find DroidReview (username) he is awesome. Thanks to this guy I have come to know a lot. He even put together a video for unrooting the phone to stock.

Please excuse grammar issues as I typed this from my Droid.

Enjoy!

Get ROM manager from the market, I think you can download some of those from there. You should also give CyanogenMod a shot.

That's the ROM I'm using right now. It was already rooted when I brought the phone (via Craigslist). It's a good start for an Android beginner I think - I'll be learning how to root the phone down the road once I get a better grasp on all the features CyanogenMod has - it's a gorgeous ROM ftr.
