Root [ROM] ApeX V1.4.1 for Droid X & Droid 2 - Refinement and Ease of Use (2/22/2011)

Nice, now the Market does't even detect Gmail on my phone. It shows that there's an update, but when I try to even check up on the app, it says "The requested item could not be found."

Yes I have wiped Gmail's cache and even force closed it/restarted it a few times in the last few minutes, nothing helps.

My obvious recommendation is don't try to do this update. I can't find a way to fix my Market now.

EDIT: This is his Twitter status on how to install it; I am nowhere near getting that experience pass the "press i" part.

Try deleting it with root explorer and then try to install it again.

I dont have RE installed right now, but I did manage to mess up Gmail further. I found out I could reinstall the Gmail update on the market if I longpress it. But now I get a server error when trying to uninstall it, and it's still not recognized by the Market when I simply press it. :(

Guess I'll be re-installing ApeX tonight...

huh?!

Those were the exact steps I did when testing this.

By the way, did you turn your phone off of USB mass storage mode before starting the toolbox? If the sdcard is mounted to your PC still, the phone cannot see any files on it.

So just to be sure:

1. Gmail.apk is on the ROOT of your sdcard
2. Your phone is NOT in mass storage mode
3. You run toolbox, option 2, then i, then type Gmail.apk

and it still doesn't work?

Hey Fab,

I uninstalled the Gmail update first, then put the Gmail.apk in the root (as in, if you just dragged and dropped the file right onto the SD card). My phone is not plugged into a computer, and I never had a problem with the toolbox before.

If I press i and hit enter, the screen flashes and it's like I never pressed the 'i' in the first place. And now with Gmail messed up in the Market, I guess it's just easier now to just wipe the phone and install ApeX again.

Actually same thing happened to me. It seemed like whenever I hit 'i', the toolbox thought I hit something that wasn't an option. I tried 'r' just to make sure my keyboard wasn't screwing up and that worked fine. To get the updated Gmail.apk working, I just put it in /system/app, changed the permissions using RE and rebooted and its all updated again now with the gingerbread notification.

Ahh, sorry to hear about this. I'm at a loss, I can't really reproduce the error and looking through the script, I don't see how that could happen

But I'm glad you got it working with RE! There's also a manual way to do it:

Code:
su
sys -rw
cp -f /sdcard/Gmail.apk /system/app/
chmod 755 /system/app/Gmail.apk
sys -ro

He doesn't have root explorer....I was going to direct him in that same direction, but if he doesn't have it, he can't do it.

I ended up using RE and did the same as Peg49. In toolbox, I could get the "i" to work but when attempting to install Gmail.apk, there was a quick flash and nothing happened. Tried applying the gmail update and then uninstalling it. Still nothing. I could not get your apk to take until I matched the correct permissions in the system/app location. Could it be a problem with permissions set in your file Fab?

Are you using swype? Try changing the keyboard to the stock multi touch android keyboard.... see if the allows for the install option. This is what worked for me.

Bam, that worked, thanks!

Unfortunately, Gmail is still corrupted/gone in the judgment of the Market (even though it lets me open it if I choose so via a long press), so I'll still be wiping my phone.

EDIT:
I still wouldn't recommend the fix, because the update that it's based on was pulled anyway due to stability issues. Best to just stay with the version that ApeX 1.4.0/1.4.1 came with and wait for a new official Gmail update.
