Root Serendipity 4.3

Noob question. I'd ask over in XDA but I just registered so it will not let me until at least 10 posts.

The 5.0 file has a .rar extension. In other places I've read I always see that it should be .zip instead, does this matter when reflashing? Should I rename (or rezip it) as .zip?

Also, is reflashing it just as simple as 1. booting to recovery 2. selecting it from the SD card? I feel like I want a step-by step here, but I cannot find one, unless it's to flash back to stock/masterclear/ODIN and all that.

(Thanks to all who inputted on my problems above, I'm now just using the Google calendars and all is working lovely. I love this damn ROM, haha.)

I've never seen it download a an .rar file, where did you get it?

Should be, if it's just a reflash but why are you having to reflash?

I love it too, now on 5.0 and it's awesome.

I knew that .rar was odd. Someone mirrored it to their Dropbox so I went for it, I'll just download it properly again.

The reflash is to update to the 5.0? Is that not how one updates Serendipity? Or did you go back to stock and then flashed it?

I agree with Reinbeau, it's a good idea to flash back to stock, master clear and then flash. Some people see it as an extra precaution that you don't *have* to take but the majority of people see it as something you should do as it seems to alleviate some issues. Also, the first question one asks when another has a problem is "did you flash back to stock first?".

Also, were you able to get google talk and the other apps you wanted installed? I know doing it the first time can be tricky, post here if you need some better instructions, it shouldn't take more than a minute to download the correct app, give r/w access via the app, and copy and paste into the correct folder. =-)

I always go to Odin, be sure to take out battery and everything, hold up and down volume and put your battery back in then connect to odin with the phone off. Click the "Start" button then when it boots put it back into debugging mode and do a master clear. Then re-root your phone by just dragging the "root.zip" from one click root and renaming it "update" not "update.zip" your phone already recognizes it at a zip so if you put it as "update.zip" your phone sees it as "update.zip.zip" and your phone wont re-root. Once re-rooted install Rom manager and flashed your clockwork and reboot into clockwork and install your ROM from your sd card, once installed it will go back to clockwork and you just flashed successfully and never use another method than this one. It is the safest method to flashing a ROM according to many devs on the XDA forum. Hope this helped:D

Not necessarily. It is your PC that is hiding the file extention, not the phone... and it depends on how you have your PC configured. Most people I know turn off the hiding of file extensions as it causes much confusion and problems like you describe above. So for them, they would have to make sure to include the ".zip" extension.

Just wanted to clarify for you and readers, since this isn't really correct.

Yeah, I always make sure to do that. Another thing microsoft has done to idiot proof their OS. Don't get me wrong I actually really like windows 7 and applaud microsoft for creating a good OS but the hiding of known file extensions seems rather ridiculous to me.

@Tristessie - I just realized Mikey has made it so the frequently used apps are flashable via CWM so you no longer have to go into your files and manually install them. I just barely updated from 3.5.2 so I hadn't seen all the new stuff he's done in the past 2 weeks.

Can you quickly brief me on how to flash the apps? Or is there a tutorial somewhere?

I tried adding them to system/app before upgrading to 5.1, but I would get stuck in Clockwork Recovery's "installing update". I don't know, I put all .apk in system/apps and the one .so in system/lib. I did figure that it was my messing around, so as soon as I flashed to the original Serendipity_1.5.zip it flashed successfully.

And I really feel like you guys should have little PayPal buttons under your screennames, haha!

The flashable zips are just installed through the Recovery menu when you turn off the phone - instead of turn Off, select Recovery, then go to Install Zip File from SD Card. Navigate to where you've stashed the file (I've actually gotten used to downloading the file with the XDA app and then going into tapatalkdownloads, on the internal SD card, and installing right from there). I admit I've never put one of those zips into the ROM and then flashed, it's easier to do it this way.

Oh, and no Paypal donate buttons for me, but I do like it when people hit the thanks button! :)

IT WAS SO SIMPLE! Lol, I swear it always is. So where I was screwing up was that I was only dropping the .apk file onto my folder. Once I put the entire .zip file and left it untouched, it was a breeze.

Thanks all ;) This is perfect!

hi downloaded this rom last night and i love it! i noticed a few add-ons i dont like the battery meter i want to use on of the add-ons from the website it will not work, i was also going to try fly in animations for the heck of it neither are working. they say its for 5.1 thats what im running Add-ons - Serendipity
You have to install them through Recovery. Download the zip file you want to use, then hit the power button to shut off the phone, but instead, choose Recovery. Then Install Zip File from SD card. Navigate to the zip file, select it, and then follow the screen instructions - it'll flash the zip, then you'll reboot the phone, and have whatever little add-on that you want installed. I have the animated battery and the fly-in animations enabled, as well as the Samsung style MMS program.

Hmm seems what I tried. Does it matter that im in steam not the normal recovery? It tells me its aborted

So I'm all updated to 5.3! Woo :D

Do you guys use home launchers? I use LauncherPro but I would just love to not depend on it. Is there any way to change the dock icons? The amount of screens?

I feel like there would be too many things I'd miss from LP (hold over trash to unistall, increasing rows/colums) but I really want to adapt to the actual Serendipity ROM. It's so much quicker and snappier than LP, I find.

I use LauncherPro to do all that you want to do in Serendipity - I don't understand why you'd want to get rid of it. I have no lag with LP now on Serendipity, are you having problems with it still?

Alright so I'm back to LP. It's not much of lag per se, but I like how the phone reacts better without it. I also prefer how it scrolls inside the app menu. But I'm back on LP, there is really too much I'd miss from there...I wonder why ROM devs don't try to incorporate some of these options that home launchers provide.

I see 5.4 on the website! This guy is quick! I'll try that later tonight :D
