Root Serendipity now 5.10

*have updated to 5.10**

Anyone using it? How do you like it? stability compare to others? is there something better? (i know this could be subjective)

its my very first ROM, on my very first android phone. So far its working pretty good for me. I see little bugs here and there, but honestly nothing worse than the phone did on eclair.....probably better over all. Menus over faster, some of my live wallpapers that lagged previously dont any more. Only thing that kind of annoyed me so far was that for almost a whole day, the lights behind the home button wouldnt turn off.....i couldnt figure out if it was supposed to do that or not, but finally today they are not staying lit up when the phone is locked. no idea why it was doing that.

then theres the quadrant stuff, which i know may or may not mean anything at all. but the phone was get about an 850 on eclair, and about a 1550 on the new rom. im assuming thats a pretty good difference. anyone have comparisions of thier benchmarks from rom to rom, or from stock to rom?

The lights staying on is a feature (Back light notification), you can turn off BLN in recovery. It's cleared my clearing the notifications.

I don't care about scores, I just care about performance of the tasks I ask the phone to do, and on Serendipity it runs great.

Works great for me. Had a little glitch after flashing with my calendar but got that fixed. I've used Assonance, Paragon, and Serendipity. They all worked good on my phone but have stayed with Serendipity because Mikey and Chance are always updating and making things better.

ahhha! excellent. thank you sir. glad to know its not a glitch.

maybe i dont need to turn it off......im going to hazard a guess that those little lights use very little power. think i would notice a difference in battery?

It uses very little power, and it's pretty useful. I love it.

I've never tried Serendipity. Been on Stock Cognition for a few updates and just stuck with it. I know some people flash different ROMs all the time but I've just stuck with Cog. Only issue I've had was on 3.01 when the keypad on the phone made horrible noises when pressed. 3.04 hasn't given me a lick of trouble so far.

Not even sure if I'll use Samsungs update when they FINALLY release it. Who wants to reinstall a bunch of bloatware?

There's no reason to. As I've mentioned elsewhere, custom ROMs (at least, Serendipity) have speed, stability, support, and fixes/tweaks within 12 to 24 hours of discovery. You aren't going to get that from Samsung. You aren't going to get anything from Samsung to surpass, or even equal, what some custom ROM devs have baked.

I agree with you whole heartedly on that. Its a shame with millions of Galaxy S devices in the US alone they don't try a little harder to bring the less tech savvy customers up to date. Funny thing is a lot of them don't even know what version of Android they are running. And they may be happy with it.

LOL i didnt know and was happy withit. until i started to do some research. i came over from iphone, jailbreaking/customizing several phones so im comfortable with the idea and knew there would be something for android.

then i read that i didnt have the best version of the software and suddenly i was extrremly unhappy about it, and with my phone.

I just finished flashing it...came over from Cog 3.04. Love it so far, but haven't had too much time yet to play around with it. It seems FAST AND SMOOTH so far!

Ignorance is truly bliss. But anyway, I've been on Mikey's roms since assonance and I love them. If all the accolades people have already said aren't enough then I don't know what is. I myself have not tried any other roms but I have looked into them and read their respective threads on xda. I can say with confidence that Mikey is one of the most present devs on any captivate XDA rom thread. Happy flashing!

ok.

who knows where i have to put my ringtone files in this filesystem to be able to use them? they arent coming up in the ringtone list being in the same location they were before........unless it just dosnt recognize the same .mp4 file type? advise?

I was on the most up to date Cognition last week, then I dropped my phone and it landed in the exact wrong spot on a rock and shattered the screen. I had insurance and Asurion actually sent me out a brand new one. I always had gps issues and the power shut off issues unless I used Captivate Keep Alive. I bought my Captivate on the release date. My new one from Asurion works great, got it yesterday and I flashed to Serendipity 5.5 to see how it compared to Cog.

I'm not going back to Cog at all! Lovin Serendipity. Smooth, longer battery life, I love the black keyboard. There isn't anything I'd change. I guess dropping my phone was a mixed blessing, I'm out $125 when I just got my income tax return anyways, but now my gps works perfect, no random shut downs and found a better rom than Cognition. Even though I loved Cog when I had it.

Since I had to replace my handset, I redownloaded and made new notifications, alarm and ringtones from Ringdroid again. Worked fine, no problem.

I had some little bugs on Serendipity so I'm trying other ROMs until the waters settle...I feel like I'm cheating! Lol.

I will go back I'm sure, I'm too spoiled. I'm on Paragon now and the USB notification falling under the bar annoys me...as does the different color contact tab and little things like that. It's running very nicely though. I'll try FireFly and Andromeda before trying 5.6+.

I switched from cog 3.04 after flashing it about 3 times to get all the bugs worked out. I then switched to serendipity 5.2 and I'm loving the battery life. I was dropping 10% per hour on cog 3.04 and that was just idle with 3 widgets running, no wifi. With 5.2, I'm only looking at a 1.5% drop per hour of standby. However, my GPS still doesnt work. It only works if I use the wifi signal to assist it.

My Cog 3.04 was that too. 10% per hour, I found if I had wifi on, it would slow the battery drain down for some reason. I work in a press warehouse, not the best for signal, so I bet picking up 3g going in and out caused drain. I would have to charge my phone during lunch for it to last the whole day. Even then it was iffy if it would go whole night after my classes in the morning at the college. Now, I can go all day without needing a charge.

I have no complaints with Cog 3.04, but Serendipity looks interesting enough that I may try it out. I like his approach that I don't have to reflash with each update - good approach to just upload the update.zip file each time.

I haven't tried any ROMs other than Serendipity (at version 5.7 as of this writing) and its predecessor Assonance, so I don't have other dev reference points to compare to. I can say, though, that it's got speed, stability, and excellent support within the related XDA thread. Incremental updates are a breeze to apply, and fixes / tweaks occur rapidly.

FWIW, I went on a little flashing spree and went back and forth between Cog 3.04 and Serendipity 5.5 for a few days to try and decide which one I personally liked the most and, most importantly, which one ran better on my phone (speed, battery life, call quality, etc.).

I really like that Cog is designed specifically for the Captivate's hardware and that with it, I could still download and run the free full version of QuickOffice for the Captivate - Market won't let me download it with Serendipity.

I had a lot of problems on Cog 3.04 with FCs on many of my backed up apps and, unfortunately, some FCs on native apps too. Some apps wouldn't even open at all. I tried re-flashing it a few times but it just kept happening and it looked like the only fix was to delete them and reinstall (heaven forbid I lose my Angry Birds progress). I thought maybe my file was corrupt but had no issues at all on Serendipity with any of my apps from the exact same backup file. Also, battery life on Cog was better than stock but still not too impressive. I'm not knocking DG as they, clearly, have built a better mousetrap but I just seem to have more stability and longer battery life on Serendipity.

I'm sure I will try out the next version of Cog when it is released but, for now, I'm sticking like glue to Serendipity. Also, I really like that these guys pump out updates so quickly and frequently.
