Swype sucks.

Swype isn't totally seamless for me, but I still far prefer it to regular typing. I had a bad habit of trying to swype each word correctly, which causes me to mess up. But the less you think about it, the more accurate it is. At least that's what I've found

My only big annoyance with it is the fact that anytime a word you program into the dictionary and it covers up a pre-programmed word, Swype feels the need to interrupt your swyping to tell you that. It's a totally useless and annoying feature....esp since most of the added words are contact names. The most recent Beta got rid of that feature, but the stock version that was put on the Evo has it. Hopefully it'll disappear when the next update comes around

ETA: Someone mentioned the mic button, that one's annoying too. Sometimes I accidentally hit it when I try to tap the period and it interrupts the feature. I don't care for the feature, so I don't use it. The voice feature should definitely be there bc a lot of people wanted it, I just want an option to get rid of it

I tried Swype for the first couple of weeks that I had my Desire and was just getting used to it when it stopped working. I would slide my finger and nothing at all happened. I switched back to the normal keyboard and uninstalled Swype. Reinstalled and all was well for a couple of days when it happened again. I'd really like to use it so does anyone have any suggestions on getting Swype working please? Am currently using SlideIt which is good but I preferred Swype.

I love swype. Have some funny "swypos" when I'm IM'ing.

When you're first learning to swype, set the speed-accuracy meter towards accuracy. Then as you get better at it, move the meter back towards the middle. This made learning to swype much easier.

Instead of thinking you're typing words, think of it as quickly connecting the dots or drawing a shape that touches all the letters of the word you want, all in a swirly motion. Each word is a beautiful shape. Swyping is very artistic, imho.

I agree with others that if you're not immediately familiar with the layout of a keyboard swype is not for you...

Having said that, I love it. One factor that may influence that is my first exposure to a virtual keyboard was through swype, so I learned it pretty quickly and didn't get used to tapping out words beforehand. I still peck words in every now and then if I know that swype won't recognize it (it's vocabulary is pretty broad though) but for the most part I just let it do it's thing, and it really speeds my typing up...

I am ok using a keyboard but am way short of being able to touch type. That said I installed Swype about 2 weeks ago and an loving it. Within the first day I was able to enter text far faster than by single key selection. Now it is second nature and I can probably enter text on my HTC desire as fast as I can enter it in my PC using a full size keyboard.

I do wonder whether the title of this thread needs amending given that the majority of posters on here would certainly not agree that Swype sucks. It would be a shame if people who could benefit from the tool get put off by the title of a thread.

Some days I hate Swype, other days it awesome. My biggest BIIIGEST gripe is when it searches my facebook and contacts and adds names into the database, it sucks. I don't know how many times i am trying to type something and this random name is popping up instead... How do you reset the database and make it not search to add new names?

Thanks
Tony

I've used Swype for 10 months, tried all the others and just type 2-4X faster with Swype. I am "hunt-and-pecking" on my PC right now (2-3 fingers), and I could have had this typed in half the time on my phone. It's as if Swype knows what you're going to type in advance. I don't concentrate on hitting the correct keys, it's like if I get 3 out of 5 letters close, the correct word comes up. I use it 95% of the time in portrait mode and can't come close to hitting the narrow keys with a normal keyboard, but with Swype you only need to get "near" the right letter... very cool.

Swype is what sold me on this phone and I will not buy another without it.

I have tried other keyboards and hated them. Swype may have it's issues but I never really texted with any other type of keyboard (slide out querty or the numeric one) because just could not get any speed and it took me forever to type out a word.

I do wish there were other features and do not like how it assumes want to text dian't every.single.time I type didn't or changes IT to OUR 9/10 times I will not use anything else. (and yes I did remove dian't from the dictionary but it still does it).

I also wish it would just not automatically replace some words with random 'non-words' and THEN have the tip screen pop up telling you how to remove them. I would rather a pop up screen to ASK if you want to replace the word instead.

I am not big on texting (like some people), but when I do text... swype is the fasted and easiest method I have seen and some of my iFriends and other phone users think it is super cool.

Yes, sweaty fingers are not conducive to proper swyping.

To the OP: you can adjust your sensitivity settings and set how often you want to see the word prediction lists. it takes some playing around but the payoff is worth it for people who have difficulties using a regular keyboard (slide out or on screen....)

But I do find myself trying to swype on my iPad haha...
