Droid 2 R2D2

Does anyone have some good input on this phone?

It's $50 cheaper than the droid 2 and I'm due for an upgrade. I still can't find the difference between this and the regular droid 2.

The only reason I'm wanting the droid 2 over the droid x is the physical keyboard. I have the droid eris and the keyboard doesn't flip sideways fast enough and is too compact to hold vert.

The only difference is the look, and some custom wallpapers/sounds/media. Oh, and it makes an R2D2 sound on powerup that you can't remove or turn off unless you root, which bugs some people.

You should probably wait at this point...unless you are like me and really need the physical keyboard. The Thunderbolt is coming out in a few days and looks to be a pretty awesome phone.

I like my R2D2D2. Make sure to check the Droid X to see if you can tolerate the way that the keyboard switches to landscape. Your phone might just be too slow. The main reason I use a physical keyboard is: I am so destructive with my software that I sometimes cause my phone to get into a force close loop at startup. The only way to avoid a trip to the VZW store when it does that is with a physical keyboard.

The Eris is just terrible and the Incredible is awful, too.

I'd get this phone again given the choices you have (mainly because I don't like having a large screen next to my face when I am using it as a phone.) There isn't a phone I would rather have right now.

Im sure if you were stuck in a loop there's a way to stop it with out a keyboard. Im confused how you caused that loop tho...rooting?
What do you mean you are destructive with your software? Like you mess with settings and ruin things? Is your software abuse the only reason you chose the r2d2?

Also I rarely talk on the phone at all so I'm not worried about a big screen next to my face. However, I'm wondering if the phone will still be small enough to tuck into my bra while im working at the salon

As for the physical keyboard, i think the screen will be big enough to use swype in portrait mode.

and yes the eris is a terrible phone. It was a really nice starter-smart-phone. But now that Im aware of android capabilities...I feel the eris is holding me back.

I didn't get the R2D2 because I am always messing around with things, I got it because it's cute. *ducks* ...and that it has a physical keyboard. I never thought about putting my phone there (in the bra strap.) Maybe if I were better endowed. :eek:

The Droid X is certainly light enough for that.

get R2D2 I went with one and really like it as a phone, came from an LG (never again). really like the keyboard, like the Star Wars stuff too (yes I'mma nerd). Very solid phone though.

Great phone. And I believe it is running on a higher version of Froyo than the standard D2.

Dont beleive it is. Ill have to look into that. Its also not running the 1.2ghz processor either.

I was in the same boat as the OP. I started with an Eris about a year ago, and finally decided to get a new phone. For me, I was deciding mostly between the D2 and DX. I wanted to experience something other than HTC for a while.

The DX was very tempting, but in the end the size is what killed it for me. I can't see having a phone that big. One of the reasons I loved my Eris was its size. The D2 is barely wider than the Eris, and just slightly taller. Plus, I wanted to try a phone out with a physical keyboard. So far I use the onscreen and physical about 50/50.

I don't regret one bit going with the D2. From the Eris, it's absolutely amazing! Love this phone, especially rooted and running the Liberty 1.5 ROM.

r2d2 = 2.4.5

That isn't the version of the kernel, just the Motorola/VZW version because if you look at the kernel version, you're still on 2.2.

the 2.4.x is to differentiate from non-R2 units.

I would think that the R2D2 has the potential to actually become a collector iteem in a few years with it's unique licensing

that just means that 2.4.5 is r2d2 edition and the droid 2 is 2.3.2
my droid 2 global is on 2.4.3 its all about the phone mine has sim card attributes in it, r2d2 is for the r2 theme and 2.3.2 is just regular

Purchased the R2D2 yesterday should be getting it soon. The reason i chose the R2D2 over the DX was the size. My girl has the DX its cool but its not pocketable for me, its fine for her cause she just sticks it in her purse. Im coming from a palm pre plus so the size difference will be huge even with the R2D2.
