The following is an online chat I had with an AT&T customer service rep today. I asked when Froyo would be available for my Captivate:

Sharon Taylor: There is a tentative date of 2-21-11 for the upgrade on the Android 2.2 firmware.
Wes smith: Will this be OTA or thru Kies Mini?
Sharon Taylor: It will be sent through an OTA push to your phone.
Sharon Taylor: Was there anything else I can assist you with?
Wes smith: No, thank you very much

Not sure if this is believable, but it sounds promising.

Yep galaxySsupport still would not confirm the froyo date on twitter. Glad to hear at&t did though, even though it's still "tentative"..

Just chatted with AT&T Tech support and even mentioned the "tentative date". They denied any actual date and referred me to Samsung's US Captivate Download page.

This is pointless. F*U Samsung & ATT.

So I tried to put in a complaint, one there is no AT&T for carrier. There is also no sh-i897 for model. Guess they were tired of hearing all the bitching!

lol you guys actually believed there was an update coming? Give me a break. Saw this post on Engadget, rolled my eyes, then figured I'd come back here and watch the fish take the bait.

Even if there is an update, it's now been 7 months since the update was supposed to be available. It's pretty sad to know Samsung's phone department is laughing hysterically at how they fooled all those Galaxy S customers.

This part is better (sounds like they got the message):

I've heard that they ramped up their Android software development center in India big time. Too bad not in the US, but hopefully this ramp will allow them to ship software upgrades in a more timely manner.

Really only one behind as the only phone using 2.3 is the NS, and I read that it is very buggy. Phandroid speculated a few days ago that may be the reason why until now, the NS is still the only device with 2.3.

Tip for members planning to upgrade to Froyo:

Don't. At least not immediately. You've waited this long (many since the phone's launch in mid-July) that one or two more days shouldn't matter. As tempting as it will be, I recommend that you wait for early adopters to report back on their experiences. Did it go smoothly? Were there gotchas that they were able to work around? Are there any significant issues that will, in a worst case scenario, cause the upgrade to be pulled for debugging?

That's what I would do if I weren't using a custom ROM, and suggest that you do the same. It's a no-lose proposition.

That did happen though, the international version was released then. That article just didn't apply to the US phones. Do you see Samsung USA or the Captivate mentioned anywhere in that article?

I tend to think it was more AT&T than Samsung, but that's my opinion. Either way, I am more happy to be rooted and flashed, with no AT&T BS on my phone. Plus I tend to think of these as mini-laptops or PC's and who hasn't toen those down to tinker with and make the way theu want it?
