Is there an App you love, that we have never heard of?

Mostly people know about the mainstream apps which everyone thinks are "must have" and cool (Soundhound, Shazam, Tasker, Swipe, etc.) This is not a thread about those kind of apps.

This thread is about obscure apps that you found that is very cool or really fills a need, but no one seems to know about it.

So don't post about apps which have a zillion downloads already -- but if you know of a great app that doesn't seem to be known, tell us about it and what it does.

Wow, great idea for a thread. Yes, I will go first.

PREFIXER: when you press SEND this app intercepts and analyzes the telephone number you dialed. When the number matches rules you set up, the app will take certain actions.

For example, one rule I have is "when number dialed is seven digits" -- the app will automatically add the area code for my area. Another rule I have is "when number dialed is my home phone number" -- the app will automatically add *82 to disable my Caller-ID block (also great for other apps which have hard coded numbers)

Many people use it to add calling card info, country codes and the like. I had been looking for an app like this for a long time. This was the first. There are now many imitators, but this is still the best.

I have lots off good apps. Thing is, I've no idea whetehr you already knew about them or not, so I'd better not post. ;-)

Oh, OK then. ExitCarMode deserves recognition. It enables you to exit car mode from within Tasker. Hmm, maybe Tasker should have let you do this natively...

I'll offer a couple of apps that I use.

Ultra Keyboard
First, is an app called Ultra Keyboard. It is similar to Swype but I think is more functional, however it just doesn't seem to get the play that Swype does. This app has an editable user dictionary (an annoyance of Swype), does not automatically store words that are typed from the keyboard (which is another annoyance of Swype), and displays more suggested words than most other "swipe" style typers. That being said, I do use Swype currently since I was invited to be a beta tester, but I still keep Ultra Keyboard available!

CALL CONFIRM
Call Confirm was one of the first apps I installed after coming across it. It does exactly what it says, it confirms that you want to dial the call you are making before sending the call through. Pressing "OK" sends the call, while pressing "Cancel" ends the action and returns to the home screen. This app is a must for typical flat android phones reliant exclusively on the V-keypad. Call Confirm prevents, for example, the accidental calling of numbers that are mapped to widgets.

I did not know about Prefixer. I will try it immediately.

I would like to suggest Gmail Notifier. This little app replaces GMail's notification system, so you get an alarm for each email coming in, even when you already have unread emails in your inbox. Gmail does not do that. You also get the benefit of seeing the sender's name in the notification bar. This is the first app I install in a new Android phone.

EDIT: Ok, I just realized that Froyo's GMail offer to notify for each new email coming in. However GMail Notifier still offer to display the sender's name in the notification bar. However, It may not be relevant to you.

I can second Call Confirm. When I got my Desire a month ago I kept accidentally phoning contacts so installing this has been a great help.

Another happy CallConfirm user here.

G/mol is an obscure app that's really useful in a chemistry or biology lab. Makes it simple to calculate molecular weights of compounds.

EventGhost.

Allows me to control literally any action or sequence on my computer with a shortcut. The perfect remote....love it. I probably have like 20 some EvenGhost shortcuts on various homescreens that do all sorts of stuff on my computer remotely.

callconfirm has another happy user!! discovered it by accident a few weeks ago. definately a must for chronic pocket dialers!!!!

not sure how well known it is, but wallpaper rotator is nice. rotates my wallpaper (from whatever folder i select) ever hour (also customizeable)

Here's one I forgot from my earlier post: "Secret!" from Linkesoft - http://market.android.com/details?id=com.linkesoft.secret

It lets you keep passwords, PINs, bank details, or any other info you don't want others to know, securely on your phone using 128-bit encryption. I'd been using it for years on my old PalmOS devices, and was pleased to find that Android version. I was able to import my PalmOS data seamlessly. An excellent app.

Yikes - that's expensive! I do recognize it from my Palm days, I know it's a good one. I guess you're paying also for the desktop component?

I like Poynt. I found it somewhere and hadn't really played with it, but I have used it a few times over the past few days and it's really useful. I used it this morning to find a feed store, so it isn't just for movies, restaurants and entertainment.

BEDSIDE

It turns off all notifications when you launch the app at bedtime, but allows a whitelist of numbers to call through. Great if you have elderly parents AND friends who drink and dial. hehehe

Backlight off Saves you some battery. Basically it turns off buttons backlight.

Easy answer button. It's a buggy up but it seems to work 90% of the times on my phone.

Sundroid. I'm a cyclist and I'd love to know when the sun will go down.

Prob already heard of this, widgetsoid, make ur own widgets, up to 5 slots, u can make them vertically or horizontally, I toggle 3g n wifi n gps n flashlight n brightness n there is a reboot n shutdown option as well, may require root, or u can set one up n place other apps in it, I have sync settings app, jus a shortcut to background data, to turn on/off background data and auto sync, save battery, 2 apps for root r adjbrightness which lets u lower brightness below what the phone lets u, n button savior, basically a menu bar on the screen that saves u from havin to use ur buttons n wear them out

Others may have figured out how, and may be different on other phones, but on my Fascinate, couldn't sync up my email groups with the ones I had made in my gmail account. Groupy free lets you email and text to user groups you have created in your online gmail.

Great thread! I would like to introduce Unified Remote. It's a small app that comes with a Windows "server". It allows you to control your PC over WiFi. The setup is a breeze and it works great. I use it mainly to control Windows Media Player from my HTC Wildfire. You can also use your phone as a WiFi mouse-touchpad thing, and lots more. Version 2 (beta is available now) will also support Bluetooth. The developers are very open to suggestions.
